I'm setting up a site on bandcamp.com for just the Odious album. Right now there's only the first song, and it's a 'name your own price' setup with a reasonable minimum of 99 center per track. They offer lossless versions, like FLAC, OGG, etc. So I'm actually uploading the uncompressed .WAV files, which can take a long time at 80-100 MB per file from a residential location. My music will still be free here on last.fm, but for those that want to throw me some coin or want to buy higher quality sounds files, http://marcapullen.bandcamp.com/ will be the way to do it. I'll see how it goes with just Odious before I start uploading everything I have.

Good news, I've finished recording the bass for the final two songs, and I've done a quick cleanup of noise and leading silence on all 8 songs for all tracks. I'll record them and burn them to a CD Sunday night most likely, so I can do my usual test runs of the first final mix down on various CD players. I usually try it out on a 5.1 surround sound DVD player, my 5.1 surround sound PC speakers, a crappy kitchen under the counter CD player, a boom box, and my car stereo, and tweak the volumes as needed, re-burn to another CD, etc. I'm very interested in how the new 5 string bass sounds on the other CD players. But I should have this new album polished and released on Monday. Oh, I also have to set the song order and name the tracks. I have a good album title already tho. So yay. :)

I'm down to two songs left to record the bass for. I saved the two worst for last (hard to play). I probably should have done these two first. heh

New 5 string bass is working out ok. I've recorded bass for two songs so far, then found that the tension rod was too tight for this low tuning, which ruins the sustain and makes the string clanky. So I fixed that and just finished re-recording the bass for the two songs tonight. Sounding pretty good so far!

Bah, I ordered a 5 string bass from Musicians Friend. Should arrive next week. Ibanez GSR205 (very cheap 5 string). It's basically the same as my Ibanez 4 string bass.

Got a problem. I started working on the bass tracks, and my poor 4 string bass just can't go that low to match the tuning of my 7 string guitar. I think I might just make this album bass-free. I'm not up for buying a 5 or 6 string bass just for this, not now at least.

I'm done recording the rhythm and lead tracks and the basic drums for all 8 tracks. Hard part is done! Next up is spicing up the drum tracks, tweaking the volume mix for the guitar tracks, and recording the bass.

Of the 8 songs for the new album, 3 are pretty much done, one more is about 7 minutes long, needs another 3 minutes to fill out. The other 3 are about 2-4 minutes of solid intro ideas. I always record the bass guitar last, then fine tune the drum kit for fills and cymbals. This is taking forever, but I love what I have so far. One thing I noticed, since I'm not using traditional song layouts (intro-a-b-chorus-a-b-chorus-outro), I tend to get lost about half way through if I'm casually listening. Like "I" by Meshuggah, I have to really concentrate to remember all the parts. This can be good and bad. Good in that it makes listening over and over more enjoyable for some people, bad because it makes my songs less memorable. Interesting nonetheless. At this rate, I'm hoping to get it released by the end of this year. I've been spending about 2-4 hours a night during the week, and 4-10 hours on the weekends for a while.

I'm making great progress with the new album. All of the songs will be a non-repeating section type of song, so it's taking a long time to get everything recorded and unique between songs and maintaining a good flow. I have a few minor themes between a few songs, but they should be subtle and not sound like repeats or rip offs of each other. I'm also doing some more complex rhythms and lead melodies. Some sections I have to re-record for an hour or two to get it perfect, and usually for a mere 30-60 second riff. It's complex for me at least. Bulb or Meshuggah wouldn't have a problem playing my new stuff (I think). :)
