• Find Files Fast

    22 Nov 2008, 21:12 by c4t2007

    ...from a command box with these batch files i made to emulate the "locate" functionality in many Linux distros:

    Create these files in a convenient location, e.g. "C:\index\". Create if needed.

    index.bat:
    @echo off
    dir /s /a %1:\ > %~dp0files_%1.txt

    findex.bat:
    @echo off
    rem Regular expression version:
    rem findstr /NIR "%2" %~dp0files_%1.txt
    findstr /NI /C:%2 %~dp0files_%1.txt

    Usage:

    index <drive letter>

    Will store the file info on the specified drive in <location of batch file>files_<drive letter>.txt
    Uses about 0.6 MB per GB of small files.

    findex <drive letter> "<search term(s)>"

    That will show you the hits and the line numbers you need to look up the folders they're in. You can also skip this step and use your text viewer to search.
    If you don't want to look up the path manually, install Python (pre-installed with OS X and many Linux distros) and use this:

    locate.bat:
    @echo off
    python %~dp0locate.py %1 %2

    locate.py:
    # Locate files using dir cache.
    # By CT, 22nov08.
    # 27nov08 v1.1 - Handle lowercase drive input. Multiple drives at once. (python locate.py "c,d,e" "stuff you want to find") (no spaces in drive list)
    # 28dec08 v1.2 - Default drives.
    # 05jan09 v1.2.1 - Fix path when called from other location.

    import os, re, sys

    if len(sys.argv) == 2:
    drives = "C,D,E,I,J".split(",")
    term = sys.argv[1]
    else:
    drives = sys.argv[1].upper().split(",")
    term = sys.argv[2]

    my_dir = os.path.dirname(sys.argv[0])

    for drive in drives:
    #print "Searching %s for %r..." % (drive, term)

    fp = open(my_dir+"\\files_"+drive+".txt", "r")
    drive_path = drive + ":\\"
    last_folder = ""
    current_folder = ""

    while 1:
    line = fp.readline()
    if not line:
    break

    i = line.find(drive_path)
    if i >= 0:
    current_folder = line

    elif re.search(term, line, re.I):
    if current_folder != last_folder:
    print current_folder
    last_folder = current_folder

    print line

    Speaking of paths, your system checks specified paths for the executable you wish to run; add Python and batch file paths to your environment variables so you can run them from any location.

    If you wish to modify this, i suggest SciTE and the built-in help of Python, e.g.:
    python -c "import os; help(os.path.split)"

    Introspection is useful, too:
    python -c "import os; print dir(os.path)"

    Beware that mistakes are easy to make in a command line interface, especially with rightclicks possibly executing your clipboard.

    Comments and questions are welcome.

  • Popular Browsers Review

    3 Jan 2009, 21:07 by c4t2007

    Firefox 3:
    + Easy bookmarking with tags.
    + Lots of extensions.
    + Session Manager.
    - Crashes a lot due to plugins like Flash.
    - Automatic crash feedback hasn't worked for a year or so.

    Opera 9.6:
    + Fast.
    + Stable so far; no slowdowns or crashes yet.
    - Bells and whistles everywhere, takes some getting used to.
    - Clunky bookmarking.
    - Frequent updates which are a little less smooth than those of Firefox, but notification appears better.
    - Transfers tab for downloads instead of separate download window.
    - Couldn't download large .mp4 file for unknown reason.
    - Often chooses cached content instead of checking for updates. Might be a spec issue that all other browsers ignore.

    Internet Explorer 8 Beta:
    + Rarely crashes.
    + Only reloads the page when a plugin (usually Flash) crashes.
    - Session restore doesn't work yet.
    - Still slows down Windows.
    - Might have Cookie issues with sites like OkCupid.
    - Bookmarking is slow and clunky.

    Google Chrome:
    + Properly handles crashed plugins.
    + Faster than Firefox.
    + Session restore works.
    + Easy bookmarking.
    + Task manager to discover the page that's slowing down your system.
    - No tagging.
    - No extensions.
    - Auto scroll doesn't work yet.
    - Save as has empty type dropdown and silently fails to save anything but the HTML + folder after a while!
  • 25 Song Lyrics

    17 Jan 2009, 00:54 by enlivenjoy311

    Step 1: Put your iTunes or equivalent on random.
    Step 2: Post the first line from the first 25 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing.
    Step 3: Bold out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
    Step 4: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING.
    Step 5: Tag a bunch of random people in this note.

    1. So do you feel what I feel when it all comes down?
    2. Fuck with my heart, I'll teach you what it's like...
    3. Dressed to kill you look so right, I am drunk with lust tonight.
    4. Is it me or is it hot in here?
    5. I am a little bit of loneliness, a little bit of disregard.
    6. I don't give a fuck, I'm not afraid of the worst.
    7. When I get high, I get high on speed.
    8. Where I come from isn't all that great, my automobile is a piece of crap.
    9. The night has started, here we go, I check out everything.
    10. Listen up sweetie, we all know that you're a beautiful girl in this horrible world.
    11. The day that civil glory dismembered my civility.
    12. Puncured lungs, I'm out of breath this time I'm suffocating.
    13. Now hold this tight, don't let go, no burden.
    14. Oh, well imagine, as I'm pacing the pews in a church corridor...
    15. Soon the men taste their own normalcy.
    16. Winter it will send. Throwing all you see into obscurity.
    17. The incisions on your wrist were all for show, just like you.
    18. Construction paper traffic, corner office destruction.
    19. I missed the part when we were moving forward now.
    20. The road is dry, I'm fucking delirious right now.
    21. I'm an axe grinder, pile driver. Mama says that I never, never mind her.
    22. Black plagues line a fading sky.
    23. We welcome you to the second chapter, thanks for turning the other page.
    24. This distance, this dissolution, I cling to memories while falling.
    25. Starving, searching this barren wasteland.

    The unknown can only be handled with confidence, which is why fools are so sure of their worth.

    -> unknown, sureness.
    -> chaos, order.
    -> unknown, known.

    Know thyself and all is well, right?

    How does one go about knowing oneself?

    Experiment, deduce. Left brain (science).

    If all are one (right brain, emotion), why fight? Why feel bad?

    Do you want more physical resources? Why?

    Nature/reality - is it good or is it whack? Without it, you wouldn't exist.

    Mother Nature and Father Time. Rea and Cronus.

    The truth will free your mind.

    Reality is true. Lies separate you from reality. That's fine if desired by the minds involved. Reality involves all. Logic separates true from false. Only one's imagination can be altered by mere thoughts.

    Technology is a solid measure of progress. Wisdom another.

    The only things you can blame for stupidity are your teachers, of which you are the definite one, and physics.

    So the financial crisis only affects people who spend more than they make? Good.
    Why are taxpayers giving them money, then?
