The following have a repertoire in both Cape Verdean and Portugese:

    Cesária Évora
    Lura
Bana --> Wondering why the ??, I'd specify it's Bana -- the artist the last sentence of the bio. refers to
    Talulu
    Mendes Brothers
    Simentera
    Oriazul

I've cd's by the following and their songs are mainly in Portugese but a couple of songs have a few sentences in another language, maybe Cape Verdean:

    Maria Alice
    Sara Tavares

  • Some streamable artists

Cesária Évora is probably the most streamable artist singing in Kabuverdianu. She uses the dialect of the Barlavento island of São Vicente.
Teófilo Chantre is, apart from being the composer of many Cesária's songs, another streamable Capeverdean singer who sings mainly in Kabuverdianu.
Tito Paris, who also composed for Cesária Évora, could be also considered streamable.

Marisa Monte & Cesária Évora is a dreadful attempt of conveying the Capverdian music subjects, especially the Sea subject, completely absent of the Brazilian music topics, to the, here aseptic Brazilian Portuguese language with the cloying voice of Marisa Monte who doesn't match in no way.
Cesária Évora also sings sometimes in French and she covered the tacky "Bésame mucho" for the OST of a commercial and horrible Dickens film adaptation. A commercial concession that it's not pertinent here.
So when tagging we must be aware of her Portuguese and French songs.

    Santiago island
Ferro Gaita and Finaçon are good representatives of the traditional rhythms of the Sotavento island of Santiago. Os Ferro Gaita have more international projection and could be deemed as streamable.
Beto Dias and Gil & The Perfects are two modern singers.

  • Os tubarões are another streamable band of the island of Santiago. One of its member, Ildo Lobo, was, in the years before his death, a lonely successful 'spin-off'. He was born, however, in the Barlvento island of Sal.

    OK, some added.

Sanaag: I didn't add Maria Alice and Sara Tavares yet, let's see if we get them confirmed by someone that's sure.

SacDeGemecs, many of the artists you mention as streamable don't have songs in Last.fm, maybe I'm getting confused with misspelling of their names? By the way I love that you share not only your knowledge but also your strong opinions, but I happen to like Marisa Monte's voice (cloying he said!!!) ;)

As usual I refuse to tag these artist's songs myself because I would probably do it all wrong, so any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Sorry, I think I was misunderstood.
I do like also Marisa Monte as my charts can show. But personally I think she had many times her talent wasted because of some marketing engineers or some mediocre and snobist artists as Carlinhos Brown. However when she plays her role solely, as in the disc 'Universo ao meu redor', she's simply gorgeous (except for the sickening "Statue of liberty", but it's not her fault, but the stupid David Byrne's fault).
When I described her voice as cloying I meant actually "contextually cloying", because she should not sing a morna or a coladera in that way, even if the song is a poor adaptation conceived by some shrewd marketing engineer who try to sell as many discs as he can.

As far as I know, Marisa Monte & Cesária Évora don't sing in Kabuverdianu, they only performed some songs in Portuguese and Spanish. I checked their songs here at lastfm and there is only one in Portuguese ("é doce morrer no mar") and another in Spanish ("salsa caliente"), so it's better to remove them here for the moment.

All right, Marisa Monte & Cesária Évora removed from the list then.

I can't but agree with your comments on "out of context" artists, I haven't heard this exact combo but I felt frustrated too with some other projects that were clearly thought in an office (Won't mention any, they don't deserve). Other times, when the collaboration seems to be something natural and decided by the artists themselves the results can be surprising, I'm thinking of Kila & OKI now (which is listed in Ainu)
