Depressive Black Metal

  • Depressive Black Metal

As supposed, this thread will be about DSBM. I thought it could be a good idea...

A stupid trendy? Something good, where the "tr00 elite blakk metallers666" can finally share their feelings, or maybe you just don't give a shit?

For my own, it's quite every point. Nyktalgia is purely dumb: the level of composition is ridiculous and entirely based on the emotive side.
On the other hand, the demos and the four firsts albums of Shining really touch something. The hate against life, the solitude... And I'm not even talking about the excellent technique.

There is many examples where I can be either against, or a pure fan. What is sure is that this fucking trendy disgusts me, because that's completly retarded.

It's exactly like the emo phenomenon. "Bouh ouh, I'm listening to My Chemical Romance, my life is so hard." I call that pathetic.
But it's very similar to the kvlt elite fags. Take one person in his teenage crisis, make him listen to any evil band, and you have your own true little hater.
While I can stand that, which is less or more justified (depending on your opinion), this very emotive movement is pure shit for me.

Black Metal was never something completly "strong", we always enjoyed the so called "melancholic black metal", bands along Drudkh, Judas Iscariot, etc. I'm only talking about the trend.

Alright, that's it: what's your opinion about Depressive Black Metal?

  • Well it my opinion there are no trends in black metal or any other extreme metal genre. trends are for all those emo fags and all the screamo bullshit were its mostly about creating an image with all the black cloths, makeup and all that other faggity ass shit. you listen to what you listen too because you like it or you play what you play because you like to and dont give a shit what anybody else thinks. there are no trends, just the genres(Black Metal Death Metal) andthe subgenres(Melodic death metal, DEPRESSIVE BLACK METAL, symphonic black metal) and so on. I could really care less if some band wants me to go kill myself or whorship saten or whatever. ill listen to there music if i like it. I acually find Depressive or suisidal black metal very compelling because of its atmosphere, and how much felling goes into making it, and is felt by the listener, if of course your a fan of it. most depressive black metal bands leviathan, judas escariat, shining really arent that much different than other normal black metal bands. its when you get into BLACK AMBIENT bands like Xasthur, Burzum, Elysian Blaze, Ars Diavoli and others that the real depressive element comes through. and really, extreme metal really doesent have a big enough following to have fuckin "trends". that may just be because im from texas though. I love all genres and subgenres of TRUE extreme metal, and if you search the catalog, youll find depressive/suicidal black metal is among the extremes because of its abrasive and sometimes just plain fucked up sound.

  • My post is not supposed to be against the melancholic side of music which I really enjoy (take a look at my charts...) but all about this fucking stupid "depressive black metal" subgenre (for sure, there's exceptions to that), where the lack of technique is hided behind a very high-pitched voice.

You will surely say that's it's the same for true black metal bands, but don't worry, I totaly agree. I don't enjoy trash shit, and I cannot understand that some people feel a real interest for such bands just because it's "in the move". Moonblood had something to give, while myspace shitsound bands do not.

    http://www.myspace.com/thylight
Just listen at this. Can you seriously enjoy that? Well, I don't.

You were talking about Xasthur... But Xasthur is a real band, not just a brand.

  • oh sorry, i guess i missunderstood your article a bit. im glad you feel the same way. Did I call Xasthur a Brand? Xasthur is one of my favorite suisidal black metal bands right know. and it was acually the first band of the genre i here back in august after listening to regular black metal, death metal, and grindcore for a while. And it was after that i really started exploring the more extreme, weird, and REALLY underground shit. and i have you to say, it freaked me right the fuck out when i hered "Prison of Mirrors" for the fist time! but it also fasinated me just as much. thylights sound is ok i guess, some parts at least. its really nothing compared to the other bands iv listed though. Ya anybody who says the lack of technique is overshadowed by a high pitched voise needs to listen to a few more bands than just one of the genre. and to be perfectly honest, depressive black metal isent really about great skill....in a way. its about creating and conveying emotions, atmosphere, feelings, and images of the artists mind.

  • Yeah, you're right. And I didn't say that you did, but I tend to say that Xasthur is really different from the "bands I hate", and I know it's the same for you.

If you misunderstood me, that's probably due to my english... :D

It's quite hard to explain. A person who come to me and say "I'm depressive, help me", I'll punch his face instead. But if I see someone who's suffering while trying to hide it, I'll probably feel not only compassion, but a kind of brotherhood.

And that's the same for music. Some tunes of Lunar Aurora are really depressive, while they do not label themselves as depressive black metal.
And I cannot hold to see that some people do with their shitty music.

But I love Forgotten Tomb, on the other hand... Oh well.
Let's go for a "true or not true" game with DSBM.

  • haha, yes that could be why i missunderstood you. Both Lunar Aurora and Forgotten Tomb have some amazing material. lunars latest album "Andacht" is pretty amazing. Zyklus is also a very interesting album with the morning, day, evening, and night cycle representing each song. forgotten tombs early material is all very good. there latest work "Negative Megalomania" is kinda far away from there original formula, but its still a decent album. Have you hered Aren from Lunar Aurora's solo project called "Trist"? very intersesting mix of Black Metal and Ambient. big emphasis on "Ambient", sound effects, and noise.

