  • The Power Pop Desk:

I didn't see one here yet, so I thought I'd make one. Though I'd need some help since I'm still finding lots of new stuff =/.

Heres a free blog site where many classic vinyl power pop records have been uploaded, updated almost daily, though some of the older uploads maybe down(great if you love the classics and lots of obscure ones as well as some more knownish guys as well, its where I got 2 records of Shoes): Powerpop Bloggers

My power pop record of the week:

Mega City Four - Sebastopol Road (1992)

    Picks
    Ticket Collector
    Sacred of Cats
    Anne Bancroft

MC4 have become far too obscure for my likings. :(

  • I'll start off with a forgotten American Power Pop classic to go with Cylob's Brit great.

    In The Presence Of Greatness

  • oh yeah....although its not really usually seen as such, and before I forget, can I just say that one of the best Power Pop albums for me of all time has to be Bandwagonesque

Mindless Robotic Staff, , "if we don't have it, you don't need it!"
  • and in case that isn't enough....I just remembered one of the lesser known lights of Power Pop - the mighty Australian rockers The Hoodoo Gurus

Try Mars Needs Guitars but you'd be best trying to search out one of their compilations such as the two-disc Ampology

phew...i think I've done enough power pop for the day....

My power-pop pick of the week:

    Choice Cuts
    Shorty
    Hit
    You And Me Song

I'd say "Bagsy Me" was their pinnacle, but "Yeah" (1999) is also studded with power-pop ballads. It's less consistent, but then it has 14 tracks.

I haven't listened to "Aquanautic" (1992) and "Be A Girl" (1994), if you happen to stumble on them, give us your feedback!

Secret Snacker & Accomplished Pen Thief At:
  • I've got Be A Girl and it's definately up there with Bagsy Me, as their two best albums.

    That does it.

Be A Girl gets some airtime tonight. :)

Secret Snacker & Accomplished Pen Thief At:
  • I've got both Be A Girl and Bagsy Me, and I don't see You and Me Song on Bagsy Me. its on Be a Girl for mine!

But that's just being pedantic...I actually prefer Be A Girl to Bagsy because its got some really killer tunes.

    Choice Cuts:

    Might Be Stars
    New World Record
    Dreamy Wednesdays
[and of course] You and Me Song

Speaking of fine Power Pop that's quite forgotten, anyone else fancy obscure Swedish This Perfect Day?

For all fans who enjoy The Wannadies, try to find this album.

    Choice Cuts:

    Revolution
    In My Bed
    Stormy Weather

I like Swedish and I like power pop, so the chances are I'll like those guys.

"You and Me Song" was included on the British release of "Bagsy Me", I guess to increase publicity and sales. The album doesn't need it mind! For me, the prize track is "Hit", a case of guitars at 20 paces.

Just listening to "Be A Girl" for the first time, making me a lucky man indeed!

This band became obscure overnight, which is a shame considering the quality of their songwriting (music and lyrics).

The Family Cat - Magic Happens (1994)

    Choice Cuts
    Airplane Gardens
    Gone, So Long
    Hamlet For Now

    Scroll up a bit.

Get either of these albums. :)

Secret Snacker & Accomplished Pen Thief At:
  • I too have 'Be a Girl' (sadly only thing I have of wannadies)...it's truly awesome and addictive.

  • Hmm, this album was recommended to me a lil while back, and I enjoyed it:

    Godspeed the Shazam

    Recommended:
    Gonna Miss Yer Train
    Super Tuesday
    Sunshine Tonight

  • What the heck, heres a some more; Though most people probably know of the Nerves, there seems to be less than 2,000 listeners T_T;

    The Nerves
    The Nerves [EP]

    Recommend:
It's a 4 song set...all of them (unless you have B-Sides as well)

    Good to know:
-One of the songs is 'Hanging on a telephone' (made popular by Blondie, imo they do better but I'm biased)
-Member Peter Case is/was also leader of The Plimsouls

  • Ooh yes, The Wannadies was a very good band and Be A Girl is my favorite album of theirs! And This Perfect Day, I thought I was the only one who remembers them.

I'd also like to recommend Nyack:

Brings back a lot of memories...

    Elevator Attendant at

There ought to be a law against you.
  • Hmm, I can't seem to find anything on the Nyack T_T

  • Fountains of Wayne - Utopia Parkway
Superdrag - In The Valley of Dying Stars
The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow

I've been addicted to this compilation lately:

    The Very Best of Badfinger

Badfinger are fantastic. They never really made it, sadly, because of poor management and bad luck, but they still rank as one of the best power pop bands ever...I think they're just as good as Big Star. I first discovered them when I fell in love with "Baby Blue" after hearing it on the local classic rock radio station, and then I heard some of their other songs and it turns out I did know some of them, I just never knew it was them! This compilation is chock-full of gems.

    Key tracks:
    Baby Blue
    No Matter What
    Rock Of All Ages
