name some good bands that use keyboards as part of their live sound

I've added all of the ones I can think of off the top of my head to connections, but they're almost all goth-influenced and mostly symphonic metal.

So I'm not talking about electronic artists, not that I don't like any electronic music, but that's not a band with a keyboard, that's a producer making it on his own as an artist.

So name some here and I'll add them to the list of connections.

    Ensiferum has been added.

Nightwish and Within Temptation both have famously talented keyboard players and they're connected.

Eternal Tears of Sorrow doesn't list a keyboardist. It just says they have elements, but I haven't listened to them, so it may be obvious. I did add them to the group http://www.last.fm/group/New+Symphonic+Metal/
Just verify for me that they have a keyboardist, and I'll take your word for it.

The others definately belong here. Thanks, DarkSymphony500

  • In orther to provide variety, since till now it's almost everything symphonic or gothic metal: Yes; Camel; Caravan; Emerson, Lake & Palmer; Pink Floyd Genesis; Pendragon; Kaipa; Atomic Rooster; Frank Zappa; Porcupine Tree; Opeth (specially their last three albums -since 2005, when they did add a full-time keyboardist to the band); Symphony X; Return to Forever; Chick Corea Elektric Band; Herbie Hancock; Keane

This is the kind of thing I was looking for, Nicolás… I think… Seems to be mostly British prog rock bands from the 60's-70's, something that I couldn't know less about.

I added most of them. Herbie and Frank are producers as far as I can tell, not bands, though I guess both have performed and toured… Herbie Hancock is really a solo act for the most part, from what I've seen/heard, while Frank Zappa is known as a guitarist, so the fact that he may have played a keyboard in the studio is rather against the point for this group.

But thanks for your input. With your help, we're definitely starting to get some variety!

Ah yes, Dream Theater was one of the first artists added after I started thinking past bands. If I ever mention and rock together, people say, oh yea, like Dream Theater!

I did notice Yes and Liquid Tension Experiment from your profile so I added them.

Thanks man, bunch of good bands here, exactly the kind of thing we're looking for, mostly that I don't know.

I saw Scar Symmetry when they came to Vancouver along with The Agonist but the only keyboard on stage that night waited for Epica. In fact that show and the lack of live keyboards was one of the reasons that I started this group.

I'm doubtful about Blessed By A Broken Heart and Harmony. Sonic Syndicate appears to have dropped their keyboardist. Angra does use a keyboardist live but not as part of the band, which is just kind of insulting to role of keyboards in rock…

  • You're welcome. By the way the Incarnadine Coven page has been significantly updated since my last post here :)
    Do you play keyboard?
