Your Choice of 8 tracks ...

  • Your Choice of 8 tracks ...

It keeps changing. Already, I think I could make some modifications.
    (In no order at all)

1 - Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree.
2 - Slightly All The Time by Soft Machine.
3 - Finale: Beweget, doch nicht zu schnell - Symphony No 4 by Anton Bruckner.
4 - II. Lento E Largo - Tranquillissimo - Symphony No 3 by Henryk Gorecki.
5 - I Wanna Hold Your Hand by The Beatles.
6 - Wolf at the Door by Radiohead.
7 - The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
8 - IV. Adagietto: Sehr langsam - Symphony No 5 by Mahler.

If I had to rescue one track from the waves it would be ... Slightly All The Time.

Book: "Being and Nothingness" by Jean-Paul Sartre.
Luxury: A Saxophone. And an instruction manual to help me play the thing.

  • Top 8 tracks

    Hmm, interesting Mozz.

This list is, of course, subject to change over time - which makes it wonderful.

Some of my choices don't have much lyrical, or indeed musical, merit. But they are included because they remind me of a particularly important or happy time.

OK, here goes, in no particular order:

    1. Yes: Heart of the Sunrise
    2. Glenn Campbell: Wichita Lineman
    3. Manic Street Preachers: The Girl Who Wanted To Be God
    4. Claude Debussy: Danse profane
    5. High Llamas: Nomads
    6. Underworld: Pearl's Girl
    7. Jean Sibelius: The Swan of Tuonela
    8. Seal: A Prayer for the Dying

I would save the Manics from my burning bivuoac, as it would keep me sane and positive. It is a driving, anthemic song with a rousing chorus. But with a bittersweet edge.

    Top 8 Tracks...

My "all-time" favourite tracks would have to be, in this order,

1: Vier Letzte Lieder: Im Abendrot - by Richard Strauss (I intend this to be played at my funeral - simply the MOST beautiful piece of music ever composed)

2: Supper's Ready - by Genesis (It must be the Peter Gabriel rendition)

3: Dream of Stone - by Gazpacho (This transports me to nicer places...)

4: Symphony #6, First movement - by Anton Bruckner (Listen to the interplay between the horns & trombones - fantastic)

5: Ein Alpensinfonie - by Richard Strauss (Actually a tone-poem and not a symphony, but SO expressive)

6: The Dam Busters March - by Eric Coates (I learned to play this on piano at a very early age - wish I could still do it now) ((Coincidently, he also wrote the theme music to the BBC Radio program that inspired THIS group... Small world eh?))

7: Starship Trooper - by Yes (section c: Wurm, what a build up!!)

8: Symphony #2 "Resurrection", fifth movement. Im tempo des Scherzo. Wild herausfahrend - by Gustav Mahler. (contains my life motto "sterben wird Ich, um zu leben"... I'll leave that to linguists to interpret! It sends shivers down my back EVERY time I hear it!!!)

Book: I, Robot - by Isaac Asimov
Luxury item: Solar powered electric fan!!!

  • As already mentioned....this is in NO particular order...!!

    1. Ripples - Genesis - its the track that I love most on the album that I love the most.... beautiful and also one of those rare Banks/Hackett compositions.

    2. Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd A track of almost crystalline, perfect, cold beauty. Gilmour and Wright in perfect harmony with Waters lamenting poor old Syd...to me this is everything that Floyd were best at.

    3. Anesthetize - Porcupine Tree - Awesome record, takes Prog into new places. Jaw dropping in its power, feeling and weight.

    4. Massive Illusion - Gazpacho - as above really....but with maybe more emotion and that beautiful ending.....

    5. Hell Yeah - Neil Diamond - from his 2005 "12 Songs" album. A moving song about mortality and redemption. One of the closing songs of his last tour as well... as well as the song..its the performance that hits.

    6. If My Heart Were A Ball It Would Roll Uphill - Marillion - Almost for the title alone... but its just a monster of a track.... not prog...not groovy...just Marillion being their usual confounding self...

    7. Vissi D'arte - Maria Callas - From the Opera Tosca - but its this version I love. The voice of tears.

    8. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen - Nostalgia in a video frame!! The first track that turned me onto rock and made me aware that music could astound as well as move me.

Book - easy - The Lord Of The Rings - Tolkien

    Luxury Item - Hammock

    :))))

grooving with the beat box........wah wah wah :)

  • i try....it's very difficult...the first 8 tracks that comes in my mind (sometimes like a 8 tracks selection from my top loved song)... in no particular order (i'd prefered 8 top albums)....

    01. Tomorrow Never Knows - The Beatles
    02. Un Chien d'Espace - Motorpsycho
    03. Little Island- Barbagallo - this is mine, but it's the best song i wrote for me...and it talk about an island, so....
    04. Moonchild - King Crimson
    05. Since I've Been Loving You - Led Zeppelin
    06. Long Gone Day - Long Gone Day
    07. The Diamond Sea - Sonic Youth
    08. My Favourite Things - John Coltrane

Book - The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions - Mark Lewisohn

Luxury - My Redondo Acoustic Guitar

Cool, why do people ask such hard questions? Just eight! I could think of eight hundred and still want to squeeze more in.

    Hmmm...

