last.fm should NOT become a facebook for music fanatists

  • last.fm should NOT become a facebook for music fanatists

I, personally, was pretty disgusted by my first view from the last.fm beta page. By browsing through I found out that there are of course pretty much cool features like that new library but in my opinion the page is overloaded with useless informations. Why for example should I be interested in where my friends/neighbours posted their last shouts?! The activity feed in general is a (poor) copy from the one facebook has.

On the current version of last.fm I like pretty much that you've got pretty much informations on one screen, now - also because of pretty much useless things - it's easy to lose the overview.

And why the fuck did you remove the charts from the profile page?! In my opinion this is what last.fm it's all about!

    Indeed.

I'm already looking forward to when Facebook is passé.

Charts are still on the Profile page, though.

  • i like it

  • I tend to agree. Personally i don't see what was wrong with the old design, granted there are some neat new features here now but it's trying too hard to be something it's not.
It seems to me it's like when you go shopping, see a packet of biscuits you like and it's got a bit "New and improved flavour!" on the front, so you try them, and they taste like crap.

  • I wouldn't mind this new design, if weekly charts returned to profile page. They definitely need to come back.

On your profile page under 'Top Artists' try the 'Last 7 days' tab.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit scrobbling.

But that's a "rolling chart". I think he probably means the weekly snapshots, i.e. like it displays on the current live site. These are still present in the beta, but not on the profile itself.

I think the Last.fm guys underestimated quite how much attachment people have to these old-style charts (and now that the beta is open to non-subscribers, I think this argument is going to keep coming up again). I'd like to see a new tab on the profile charts, something like "Last week's snapshot"; this would make everyone happy.

  • Please stop turning this into another Facebook clone.

I don't want a Blog either, that is why I don't have a Facebook or a MySpace. I am interested in the Music, not the Words of the Blogger.

  • I too wish for longer charts but you're nuts if you prefer that web 2.0 glass nonsense to the beta site.

  • Hmmmmm.....I thought Facebook WAS passé.

It is very passé, people just haven't caught on yet!

    Im on the internet!
  • I think its ok, I like what's new, but its too facebook like, and someday facebook will get old

  • I do agree that Last.fm's charm comes largely from its lack of any deep social network integration. There are friends, which makes absolute sense here in the interest of sharing, and you can leave a little note on someone's profile. In my opinion that's all we should have, but ofcourse this topic would've been more productive if he original poster had spoken as a beta-tester, not someone whose feelings were just hurt and needs to vent.
I also really miss the traditional last.fm colour, but I suppose themes are coming, and if not there's always the Stylish extension

  • It's ok but I really dont like how the shoutbox is now more like half the page than just a small box ;) Having the shoutbox at the bottom and not just at the side like before is definetly the worst change along with that activity thing which I don't really care about.

I also think the old page was a lot tidier and less messy. I also much prefer the display picture and info about the profile off to the side inside of directly in the middle. As for me viewing my profile I don't care about that stuff cause I already know it ;) so its better to have your recently played right at the top in the middle than a picture of me telling me where I live and what age I am.

The new library feature is cool though.

Weekly charts need to return aswell.

I must agree with schrotthaufen and Megasaxon.

Last.fm beta page is too messy and have useless stuff like Active Feed or the number of shouts. Also I think that the shoutbox is too big because now the page looks more like a big chat room than a music profile.

The Library is ok but imo it would look better if the pictures would be smaller.

The main pluses of last.fm beta is that now I can change the number of top artist and jump quickly to top artist from last 3 months, last 6 months ect.
But please bring back the weekly charts.

The last.fm crew are experimenting too much with the stiles. The old stile is just good and if it's good why change it?

I have to admit that i am not really into all that technical stuff, everything worked fine for me as far as I found out.
And it is really something about hurt feelings. The last.fm page is about to change from a music network into a social network and this is NOT the reason why I am registered here.

    Good point

  • Just a quick note from quick observation. The shoutbox itself is half-page long. The only good thing about it is its placement below every other important feature.

My first impression is it does look like facebook (and I don't even have a facebook account). Simple header bar, left minimalist menu, and activity feed (what the hell?). I want my chart back. Not the top 10 one, the 50 one.

Plus, is that an iTunes clone hanging on my top right hand side?

Music network to social network? Hardly. Can't see if we've got any new messages. Shoutboxes booted to the bottom of the page, out of the way. Apparently, we're music, not people therefore Playlists are staying top right and our About Me is booted out of sight, below the fold. Activity Feed is also out of sight, not that it's at all useful. No socialising here, lol.

All in all, the beta is just an exercise in bad design. Some designer somewhere wants to come back in the future and clear up the mess they're making. Nice money if you can get it. The live site is great and useful. Can't have that, can we?

    The Shoutbox

I preferred it better when it was up top, although it doesn't have to be as small as it used to be. I don't like the way it is now, it is just going to make posting in random people's boxes more awkward and formal.

And then you have to hope they notice you left them a message.

I do like that all the history pages are available to us, although I've been here over a couple of years, been active, and now am looking at coming up for 3,000 shouts. Thank goodness I deleted some as I went. :S

How ironic that just yesterday I was thinking about how awesome it is that Last.fm didn't try to do everything at once, i.e become a social networking site. Then today I receive an email with a link to my beta Last.fm page.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the new font/panel/chart style (although truthfully I still prefer 2005's, when it was still called audioscrobbler)., but I can't stand the layout change. The site is too much like MySpace/Facebook now, with much less emphasis on the charts. The activity feed and shoutbox take up far too much space, IMO.

Look more. you can change your charts to top 50.

I quite like them just the way they are though I do wish that section on the profile page showed more than 8 artists. Still, a text only option for those who want it would probably be welcome.
