I can't see the search function here, so:
On the Beta site I try and tag something, and instead of letting me tag as I wish, i.e.
    dance, electronic

as I type these, it inputs "chillout dance" and "progressive electronica" instead.

Get rid of these horrible auto tags please.

They're just suggestions, you don't need to use them, press the up arrow to unselect the suggestion and carry on.

They're horrible and incredibly annoying. Please don't make them automatic, you could select them manually from the list of suggestions it brings up instead.

I prefer the actual tag "cloud" in the artist's profile, instead of the tag list they put.

    Here's the official explanation:

The drop down list of suggestions is populated by tags that you have used in the past. When you start typing, it searches through that list and suggests any tags that match part of your text.

You can then press return, tab, comma or click on the suggestion to accept it, or hit up first if it's a new tag.

You can also use the arrow keys to navigate the suggestion list, so pressing up is taking you out of the list selection to allow you to submit your new tag.

Of course if there aren't any matches, you don't need to do this, you can just press comma or tab to create the tag. Also in this case, pressing return will submit your tag selections.

They're auto selected to emulate how most autocomplete features work. Try email address completion when composing a new message in Mail on OS X, which differs slightly in that it shows you the first suggestion inline and you cancel it by pressing delete to clear the selected completion.

So it's a trade off, auto selecting works better if you reuse your tags a lot, but I can see it's an annoyance if you're creating new ones all the time. It sounds like a good change would be to not use comma for autocompleting suggestions.

So the proposed new behaviour would be something like this.

If there are matches for what you typed, show the list and use the arrow keys to navigate the suggestions, then press return or tab or click to select it. Pressing comma will not choose the suggestion, but create the new tag you just typed. If there are no matches, comma or tab will create the new tag, and return will save your tags.

    How does that sound?

Oh also, you can press the "esc" key to hide the autocomplete entirely.

That makes sense. Having 'enter' select the auto-suggestion would be fine, imo, it makes sense that hitting enter should select whatever's highlighted and plenty of other things do it that way.

Commas definitely shouldn't select though - it tells you to "Type tag names above, separated by commas.", so having it select a different tag than the one you typed once you hit a comma to move onto your next tag is counter-intuitive. I'd rather just type my tags, then use a comma to separate them - I can select one of the suggestions if I want to, but I don't want it to be 'opt-out' like in the current system

Ok, this sounds good to me :)

I re-use my tags all the time, but the automatic selecting never selects the ones I want. In fact, it goes for the least used tags of all.

The "new behaviour" sounds much better, by the way.

The automatic selection doesn't try to be clever in choosing the tags, at the moment it literally matches whichever one it finds first.

I'll see about ordering by usage, that makes sense.

Thanks for the work on auto-complete, but what about tag clouds? I would like to see them ordered by tag-playcount rather than the number of times tag was used, as suggestet here.

    Totally agreed.

We've just pushed out some changes that sort the suggestion list by how often you use them, so your most commonly used tags will be at the top of the list.

Also, comma will now no longer auto complete suggestions.

Sorry this took a while to fix, let me know if you have any other concerns about the tagging interface.

    Thank you. :)

I just posted this in another thread, hope you don't mind the duplication:

Just a question - how do you tag a track when you're on the page? This one for instance: http://www.last.fm/music/Lisa+Knapp/_/Beggar+beggar . I was about to tag it 'streamable track wants' so I know if it's ever uploaded. I used to be able to tag from the track page itself. I know I can backpage to where I found it, but just wondering, in case I missed something. Thanks.

EDIT: nvm, I figured it out. Add To Library - small blue text "add tags" - add your tags - OK x2

Function seems to be back now! You have to click on "Add to my library" and then on "Add tags"!

P.S.: Tagging is now more hidden for new users than it was before!?

Thanks, akrde, I figured it out at the time - see my edit.

I'll give tagging a try this evening, see if anything's changed. :)

... I can't seem to tag from my Recently Listened. I know I could before.

... from albums - Add To Library, then add tags is going to get complaints. Why not separate the two? Just add another option to Tag in the drop down menu.

I'm guessing but I suspect the idea behind this is to make it clear that tagging something does add it to your library, if something is already in there you just have a tag button in its place

I'm guessing the same, but it isn't thought-through. It's one thing to just chuck a track into our Libraries somewhere, it's another to tag it so our Libraries are better organised and so we have a higher likelihood of hearing said track again. Non-subs would add to Library. Subs would tag.

I'd chuck artists into my Library no problem. Except it's kind of hard to do if you listen to even just one track, to see what they're like. Once you've done that, the artist is already in your Library with 1 play, and then it's too late to add the artist and all their works.

Still, all in all, it's a great start. I'm offering ideas for the future, for further improvement. :)

Yes, this "bug" was reported many times before and hopefully they will change it soon!!!
