    A 60 Second Review

Love and Rockets - Lift (1998)

    Choice Cuts
    R.I.P. 20 C.
    Resurrection Hex
    My Drug

    Review:

First off, this isn't a post-punk album by any stretch of the imagination. What you have is a mixture of progressive electronics (not unlike Underworld), sprawling eastern-flavoured psychedelia (the kind Amorphous Angrogynous excel at), trip-hop, Primal Scream style electo and even the odd crazy ballad. So yes, everything including the kitchen sink then.

The problem is, this album tries to be several things at once and ends up as a complete mess. Having said that, the tracks that do work, work really well. It's certainly worth a few listens.

    Genre: You name it..
    Label: Red Ant Entertainment

    60 Second Rating: 8/10

My acid house pick of the week:

    Accelerator (1991)

Acid house was one of my favourite genres, it's a shame it evolved into other things so quickly! These people were right at the front, pushing the envelope until it took flight. This album isn't my favourite of the genre (that place is reserved for 808 State), but tracks like "Papua New Guinea" are right up there with "Pacific 202".

As for their influences, check "El Salvador" by Cybrotron.

    Choice Cuts:
    Papua New Guinea
    Expander
    Pulse State

Try 16B - Sounds From Another Room, also from 1998.

I have "Since Then" by Ian Pooley and it's good stuff.

    thanks will check them out.

    to pooley:
didnt like his stuff that much after he began producing latinhouse. its sounds too cheesy. the newest album 'souvenirs' is only a disaster. it was so bad i couldnt listen to it. its almost hard to imagine that these to albums (meridian and souvenirs) are made by the same person!

    My pick of the week:

    Outpost Transmission (2003)

After Don Solaris, many people will have written 808 State off. But what happens? They crawl out of the bargain bucket and kick it down the road. This album has 5 absolute stunners.

    Choice Cuts:
    Bent
    Yoyo
    Wheatstraw
