The last album you got that really got you

  • The last album you got that really got you

I collect too many damn CDs and I'm always on the lookout for more. I'm interested to know what the last album was that you bought, stole, whatever that really grabbed you by the ears and buried its way into your skull, as if to create a space for itself inside your cerebrum.

Right now mine is I'll Sleep When You're Dead. It's only April but I'm pretty sure this will be on my top 10 for the year; it's a truly amazing slice of hip-hop that leaves shattered corpses of genre stereotypes. The waking nightmare of watching an old friend destroying himself, Tasmanian Pain Coaster; being caught up in a war beyond your imagination, from Dear Sirs to Habeas Corpses; Flyentology, a re-examination of one's epistemology via technological terror; and all the usual street shit and more... I'm kind of liking this at the very least on a lyrical level. Production's seriously fabulous too, noisy and detailed without being excessive or clashing, and he managed to pull out a Trent Reznor collab which doesn't sound whiny and weak. Haven't spotted a single truly weak track yet.

So... 'fess up. What's yours? And be honest. I don't care whether it's reputable or not. And if it is legitimately highbrow, please to not being pretentious about it, k? :3

Last album that reallt got to me? Man, I dunno. Usually when I get an album (regardless fo the how) it's usually only one or two songs that 'get me'.

    So here's a couple:

'Open Your Eyes' by Snow Patrol
(particularly towards the end where it builds up.)

'The Green Fields of France' by The Dropkick Murpheys

'Harbour' and 'Eric's Song' by Vienna Teng

    Bands in general:

    Breaking Benjamin

    Say Hi To Your Mom

  • Last album I was given? Youth Pixxel, it's really pretty interesting so many 8-bit Nintendo styled beeps and buzzes, t'was a lot of fun really. Thanks Retro~

The last CD I bought that had me listening to it way too much was Home Video's No Certain Night Or Morning. It takes a lot of work to have something that minimalistic to not sound dull after 20 or 30 listens.
The lyrics are somewhat serious sounding but are actually pretty silly in places. Amanda says sometimes it really sounds like they're halfway through eating a sandwich and just happen to be recording a song.
But yes, totally rad and highly enjoyable.

Argh, now I'm going to have to listen to it again.
I'm really sad I missed them when they toured here. :(

  • Last actual album I bought and love is Kirite. If anyone is familiar with Mitsuda's style they'll know how this album sounds. It's a soundtrack to a book, which is sadly in Japanese and hence I can't read it. But who needs to read it, the music speaks volumes. It's gentle and yet energetic. I'm a sucker for Mitsuda's celtic influenced sound.

Now... last album I *coughdownloadedcough* acquired through less legit avenues and listen to over and over again is Home. I love her voice. Her music is happy and cheerful and it gets me smiling because she sounds like she had fun when she recorded this album. Personally I think it is rare to hear a singers facial expressions in their voice, but Angela does it for me.

All that being said, I rarely ever do albums. What gets me, as Shitboy mentioned above, is individual songs.
Don't get me started on all the vocal tracks from Xenogears and Xenosaga or Rootless Tree

    SITHboy. Not SHITboy.

    :/

  • The last three Isis albums are still totally with me - hearing them last year felt like I was discovering metal all over again. Seeing them live was the icing on the cake! ;v;

I'm waiting on a bunch of albums to come out this year, especially from Tomahawk and Midnight Juggernauts. Pretty sure I'll enjoy the Maxïmo Park album when I get around to buying it too!

  • Last good albums

    LOL@above

Last album purchased for myself that I looped to no end was Amadlozi 2000 back in 2002. Brenda's music is best described as African pop. They used to play her songs heaps in the clubs here :D

Last album downloaded; songs from which I'm still looping: Shock Value from 3 weeks ago. It's been a while since I got hold of an album where I find >5 songs to loop.

Seriously? I'll have to give Brenda Fassie a look then.

Timbaland's seriously on my shit list right now – sampling is one thing, and can be used for wonderful effect, but this is just plain arsebanditry. Wanker should pay proper respect to the demoscene instead of ripping them off. (Plus ripping off the whole fucking track makes him no better a producer than P. Fucking Diddy.) Needless to say that I won't be investigating his dreck.

Got a few new ones that I might investigate, including the new Nine Inch Nails (released less than four years after the last one! I nearly had a heart attack). I reckon it's pretty good so far, but El-P's still standing above it. Will see how long it lasts. Also: Opeth, Tears for Fears, and the Inspector Gadget soundtrack. (I hope there are more cues available out there.)

  • Argh, last weekend led to me buying moar music and I'm pretty addicted to it already. T_T This week I'm mostly listening to Pink + Green, Pink (not a theme I swear) and 300 Percent Density. I bought the new Maxïmo Park album like I said I would, but it isn't hitting me the way the aforementioned three things are.

I've been listening to Year Zero for a while now and will probably buy this week... NIN albums really seem to grow on me over time o_O

  • Yeah I have to admit Year Zero has really grabbed me over the last week or so. I bought it today.
I mean I know I'm a hopeless Nine Inch Nails fanboy of sorts. It's been a while since I've enjoyed a NIN album this much. I guess the whole ARG thing isn't helping that.

I should really get around to listening to something else this week or I'll have to drink the water. :(

  • None, never nothing...

Well technically none but I do er..."borrow" my friends CD to er..."listen" to.
They all happened to be "Iron Maiden" and "Dream Theater" CDs so far but soon a "Blind Guardian" one will be coming along.

  • I borrowed Year Zero off a friend and it's been getting pretty much constant play. <3

Last CD I myself actually bought was At War With The Mystics, which was quite good. Other recently acquired CDs that I love are Thunder, Lightning, Strike and Takk.... Yeah, I'm random.

It's food nouveau... the shape of love.

Last CD I bought was Thom Yorke's "The Eraser".
Has lots of blips and bleeps which i like coupled together with more organic sounds..
The sound of the record might be claustrophobic for some, but it's really grown on me.
