  • Best Albums of 2011 / Upcoming Releases

    10 Jan 2011, 20:47 by hurricane_mario

RIP this journal. Here's the upcoming releases I actually care about:
Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn Of Events
Devin Townsend - Ghost 2 (September)
Nightwish - Storytime (Single September, Album December)
Old Silver Key (Alcest) - Tales of Wanderings (Sept 16)
We Came As Romans - Understanding What We've Grown To Be (9/13/11)
    Angels & Airwaves - LOVE PART 2 (11.11.11)
Lunar Aurora - ? (December, hopefully!)

    2011 Releases:
    1) Format is "Artist - Album (Genre) (Best songs, if I so choose)"
    2) Note that these ratings are based on the album as a whole, not individual songs. This includes production quality, how cohesive all of the songs sound, etc. I definitely prefer concept albums, which progress through a story or similar type of thing.
    3) You will note I have a fairly eclectic taste in music. The fact is, if I listened to the album in it's entirety, it's going in here. If I couldn't finish, it's 2.5 or below, or not in here. Also (obviously) if it's bad it's 2.5 or below.
    4) I feel the need to add "...blew away expectations" or "...disappointment" to the end of some of these. Should be self-explanatory.
    5) Please comment/dispute these and recommend releases I missed!

    1. Woods of Desolation - Torn Beyond Reason (Atmospheric/Depressive Black Metal) (The Inevitable End, November) ...blew away expectations

  • My favorite (mostly metal) albums of 2010 - Final list!

    30 Dec 2010, 23:55 by hurricane_mario

I am fairly open-minded (as you should be), so expect any genre in here, though metal is definitely my favorite. However, I usually won't bother to review non-metal releases unless it's one of the extremes - really good, or really bad and I feel like trashing it. Though, I'm just realizing that my taste has shifted away from metal even more this year...

This is my final list, containing almost every album I have listened to which came out in 2010. I will not be updating this entry any more unless someone enlightens me to something super-fantastic that came out this year that I missed. I can’t believe 2010 is over already, it seems like yesterday it was new years eve, and now it is tomorrow again. I will likely not do a list like this again next year, its too much work. But it's been fun and a good way to keep track of the excessive amounts of music I like. Perhaps next year just a top 20 and other great ones.

A playlist including one song off each of the top 20 albums and 7 other songs, is up on my blog as of 1/9/11... Go download it (link in my profile)! Songs with an asterisk next to them are on my blog, I will try to get all the top 20 (Except Alex Band due to a complaint) on the blog by the end of January.

Bold albums are a must-listen! Top 20 are in order, rest of categories are alphabetical. " ...disappointment" means albums I could not wait for did not meet or exceed expectations.

Keep in mind, I am rating these albums as a whole, not judging it based on the quality of particular songs. For example, if there are no songs that stand out as good, but the album is a concept album that reveals to me the meaning of life through music, it would probably be #1. Production is a BIG part of my review process as well, it's 2010 so I want my albums to sound futuristic, refined and shiny!

And please comment, either to debate my reviews or to recommend me albums I don't know about!

  • My Favorite albums of 2010. Updated 12/3

    1 Sep 2010, 19:10 by hurricane_mario

I am fairly open-minded (as you should be), so expect any genre in here, though metal is definitely my favorite. However, I usually won't bother to review non-metal releases unless it's one of the extremes - really good, or really bad and I feel like trashing it.

Top 10 in order, rest of categories are alphabetical.

" ...dissapointment" Where albums I really wanted did not meet or exceed expectations.

    bold is a must-listen!!

And please comment, either to debate my reviews or to recommend me albums I don't know about!

(If you want to read huge reviews for albums through july, go here. I got tired of doing the reviews and it's too much to read.)

    * = These albums are on my blogspot... click the link in my profile if you want to hear them. ... Watch for a 74-minute "Best of 2010" playlist at the end of the year :)

    "Top 10" Updates:
March 17 - Almost time for someone to get kicked off the top 10! How exciting.
March 20 - Rage + Troll kicked. Replaced with Alcest + Les Discrets. I knew they would make it into my list.
March 27 - True kicked because I simply haven't listened, whereas other albums have been on constant repeat. Replaced with Sofa Surfers.
April 24 - Sorry I've been pretty busy with school and whatnot, so I am not trying as many albums as I want to, and definitely am not even touching this journal even though I want to. Wilds Forlorn kicked for Mago de oz. Finally, cause i heard this album 2+ weeks ago.)
June 16 - Tough choice, but had to make room for Lantlos. Sorry Kalmah.
June 17 - Kicked 8,9,10... Mago De Oz, Counterparts, Six Magics, cause I'm realizing they don't quite match up to the others. Added The Breathing Process because I suddenly realized how revolutionary it sounds.
July 10 - Not reviewing Senmuth albums anymore unless there's something phenomenal, as the rate of releases is overwhelming. If he takes his time to really flesh out his vision we get something amazing and unique like "Секененра" but most of his releases are good (7/10) at best.
July 27 - The Breathing Process re-kicked (lol) for some new stuff that I have been very addicted to (Including kalmah which I previously kicked but now I love more, go figure). Tough choice but there's only 10 slots. Have a feeling I'll extend it to 15 or 20 by years end.
Aug 31 - Alcest kicked for Angra.
Oct 22 - Burzum and Analog Rebellion kicked because I simply haven't listened. I've been addicted to Arid and Rev. Renaissance.
Oct 24 - Kalmah kicked for depreciation guild

    Orden Ogan - Easton Hope

Promising yet flawed work of music. All These Dark Years is an awesome track with good vocals and decent melodies, maybe a bit too reminiscent of some sort of fusion between Keldian and Blind Guardian

Rest of Tracks like Easton Hope,Nobody Leaves, The Black Heart,Goodbye sound like an unholy and heretic fusion between DragonForce, some sort of metalcore abdn and Blind Guardian

Currently having really mixed opinions on this band and album, but one fact is clear. Its still one of better Blind Guardian clones and it brings something innovative to the formula.

    Orphaned Land
The Never Ending Way of ORwarriOR

Interesting work of music. Interesting work of art. Most of songs have unique sound with a spice of oriental.

Tracks like Breath in The Abyss ,The Path Part 1 - Treading Through Darkness, The Path Part 2 – The Pilgrimage To Or Shal, New Jerusalem Really leave a strong and unique impression.

The guitar solos in The Neverending Way deserve a honorary mention too.

Solution .45 - For Aeons Past

Possibly best album of 2010 hands down.

Tracks like Gravitational Lensing, Lethean Tears and the killer track Clandestinity Now make sure that you come back to this album again and again.

Really unique and awesome work that retains the spirit of old Scar Symmetry while bringing something new to that feel. Awesome solos and awesome dual vocals.

Can't wait for their second effort.

    5/5

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Bruce Kulick - BK3

A decent, if a bit generic solo album with a lot of quest musicians.

The style varies and changes with each song. From a bit more aggressive Fate, which has shades of Freak Kitchen in there, to deliciously evil and malicious Hand of the King, to glam, hair metal like Dirty Girl, to relaxing and almost alternative I'll Survive

A decent album of mixed genres.

    4/5

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Diabulus In Musica - Secrets

Possibly one of the best albums of 2010.

The opening track Come to Paradise is strong and impressive, even if a bit reminiscent of Epica.

Nocturnal Flowers is a bit more traditional track for the genre. Great melodies, awesome female vocals and strong refrain - all what it needs to draw you in and never let go.

Evolution's Whim - Possibly the best track in the album. Female vocals, their beauty, their power really shine in this track. These magnificent and strong vocals combined with awesome, catchy melody of the song and very unusual refrain make the best song of this album.

New Era - Second best track of the album. yet again awesome female vocals and catchy melodies.

Under the Shadow (of a Butterfly) -is the third best track and possibly my favorite one. soothing and awesome melodies and meaningful lyrics.

Songs like Lonely Soul, Lies in your Eyes and St.Michael's Nightmare(for first 1 minute and 30 seconds and their uber awesome catchy-ness that I could re-listen again and again) deserve a mention too.

    Avantasia - The Wicked Symphony

Another lackluster effort of Tobias Sammet. Most of tracks are completely bland, uninspiring, with forced bombastic feel and pop music elements.

The title track, The Wicked Symphony is uninspiring and bland The intro for it is decent, but is soon followed by pop-music-jon-bon-jovi-like song, where tobias tries to impersonate Roy Khan of Kamelot...Which is really sad.

Wastelands - a generic power metal filler track with Kiske on vocals. It actually hurts to listen to it, as you can feel that Tobias Sammet TRIED to create something reminiscent of old good Avantasia there, but just could not find that spirit, that emotion anymore and it came out as generic power metal track with mainstream refrain :<

Scales of Justice - Great track thanks to the vocal abilities of Tim Ripper Owens. The lyrics and melodies are still generic, but the vocal performance gives the song power and livens it all up.

Dying for an Angel is the "shame" of album. Its totally bland, uninspiring commercial song in the line of Bon Jovi songs like Have A Nice Day. Generic repeatable refrain, simp0listic pop lyrics and stagnant song style.

Blizzard On Broken Mirror - A decent track.with decent melodies. Sadly the refrain is generic and the lyrics are as generic as they can get.

Runaway Train - Now this song I would have expected to hear as a filler track in some Jorn Lande album or some generic band

Crestfallen - Another "shame" of this album. Tobias Sammet Meets Donald The Duck. Bland uninspiring mix of , and

Forever Is A Long Time - What is this? Avantasia tribute band? Jorn Lande Tribute Band? While lyrics are decent, the whole song just screams filler-track...

Black Wings - "generic rock" meets emo lyrics meets ozzy-osbourne bombastics....

States Of Matter - Decent power metal track. And hey for the first time in this whole album, the song has the spirit, the emotion of old, good Avantasia

    1/5
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Avantasia - Angel of Babylon

Better than Wicked Symphony. In a sense, if both albums were one album, with bad tracks taken out and good tracks left or improved, this might have been quite a good work...

Stargazers - Generic power metal track. But way better than Wastelands. Sure its in style of nu-Edguy, nu-Avantasia, with all its pop elements and etc, but this is actually one of those cases where it works. The refrain feels like it coems from Helloween song.

Angel of Babylon - Good title track. While it is still full of nu-Avantasia, it retains some of the feel from back the times of The Metal Opera. Listenable. Awesome refrain.

Your Love Is Evil - A "shame" of this album. A commercial metal song that would fit right in with "artists" like Rasmus or Evanescence....

Death Is Just a Feeling - generic filler track that tries to impersonate The Toy Master

Rat Race - nu-Edguy like power metal track. Good quality melodies, paired with mediocre lyrics and generic, but awesome refrain.

Down In The Dark - commercial metal intro, followed by generic Jorn Lande track, followed by Bon Jovi and nu-Avantasia.

Blowing Out The Flame - generic nu-Edguy/nu-Avantasia ballad filler track.

Symphony Of Life - Oh, the Evanescence track of album, which pretty much defines ~99% of commercial female-fronted "metal". While track is catchy and vocals are quite unique(but annoying), the track yet another Dying for an Angel and Lost in Space

Alone I Remember - Ah the generic hardrock filler-track of album.

Promised Land - now if everything in the three albums of nu-Avantasia sounded like this, I would be friggin happy. Awesome song, who first had the misfortune of NOT getting into Scarcepop album. Awesome melodies and vocals.

Journey To Arcadia - One of the most old-avantasia-like tracks of album too. A ballad/epilogue done right. Reminds me of the old good times when Avantasia contained tracks like Into The Unknown or Farewell. Good times those were. And this track confirms that Tobias knows how to write good music, but decides to go the sellout way :[

    MASTERMIND - Insomnia

good album , proving that the band contains only professional musicians. Unique and awesome female vocals.

Tracks worth mentioning: Broken,Meltdown, Pretty Words, No Answer, Nietzsche

    3/5

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Döxa - Once... and for All

    A decent symphonic metal effort.

Tracks to mention: Eternal Awakenings, The Devil in Love, Standing for your Wishes, To Die Only Once, Sins Of Symmetry, Heaven Is Frozen

I'm open to any recommendations, even if they're not metal.
  • There's hope for Stratovarius! (And for that matter, Revolution Renaissance too)

    9 Jun 2008, 02:42 by hurricane_mario

So this whole business with Stratovarius breaking up shocked and confused me so I'm writing this more for myself than anyone.

Stratovarius broke up like last October but didn't make the official announcement until like March. I personally feel that they are the "best" power metal band. As in, they do it best, put the most feeling into it and are the most innovative. Not my favorite, but the best. What I thought was that Kotipelto (singer) had tension with Timo Tolkki (guitarist/composer), which is true, but I figured the rest of the band would go with T, and K would go back to his solo albums. I was content with that.

But today I looked into it more, and Found out that instead, Tolkki is finding new, permanent members. Ok, so Stratovarius recorded the entire album with Kotipelto on vocals (which has recently leaked under the name Revolution Renaissance - New Era, which I feel should be changed to Stratovarius as they are the ones that recorded it).

Then they broke up, I read an interview with Tolkki and it seems it was mainly his decision, citing poor live performance and lack of cohesion within the band. I don't know about that, as the "Last Night on Earth" live in 2007 I thought was great. But listening to this unreleased album I do understand the move, K seems uninspired and weak even though the music is great. So T quickly pulled the most popular power metal singers to re-record vocals and throw the record out the door. Meanwhile the members (bass/keyboard) of Stratovarius are still on the final album (right?) so I find this odd. Mirka Rantanen (Thunderstone) on drums, Pasi Heikkilä (45 Degree Woman) on bass and Joonas Puolakka on keyboards. But it still seems random and just weird to me.
Now here's what I found today.

    http://www.timotolkki.com/WAVE%20OF%20RIGHTS.jpg
Tolkki gave the name "Stratovarius" to the three other band members, and cited that he will not accept any money from any past or future albums. I found this a bit extreme, but honestly I still think he's crazy. (he had some kind of mental break down a few years ago)

Or maybe not? He is auditioning and getting new members for RR. I nearly shat myself when I read.
http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog&FriendID=85129540 (scroll down to May 8/12/13/27)
The singer from Adagio and the drummer from Aquaria? Now he is auditioning bassists, who is he going to get, Billy Sheehan? This band could be so epic.

Meanwhile as the 3 remaining Stratovarius members have rights to the name, they could release new albums, and as they are still very popular would profit. Plus it would feel completely fresh as (obviously) they will have a new composer.

  • Daniele Liverani and his rock opera - Genius!

    10 May 2008, 17:27 by The_Thomas

As I once said: everyone knows Avantasia and Ayreon, many knows Aina, but no one knows Genius. This is the place to talk about that definitely interesting project.

Well, who listened to Avantasia knows that this is only concept album (Tobias Sammet admit it too) with a lot of guest musicians. Opera is only part of name. Plot is only something to keep it running.

Daniele Liverani's Genius is different. Lyrics are based on dialogs between characters. Author wanted to make it as close to 'normal' opera as it is possible. There is things like arias, recitatives, choirs, castratos (:D, ya know, sometimes power metal vocals sounds a little 'girlish' :P) and others. I'm not the one who can talk about operas. I wrote this journal only to enlighten a little last.fm people. :P

Story is simple (but better than Aina...). It's about boy Genius (on first two CD's pictured by Mark Boals [Yngwie J. Malmsteen], on last one by Dc Cooper [Royal Hunt, Silent Force]) who by mistake entered world of dreams and messed it a lot. Good (and innocent) king Mc Chaos (John Wetton [King Crimson, Uriah Heep, Asia]) was found guilty of this so Genius and his Twinspirit (Daniel Gildenlow) must rescue king's baby and fix this.

Many famous vocals were used to make three acts of Geniuses story. Among noticed before: Lana Lane (CD1, [Ayreon]), Chris Boltendahl (CD1, [Grave Digger]), Joe Vana (CD1, [Mecca]), STEVE WALSH (CD1, [Kansas]), Oliver Hartmann (CD1, [At Vance]), Philip Bynoe (CD1,2,3, [Steve Vai]), Russell Allen (CD2, [Symphony X, Allen/Lande], Edu Falaschi (CD2, [Angra]), Jeff Martin (CD2, [Racer X]), Eric Martin (CD2,3, [Mr. Big]), Liv Kristine (CD2, [Leaves' Eyes]), Johnny Gioeli (CD2, [Axel Rudi Pell]), Rob Tyrant (CD2, [Labyrinth]), Jorn Lande (CD3, [Jorn, Masterplan, Allen/Lande), Andrea Dätwyler (CD3, [Lunatica]) and Toby Hitchcock (CD3, [Pride of Lions]). It's weird that fans of all this artists do not know Genius.

And remember - right tag is Daniele Liverani not Genius. Second one is only some black rapper...

  • ♪ ♪ ♪ The top six Angra albums. ♪ ♪ ♪

    4 May 2008, 06:53 by hurricane_mario

In celebration of http://www.angra.net/ being down, (jk I'm on the floor crying), I am listing the 6 Angra albums in order. This is fact, there is no disputing it.

    1) Fireworks
Every song on this album is atmospheric, emotional, heartfelt, amazing, and there is nothing else like it in the world. Paradise is quite possibly the epicest song in existance. Not the best, but epicest. Rainy Nights is perfect. I challenge you to find a weak song on this album. Before you start- That's right. You can't.

    2) Aurora Consurgens
Every song on this album is fantastic as well, although there are a few places they went wrong, such as the beginning of The course of Nature should have been a separate track, and Edu sounds like he has laryngitis on this album for some reason. I wish he'd just sing clean all the time, he can do it, he just chooses not to. Tracks 1-5 are all just orgasmic, then it falls off a bit where the only other stand-out track is Scream your heart out. Breaking ties is one of the best ballads I've ever heard. I also appreciate the fact that this album is a bit more progressive than most of their others.

    3) Rebirth
Almost every song is a winner on this album, too. Heroes of sand is an amazing ballad, Unholy Wars is unbelievably epic, and it falls off a bit after that but the songs are still great, though not as memorable. I kind of played them out a year ago before I discovered last.fm's similar artists feature, therefore I'm basing this journal on year old memory. Running alone is simple but great.

    4) Temple of Shadows
I honestly don't understand why everyone is "OMGROFLAMAZINGHANSIKURSHMAO" about this. It's fairly generic power metal, while it's easy to catch onto it gets old because of this. It was my favorite at first until I found songs like Carry On, Wings of Reality, Carolina IV, Nova Era, Unholy Wars, Heroes of Sand, etc. Honestly, the only superb songs on there are Spread Your Fire, Winds of Destination (not because of Hansi), Wishing Well, and Gate XIII is a fantastic finale. But the rest are rather meh in my opinion. as i said.

    5) Holy Land
Nothing to Say and Carolina IV are fantastic, but other than that, ehhh. Even the finale, Deep Blue and Lullaby for Lucifer are uninspired and dull. Overall I'd say most of the songs take too long to get to the point (such as Holy Land), or do not have one.

    6) Angels Cry
This was tough to place, but as with Rhapsody's first album, it is the weakest overall. Songs lack the energy found on later albums. The best song is Carry On, followed by Angels Cry, but the rest are a tad lame honestly. This album would be #5 if Queen of the Night and Reaching Horizons were on it, but they were for some reason cut for worse songs. Reaching Horizons just soars. Painkiller should have been on there too :D

Heh, this made me remember why they are my favorite artist. *drool*

    Fri 25 Apr – Paganfest

    Eluveitie O'Faolain:
Apparently Eluveitie could not make it. Instead a local black metal band played. I came in during their third-to-last song because of a few wrong turns, and a massively long line. They were very good but failed to get the crowd too excited. The female guitarist (bassist?) is hot. Anyway I'll be following these guys they seem very promising. Check them out...

    http://www.myspace.com/ofaolainburns

    Týr:
I had pretty high expectations for this. I have only heard Eric the Red but I will listen to the other albums after hearing this concert. They played one song from each album, including the new one out May 30th. However, they failed to excite the crowd much. There was a small mosh for each song, but not even close to what was to come. They also started a clap or 'hey' going a few times, but other than that, they need some help with their stage presence. Half the songs aren't even in English so they needed something more to get the crowd going. I wasn't even in the crowd yet, I was up in the balcony. That said, this venue is great. The Opera House in Toronto, the best view is from the balcony, which is also the bar, plus theres a second bar sectioned off behind the floor. After this I went down to the floor because, you don't get the full concert experience otherwise.

    Turisas:
There was literally a half hour break before them. I was wondering what took so long, but then I found out. They looked exactly like this on stage:

The band went absolutely insane when they came on. I don't even know what the first song sounded like because the crowd was so loud. A mosh started that covered the whole 60 square foot or so floor. Then they went right into "To Holmgard And Beyond" which people got even crazier for... Afterwards, the singer Mathias looked completely wired, and he said that this was the first time they have been in North America, and that we were the wildest crowd he has ever seen. Based on the expression he had I don't doubt it. They also played 'One More' before which, he said "The good thing about touring is you get to try many different kinds of beer" and picked up a Heineken "Look, I get to drink a dutch beer since I'm in canada!". He took a sip then the crowd started chanting "Chug!" He didn't but he finished half, then the song started, then he proceeded to throw the rest out of the can and all over the first 8 rows of the crowd. At one point he split the crowd into two sections and started a competition to see who could sing louder.

But that's not even all, the show peaked when they went into the intro for 'Rasputin' with the entire crowd chanting. I didn't even know they covered this song, but I will listen to it like 50 times now. Freakin Speed Metal at its finest.

    Ensiferum:
Honestly, I think the crowd was tired after Turisas, there was progressively less moshing and crowd surfing as the show went on, and people kept falling down (myself included, once). It was a great show, and a great stage presence and excited the crowd to participate. And it seemed like this is who most people were here for, it was the only band that a majority of people knew the words too... I didn't because I haven't listened much but I will now.

And the keyboardist is hot. (this picture doesnt really do justice)

    Overall:
Truly epic concert, and epically cheap, like 30 dollars or something for 4 awesome bands? Go to it if you haven't.
