Sam Beam is clearly a brilliant lyricist, so let's hear your favorite of his words.

Personally, I dig this bit from "The Trapeze Swinger":

    Please, remember me, my misery
And how it lost me all I wanted
Those dogs that love the rain and chasing trains,
the colored birds above there running
    In circles round the well
And where it spells on the wall behind St. Peter's
So bright with cinder gray and spray paint
"Who the hell can see forever?"

The entire lyric of that song is brilliant. It's a beautiful story told in the form of a gorgeous poem. I'm hard pressed to find a better lyric - it rivals some of Dylan's best IMO.

    My other favorites:

Cinder and Smoke - his most haunting song. It's like a charcoal sketch just hinting at the larger image. Love it.

Dead Man's Will - simple and heart-breaking. I love the selection of the 4 objects. I prefer the acoustic demo version over the one he recorded with Calexico.

Bird Stealing Bread - I love how he turns this image around throughout the song.

Sorry for the long post :) you can tell I love this man's lyrics.

  • Dead Man's will is another EXCELLENT choice. I was wrestling with that one too because each time I hear it it gets to me, particularly the bit about the string that pulls the baby tooth.

AND--not that I don't love Dylan--but in general Iron & Wine gives him a stiff bit of competition.

Basically the whole of Lion's Mane:

"Love is a tired symphony you hum when you're awake,
Love is a crying baby Mama warned you not to shake.
Love is the best sensation hiding in the Lion's Mane."

"The water's there to warm you and the earth is warmer when you laugh"

"Love is a scene I render when you catch me wide awake. Love is a dream you enter though I shake and shake and shake you. Love is the best endeavor waiting in the lion's mane."

    Two Hungry Blackbirds

Spoke to a mother whose baby drowned
Gave me advice, or a rumor she once heard:
