Julie Ruin is the brainchild of the phenomenal Ms. Kathleen Hanna, frontwoman of '90s riot grrrl band Bikini Kill. In 1997, after the split of Bikini Kill, Kathleen began recording tracks as Julie Ruin in her Olympia, Washington apartment on a broken-sampler and $40 drum machine. The result was a 15-track album of lo-fi brilliance in which Kathleen tackles such subjects as police brutality, the exploitation of women in the music industry, and the need for a female-defined cultural force in society.
