Taste-o-meter and Neighbours

  • Taste-o-meter and Neighbours

My neighbours have a Tast-o-meter rating of high, but there are people with super Taste-o-meter ratings. Why aren't they my Neighbours?

because they are 2 different algorithms, one is done on the fly and is very fast at doing it... the other does a whole bunch of other stuff with your whole historical weekly charts etc. We can not generate the neighbours calculation on the fly like the taste-o-matic does currently.

I like the concept of the compatabilty meter, but it seems to need some tweaking. It doesn't make sense to match as "Super" with a person that has 140 bands in common with you but only match as "Very High" with someone that has 362 bands in common with you.

Seven Deadly Sins? I thought it was a to-do list!

yeah it does need some tweaking.. i match to russ as "super" which is rubbish ;) he listens to some weird electronic stuff that i don't like.

It does need tweaking yeah, but the number of artists it matches is not the only factor. It also takes into account positions etc, which is why 362 matches can be very high and 140 super.

  • The Taste-o-meter is a nice idea! It does need some improvement, though. It seems the program (or script, or algorithm, or what have you) is more accurate when it measures a low compatibility, and is often exagerating when measuring a super. One thing I didn't like is that it seems to highlight the bands I've played less often. I can see the reason for that, but I would prefer to see the opposite. If I didn't play an artist often, is because I didn't like it, and I'm not likely to change my mind about it in a short time. That's my opinion. Anyway, nice improvements! :-)

Here's mine from my top and 2nd neighbors:
Your musical compatibilty rating with Fick6969 is: Very High. You share 362 artists in common.

Your musical compatibilty rating with listherine20 is: Super. You share 165 artists in common.

I would think 362 in common would give Super, no matter what..

  • I suppose,it also depends on how many artists there are not in common.

I can see what people are saying here and agree the t-o-m probably needs tweaking, but I am wondering if part of what the neighbor/taste-o-meter disjunction reveals is the need to tweak the neighbors algorithm (which at least in my case seems far too disproportionately weighted toward the one band I listen to obsessively).

  • Yeah ... When I look at some of my neighbours. I think "why are they, I don't like the crap they listen"

And, I have seen some people who have themselves as neighbour.
People who have someone as neighbour, but not the reserved way, etc.

So I suppose, also the neighbour algoritm needs tweaking.
and/or maybe merging them into one algoritm later.

Me too. And that's quite strange.

People who have someone as neighbour, but not the reserved way, etc.

Actually that's the way it's supposed to be. Despite its name, the neighbour feature is not reciprocal. It's calculated in some other way. The old Audioscrobbler site used to show you everybody who has you as a neighbour (reverse neighbours), but it was taken out and the admins say it's not coming back, no matter how much we ask for it.

Reverse neighbors is something I'd definitely use too. :'(

  • The taste-o-meter is a great addition - something extra that would be nice is to be able to expand the list of bands that you have in common. Next to t-o-m it says "you have 123 bands in comming including.." it would be nice if there was an button like the shoutbox "open in new window" button which showed all 123 bands in order.

I would use reverse neighbours too. I am convinced nobody has me as a neighbour. I dont appear in the neighbours list of any of my top neighbours despite there being several other names cropping up on all their lists.

If you use Firefox browser with Greasemonkey extension you'll probably like the script "Last.fm - Highlight Same Artists". It highlights artists that you listen to on other users' profiles. You can find it here.

I also think you should tweak the neighbors algorithm. Hmm, and it is a secret or can you tell us how are neighbours generated right now? I think there are many users who can help you improve it.

  • @mieteck: Cheers for the tip on the FF script. I will check it out

@last.fm: it would actually be really nice to have a little control panel for tweaking the algorithm that selects your neighbours - like the "less obscure... more obscure" slider for recommendations. Maybe you could weight for things like matches for individual tracks & albums rather than bands etc. Plus geo-location weighting, what kind of bands you like to attend events by etc.

    love

I love, love, love the taste-o-meter.

  • something which noone has though of yet.(i think)

I think we have established that the two alogoriths for neighbours and taste o meter need to be refined of fused in some way but how.

    So, i thought thus.

The taste o meter should probably work on how high the bands rank in your charts in comparison to other people(similar to the way top fans for artists for individual bands are calculated)

    OR

The could purly go on nieghbours, so your top neibour would have the highest ranking on your tasteometer.

Thanks for reading, i hope flaneur or russ take this into account

As I said above, neighbours are not reciprocal, so you shouldn't expect to appear in your neighbours' lists. If you want to know who has you as a neighbour, use this search string in Google:

    YourUserName neighbours site:www.last.fm/user/

Replace YourUserName with your username (duh). You will have to sort the results, because it will also show those pages in whose shoutboxes you have written. Look for pages with a URL like http://www.last.fm/user/SomeUserName/neighbours/.

    wow
i did what hokstein said, with my user name and brought back pages and pages of results, i did it again with hotchk's user name and got back 2 pages, neither page produced any real neighbors for him... u must just be extremely unique hotchk :)

I documented this in my journal. It has worked for some people and less for others. I got 433 results, but I shout everywhere in the site. Like 6 or 7 were neighbors, but I didn't check much past the first few pages of results.

I have tried this google trick before and only hits were for friends and posts - nobody has me as a neighbour! I feel like Grizzly Adams out here. C'mon someone else must listen to Pixies and Nirvana ;o)

  • The Taste-o-meter is a good idea! Even if it does not function accurately, it is nevertheless very informative - and I find the approximate values are sufficient perfectly. If I want to know more details about a user/neighbour and its hearing habits, I check in its Tag department.

Suddenly every one of my neighbours is rated as super. Some of them are a little questionable though.
