  Actually, if you read the full interview Portnoy gave just after leaving, it's pretty clear what he intended - the end of DT. Look at his examples of what he wanted for Dream Theater - to become like, in his words, Soundgarden, Jane's Addiction or Alice in Chains. No offence to those bands, but it's a long, long time since any of them were real creative forces in music. He wanted an "indefinite" hiatus, from which there would be no guarantee they'd ever return. So yes, he didn't want a "split" from DT - he's quite clear in the interview that he didn't want them to go on without him.

  I cannot cry.. not yet. I'm still in a shock that is just too seething. But the tears will come in time. I think I will never understand why They have decided to carry on without Mike. He was the heart of the band from the very beginning. No one could ever, ever, replace him :(
