Scrobbling bugs with Google Music 3.0

  • Scrobbling bugs with Google Music 3.0

Since Google released Google Music 3.0 on Android, every time the app is opened or given focus, the current song in the app, even if it is paused, is scrobbled. If you look at my profile, you'll see that 'Incubus - Nice to Know You' was scrobbled 27 times. It was paused, it wasn't on repeat 27 times.

  • We're aware of the scrobbling issues with Google Music Beta and are working on a fix. In the meantime, you should disable scrobbling in our app's settings, otherwise you'll have to remove a bunch of duplicates from your profile.

  • Thank you!
I assume this fix will be released in an update of the app itself?

  • Waiting for the fix :( Every time i pause a song, or just fastforward one it is scrobbled xD

  • We've released an update to address the multiple scrobbles bug with Google Music Beta. Due to limitations with the new Google Music app, the adjustable scrobble point wont work, any song played longer than 30 seconds will count as a scrobble. We'll continue working to resolve this last issue, however today's update will at least prevent the duplicate scrobbles and the scrobble notification getting stuck in your notification area.

  • Excellent news! Thanks for the update.

  • Even with the update, I'm still getting duplicates when a song is paused. I get the initial scrobble after 30 seconds, but I'm still getting another scrobble if I pause and resume (though it doesn't show up immediately--I see the song listed again as "now playing", then it disappears, and then after a couple of minutes the second scrobble appears)

  • Resuming a song and listening for another 30 seconds will count as another scrobble. There is currently no way to determine the playback position or song duration from Google Music 3.0, so our app can't tell the difference between resuming a track or starting it from the beginning. We've reached out to Google about these issues, and hopefully we can work with them to come up with a way to access all the data we need to scrobble their new Music app properly.

  • As a temporary fix, why not just refuse to scrobble the same track twice without another song playing (even if just for a second) in the interim? This would correct the huge problem of duplicate scrobbles and replace it with the much less serious problem of not getting multiple scrobbles if you really did have one song on repeat.

  • Well, right now, without pausing the song it scrobbles two times for me :S It scrobbles at the beggining and another time when the song ends.

  • Any closer to a fix guys? This is really screwing up my scrobbles!

  • *crickets*

"...The unnamed feeling, it comes alive."
  • I came here looking to see if it'd support it, only to find out I needed to refresh my page lol. It's working fine for me, great work guys! I haven't changed any settings, so I feel bad I can't help. Or maybe that update the other day fixed it before I even started using it. In any event, Google Music owns so far. :)

  • It does seem to be behaving better as of recently. Thanks!

  • --Post removed--. Saw that it is already in the list of known problems. Thanks for working on the Google Music bugs!

  • I am having this issue and it happens without any music playing. My phone randomly scrobbles the last song played multiple times a day. Any word on another update?

  • I'm getting double-scrobbles as well. It looks like launching Google Music also silently launches the built-in Music app, could this have something to do with the repeats?

I tried disabling the "Scrobble droid Music" or whatever the option is, thinking this would leave only the Google player to be scrobbled, but that just resulted in no scrobbles at all - which made me even more suspicious of the droid Music being the culprit.

    ~update~

I set an app killer to auto-kill the droid Music, haven't had double scrobbles since. Well, unless I pause.

    Someday never comes.
  • Issue persists also with Google Music 4.0.9

The issue seems to persist also with Google Music 4.0.9. Since it is affecting our app, too, I tried to open a issue in the android code repository:

    [url= http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22256] http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22256

Please star it if you want to gather their attention on the bug.

  • The current version of our app works around this issue by ignoring meta changed notifications if there hasn't first been a play state changed notification indicating a track is playing.

As a workaround to the other issue mentioned in this thread, the current version of the app will look up the track duration on Last.fm if it's not available directly from the music player, so the scrobble percentage point should be working again for Google Music.
