  • Not really much into tracking subgenres (no really, all my mp3s are just tagged metal) but I will try to answer the question.

Black: Probably the only black I listen to would be early Amorphis (which is epic, btw) although its likely I have others I like, I just don't know :D. Never got into the whole "satan" thing (not that I am christian or anything, just always thought it was silly). Maybe Mortification (I think that would also count as Death), which is weirdly addictive. Something about the idea of "White Metal" just makes me keep coming back and listening to these guys. Either way, I find most metal of this genre just unintentionally silly (although I may not be basing my idea of what makes up this genre on the best of info).

Death: Again, not huge into the subject matter, but I do love early Sepultura, At The Gates, Naglfar. Again, probably others. I think early In Flames, Dark Tranquility and Soilwork go here as well, although I'm not sure :D

Power: Iced Earth, Hammerfall, Blind Guardian, Falconer, Demons and Wizards, Firewind, Savatage. I love the power metal music, but the vocalists are not my cup of tea usually.

Symphonic: Nightwish, Epica, After Forever, ReVamp, Dark Moor (although the vocalist can be a bit much) Battlelore, Therion, Xandria.

Folk/Viking/Oriental: I lump these all together, because I figure they are ultimately just traditional/metal fusions. Amon Amarth (love the Wagner-esque opera sound they get), Týr, Eluveitie (prob my fav band at the moment), Arkan, Myrath, Korpiklaani, Cruachan, Aeternam, Orphaned Land, Elvenking, Ensifernum, Moonsorrow, Thryfing, Tursias, Waylander. Kartikeya may also count as Death.. :D

Prog Metal/Djent: Lumping these together because most of my prog faves are Djent. TRAM, Animals as Leaders, Sithu Aye, Intervals, Periphery (although I HATE the vocalist), Tesseract

Doom: I think The Sword goes here, which is another of my faves all time. Love that classic Sabbath sound with a harder modern edge. Monster Magnet?

NWOBHM: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Mercyful Fate, Motorhead

Thrash: Megadeth, Slayer, Metallica (although only the first 4 albums) Testament, Anthrax (again, just the first couple of albums), Heathen, Havok, Artillery

NuMetal: Disturbed pretty much is it. Oh, and Sevendust. Oh, and System of a Down

    Metalcore: Shadows Fall

New Wave of American Heavy Metal (which is a laughable name, but I have no idea what else to call this): Five Finger Death Punch, Black Label Society, Fear Factory, Mastodon, Nevermore

Industrial: does KMFDM count? I dunno. Maybe Rammstein if they count. No idea :D

    Goth(?): Lacuna Coil, Moonspell

And, no idea where these guys go, but my last favorites, so I gotta put'em somewhere: Alestorm (almost included with folk, but wasn't sure) and Children of Bodom (I think Death, but I honestly have no fucking clue, other than AWESOME :D)

Also, the Haunted.... no idea where they go either.
