Your first encounter with Manic Street Preachers was?

"Generation Terrorists" (1992)

Winter, 1992. The Manics had just seized the cover of NME and they looked so utterly different from the usual Madchester, Shoegaze, Grunge and Indie Rock outfits. I think I (as many) bought the album out of curiosity. Were these people for real, or was it another marketing gimmick in the vein of Sigue Sigue Sputnik?

Having got the album it was a case of instant satisfaction. This band could write and play music, the return of rock and roll (guitars at 50 paces and all that). Not only that, their politicised lyrics were paletable and struck a chord or two.

As for the songs, I could pick out many a favourite. What sticks out is "Condemned to Rock 'N' Roll", an absolute epic of sprawling guitars that could blast a battleship out of the water. Placed neatly at the close of the album, and leading out with the lyrics... "there's nothing I wanna be, there's nowhere I wanna go". Indifference with fury, like cutting yourself and not realising.

The above. The truth is, I've never been a fan of the band's later work. Although most of their albums are highly acclaimed (and probably rightly so), they all seem to lack the pure punch of the debut.

Which album would you recommend as a starting point (and why)?