Ive also gotten into alot of Funeral Doom and Drone Doom latly such as Sunn O, Until Death Overtakes Me, Beyond Black Void, Shape of Dispair, Esoteric and others. the lyrical content is pretty much identical to that of depressive black metal, but the sound way different of course, being more on the agonizingly slow but extremely heavy side most of the time.

  • For sure, Trist is one of the bands I appreciate the most (especially the songs "Hin", "Fragmente" and "Traum").
Personnaly, I didn't enjoy Negative Melomania, but the latest work is excellent.
While I love black/doom bands (such as Dolorian, Beatrik, Catacombs...) I don't like doom that much, hehe.

So anyway... You surely understand me now, I love depressing music, but I'm totally against depressive black metal.

  • Yes i think i understand know. you like depressing music, but are against the the whole preaching of depression and suiside by the band as people. if im wrong you can correct me.

yes doom is kinda hard for most other metalheads to get into. Even i have a hard time getting into it unless they really know what there doing. ya Black/Doom is a pretty good genre if its done right. Elysian Blaze i think was the first band of the genre i hered, and would probobly have to be my favorite so far. ill have to check out the bands you listed.

  • That's right my point.

I used to listen to Shape of Despair, but except for a very few bands of funeral doom bands, the only one I keep listening is Dolorian.

If you don't know this band, you should really check it out, yeah. :p

  • Can introduce you to some doom bands if you want to.

BTW, I totally agree with you, again, on the DSBM scene. What is the point of listening to music if you only feel compelled to fit in a "movement"? If you don't listen the music for the emotions/feelings the songs create, what is the point of listening to it?

Let's put some good old Electric wizard, grab a book and a smoke, and just chill out.

    FIST FUCK ÜBER ALLES!
  • sounds good to me abdule.
hey nostradanus. i did check out the bands you listed. Dolorian and Beatrik were pretty good, but Catacombs is pretty fuckin awsome! its sound very similar to Ahab from germany which plays funeral doom inspired by the novel Moby Dick. very good stuff

  • Hell yeah, Catacombs is one of my fav too.

Do not remember if he made me listen to it, or the contrary :)

    FIST FUCK ÜBER ALLES!
  • there was another funeral doom band with lyrical themes of Lovecraft called "Tyranny" that looked interesting. it showed it was similar to Catacombs and Ahab, but i cant seem to find any songs anywere. have you guys heard it before?

  • Sure I do. I have the discography on my computer but... He's dead. So I need to fix this shit in order to get back my data.

Then, I will be able to upload. Else... Google "artist name" "album name" "hostname" (e.g rapidshare)

  • lol .. I guess I agree with Nostradanus about the "oo I'm so depressed!! My mom won't let me out this saturday.. Life sux!!" too >.< but nevertheless of all the posing and suicide preaching in the songs , that's one of my favourite sub genres of extreme metal.. probably becouse my English is quite bad and if I don't read the text in google i barely understand the lyrics.. but the atmospere that this music creates (if afcourse the artist is good) is stunning.. I realy love to go outside sometimes with some book and read in some park or something like that, with DSBM terrorizing my head on my headphones.. it's .. I can't find the words in my languge, what's left in english xD

  • I think your lookin for the word Captivating or Mezmerizing. But yes, Very well said Warheart.

  • Warheart > Label Silencer as depressive black metal and I will start to cry like a baby until you give me a lolipop (strawberry flavored, please).

  • Well as I see they are already tagged as dsbm band, but .. I don't know ..their atmosphere is kind a creapy though and when I heard them for first time a year and a half ago they really blow my mind, but now as I know more bm acts and bands I consider them more like some atmosperic black metal band.. never mind, who am I to say =] a band is what you want it to be -> for one of my schoolmates there is nothing better and none band has more misanthropic lyrics than s****not ("fucking gods"). =]

..is it better that way??? .. LoL I just gave an example, damn.. nevermind, actually ..

  • sorry man. i cant second that motion. cant stand nu metal.
I have absolutly know problem with clean vocals in extreme metal though. I absolutly love bands like Scar Symmetry, Raintime, and a little bit of Dimmu. "Holographic Universe" and "Flies and Lies" are both pretty godly albums.

  • ARGHHHHH SLIPWHAT?

Dare to say the name of this cursed band and i promise you I'd change to a giant killing bot. Fucking hate those posing wankers. They don't do anything but what's trendy in order to get the more money they can. Mentioning Slipknot is one way to be in my hate list, with beeing a goth or an emo, or serving me a non alcoholized drink.

Concerning DSBM and other emo-black bands, I don't really care about what they say, I'm listening to the music and the emotions it creates in me. DSBM bands can bring me joy, sadness or can make march under the rain like i was in a fucking bloodrage. As long as the music is good, I have absolutely no problem with listening to any subgenre, even if it's DSBM, NSBM, USBM, Raw shit, or even MANOWAR.

    FIST FUCK ÜBER ALLES!
  • agread.

  • sorry man you already said it. and changing your bullitin doesent make it any better!! haha. its cool man, just dont mention slipknot or any other nu-metal crap in here again so our host doesent turn into a human molesting robot;)