    Ponders,

OK right now I guess it would have to be the following songs keeping in mind the scenario:

The Isle Of Dreaming - Kate Price
    Cochise - Mike Oldfield
    Gauranga Karuna - Rasa
Send Me An Angel (feat. Kristy Thirsk) - Sleepthief
    Cherdi Kalaa - Snatam Kaur
Even In The Quietest Moments - Supertramp
    Wavelength's Phase - Gota Cola
    Thank You - Led Zeppelin

As for a book: The Secret History of the World and how to get out alive. by Laura Knight-Jadezyk

A luxury item: 6 square metres (6.5 yards) of heavy canvas

I am going to assume that a method of playing the music is provided and it's not just some cruel joke where you can have it but not listen to it.

If I had to save just one I would take Gauranga Karuna

  • Thousands or None

Thought about this for a few hours. Then realised I wouldn't want 8 recorded music items with me on a deserted island. I'd probably be happy with a few thousand tracks or equally with none at all, but a short playlist would be like listening to one of those terrible short-playlist radio stations, I'd be driven mad by the repetition.

  • Oh wow this is going to be tough. I've always balked at making a Top 10 list for myself because it's just so damned difficult and my tastes do change from time to time. However if I had to pick 8 that for me have stood the test of time, then I would have to go with. . .

    1 - infection - 鬼束ちひろ
    2 - BLESSING 祝福 - 平原綾香
    3 - Wind Of Change - Scorpions
    4 - Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own - U2
    5 - Canon - 深田恭子
6 - Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits
    7 - ポロメリア - Cocco
    8 - The River - Garth Brooks

    Honorable Mentions:
Why Can't This Night Go On Forever - Journey
    A Criminal Mind - Gowan
    Långsamt farväl - Lisa Nilsson
    太陽 - 島みやえい子
祈り~You Raise Me Up - 박정현

Edit: GAH! Already had to edit it. How the HELL could I EVER forget Canon?!?

  • 1- Peaches en Regalia - Frank Zappa
2- Thank You Girl - The Beatles
    3- Primavera 0 - Soda Stereo
4- Fuerza Natural - Gustavo Cerati
5- Interstellar Overdrive - Pink Floyd
6-Inca Roads - The Mothers of Invention
7-Not Fade Away - The Rolling Stones
    8- Planet - Kitaro

Well this really is a challenge - I could have chosen another dozen that have moved me in more ways than I can remember so the test will be to create a playlist and loop them for the next week to see if I want to change it. I guess if you really were marooned it might just be enough to know they were there if you did want to play them...

The Flat Earth - Thomas Dolby
Never Be Mine - Kate Bush
    Halo - Depeche Mode
Sonata No.14 in C#m - Ludwig van Beethoven
The Lion In Winter - John Barry
    Trans Europe Express - Kraftwerk
    The Thin Wall - Ultravox
Just don't know what to do with myself - Dusty Springfield

Would probably choose the John Barry for its drama, melody and evocation of escape through the Cinema as the must-have

Book - Brighton Rock by Graham Greene
Luxury Item - A Piano (other than an iPod to play the music on presumably??)

  • 8 tracks...first version, anyway

This was a total challenge! Ok, in no particular order:

    Subterranean Homesick Blues
    It's A Wonderful World
I Think It's Going To Rain Today
    California
    Amazing Grace
    Appalachain Waltz
Have A Little Faith In Me
    American Pie

I would take a book of Rumi poems and my luxury....can I bring a skilled masseuse??? If not, I would take would be more books- lots more.

tomorrow is just another tomorrow so decompose slowly and be happy
  • Well, this was much easier than I thought it would be. I'm usually really indecisive about these things. Ok then:

Aeriths Theme - Nobuo Uematsa - If you've never heard this before, you need to.
Shine on You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd - I can't even describe how beautiful this song is.
Freewill - Rush - Great lyrics, great time signatures, and a great solo.
There's a Star - Ash - I've been listening to these guys since I was about 9 and they remained my favourite band until recently. This is my favourite song from them.
Overture 1928 - Dream Theater - A delicious blend of heavy metal and progressive rock!
Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses - This song is just dripping with emotion.
Glorious - Steve Vai - And that's exactly what this song is, glorious.
Solace - Scott Joplin - It was so hard picking my favourite but I picked Solace: one of the King of Ragtime's greatest masterpieces, and it isn't even a rag!

My book - Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes (the translated version, obviously). Well I need something nice and long. Plus there's a lot I don't understand about this book; I'd have plenty of time to read it thoroughly.

My luxury - Definitely a piano: I don't think I could go that long without practise. Any old upright would do. And if I'm staying on this desert island for more than a few months, let's just pretend it doesn't go out of tune, ok?

As for the song I would save, I'm learning Solace so I don't really need a recording of that. Probably Shine On. I can't imagine myself getting bored of that.

    Snow Dog
    Is victorious!
  • In Random order and subject to change:

This will be difficult as i usually play albums rather than single tracks, but will give it a go.

    U2 - Bad (Live Aid '85 version)
    Radiohead - Creep

Can i cheat? i want to have

Pink FLoyd - The Wall (the whole Album)

I can't do this, i need more Pink Floyd albums....
    Oh Well

Phil Collins - The Roof Is Leaking
Eminem - Stan (but maybe that is because i'm playing it now)
K's Choice - Not An Addict
    Robyn - Dream On

    And

Kylie Minogue - On A Night Like This

    Makes it 8

No rights can be obtained from this list

  • Hmm, that's hard question...

    1. Deep Purple - Highway Star (Made In Japan) - first hard rock track i've heard - any more questions? ;)
