  George Freidrich Handel, born 23rd Feb. 1685 - 324 years ago this month - was to the Georgian era what Elgar was to the Edwardians - the main musical man - the composer with the ability to catch the mood of the people; the one who lifted and inspired, and whose arias were the contemporary top of the pops. Like Elton John, he became a national treasure in his own lunchtime. Musically he was something of a chamelion, drawing on the styles and techniques learnt from his travels, particularly Italy, and cleverly synthesising them into music that is finely balanced with passion, power and delicacy. I am most familiar with his sacred works and some of his oratorios. I think The Messiah is about as good as anything achieved by either Bach or Mozart.
