Beta testing of 1.4

    Stop. Beta time!

    Integrated fingerprinting
Some of you might be aware of the stand-alone Fingerprinter app we released a while back for starting to collect unique track IDs based on audio analysis. This technology is now in the desktop app. Every time you play a track in your local media player, we will check with the server whether we have its fingerprint, and if not, it will be scheduled for fingerprinting in the background. Unfortunately, we have not yet collected enough fingerprints to be able to automatically deduce correct metadata in all cases, but we're confident that after a couple of months in the wild, this version will have collected enough. This will enable us to do lookups of unknown tracks, scrobble tracks without ID3 tags etc for the next version of the app. If you don't want your tracks to be fingerprinted for whatever reason (slow CPU could be one), you can turn this off under Scrobbling in the Options dialog.

Import media libraries from Winamp and WMP
New users can now also bootstrap their profiles with play counts from Winamp and WMP media libraries. To test this, create a new user and uninstall/install the app from scratch. We would be grateful if some of you could try this and report any feedback. For this to work, you need to let the plugins autoupdate to the latest versions on installing the beta.

    MSN Messenger Now Playing notifications
Windows users can now let the Last.fm app send notifications to Messenger about what they're listening to. Big thanks to thoemmi for sending us the patch.

    Diagnostics dialog
The Help menu now allows you to access a Diagnostics dialog. This shows server status, cached tracks, radio streaming buffers etc and should help with support queries from users of the "Why isn't it scrobbling?!?!?!?!!!" kind.

    Better tag dialog
The tag dialog now does auto-completion and is generally a bit smoother to use than before.

    iPod
And what would one of these announcements be without mentioning the iPod. We were planning on adding support for scrobbling from iPods that aren't automatically synced with iTunes in this release but a whole host of last-minute issues has forced us to push this feature to the next release for Windows and Mac. The Linux version does however now support manual iPods and should allow iPod owners using Linux to scrobble for the first time.

    Mac OS X Leopard
The app should now run without any major problems on Leopard, however there might be some lingering issues still so please let us know if you find any.

Various other bug fixes and enhancements
    * Switched to libmad for MP3 playback, fixing the intermittent white noise bug
    * Fix for noisy playback at start of radio tracks on Linux
    * Proxy autodetection on all platforms
    * Option to disable iPod support (i.e. LastFMHelper) added
    * Option to disable systray/menu bar icon
    * Mini avatars of friends and neighbours in sidebar
    * Fixed Remove From Profile in Recently Played
    * Fixed loving/banning/tagging of tracks with & in them from sidebar
    * Fixed language detection on Mac
    * Added more actions to systray menu
    * Old cache items automatically cleared
    * Localisation fixes

    Get the builds here:

    Windows version 1.4.0
    Mac OS X version 1.4.0
    Linux version 1.4.0 (Ubuntu Gutsy)

To install the Mac beta, please remove the old version first.

Please bear in mind, as always, that this is a BETA version and is therefore likely to crash and behave in an unstable manner until we've ironed out the issues. So run at your own risk!

    Thanks for helping out.

  • I like the fingerprinting option ;)
It means that I won't have to waste a night a week to have all my new stuff fingerprinted... it now happens while playing ;)

Remember to say "thank you" for the things you haven't had
  • Wait...not so sweet, it crashes every time I scroll through my friends list, then fails to send the crash report. Am I too popular??

  • closedmouth, what platform is this?

Could I also ask everyone to open up a new thread for each separate issue please?

    [Beta Testing] Pay Back?

    Stopped - Unappreciated time!

Hi Erik - I'd love to contribute, but I've been put off, by way of, not having acknowledgment, let alone feedback, on a number of reports (in the past - over six months ago). I know, for a fact, I'm not the only one disgruntled, in this regard.

If there's been a policy change, in this area, it'd be good to post it, to help some renew/keep the faith. - Best, Ian Audioscrobbler Addicts

  • IanAR, really sorry if we've failed in this regard. There's just too much traffic on the regular forums for us developers to keep up with. This group, however, is easier to keep an eye on due to its smaller number of users.

Would you be so kind as to point me to the feedback and reports you sent back then and I'll make sure it'll get looked at?

We'd really really like to be better at this sort of thing but we're already stretched just getting the basic stuff we're paid to do done and out the door, and sometimes you have to prioritise development time.

can you do me a favour and disable "Download artist image and info" in the settings (connection tab)? does this solve the crash issue by chance (after a restart)?

    thanks,
    chris

Thanks Erik - I'm speaking of this forum and Last.FM Beta's, where our work was zapped *boggles*
Would you be so kind as to point me to the feedback and reports you sent back then and I'll make sure it'll get looked at?
Pls let me know when Last.FM Beta's forum is restored from back-up.

Appreciated - However, IMO, everyone who posts constructively, in these forums, is a 'developer' - what's more, unless sub's're now an insignificant revenue stream, this group's membership is one of Last's paymasters and, I guess, the majority's normal hourly rate is well above minimum wage.

    No offense & faithfully, Ian

Yep, that stopped it from happening.

  • IanAR, I'm afraid I can't personally answer for what happened in the Last.fm beta group, I'm only responsible for the client stuff. But I will forward your comments on to the head of webdev.

Was there any feedback/reports specific to the client that never got acknowledged?

Cool :) Please, in know way take any of this personally. I'm a happy, but once bitten twice shy, bunny.

BTW: Like I keep saying, the name's "Ian" :)

I'm not sue on client stuff. I'll let you know once: I get SQL access, have time to trawl nineteen pages of posts or Google's allowed to look in here - whichever happens soonest ;)

To install the Mac beta, please remove the old version first.

anything special needed to remove the old beta other than trashing it?

  • im gonna try it.. my last.fm 1.3.2 suddenly started putting "Cannot contact Last.fm server" error for some reason, so im gonna try the diagnostic dialog.
Strange.. even in this Beta it cannot connect.. I have my internet configured correctly, as my internet works.. and ii get the same error on my second computer too in Last.fm, but i have checked my friends' profiles and they are scrobbling right now, so this is mysterious.

    I`m bleeding! I die!!

New tag-dialog may be nice but could you add an option to deactivate the filtering and autosuggest. It's consuming a lot of resources for me. (my pc is about five years old)

Mac OS X version on Leopard (10.5.1) is still continuously stealing focus from X11 apps whenever Last.fm is running. Other Leopard problems appear to be fixed.

Everytime I start last.fm it requests my credentials. According to the log it assumes it is starting for the first time:

    071117 22:05:16 - 00001310 - LastFmApplication::init(181) - L3
    First run, launching config wizard

Running on Vista x64, if that matters.
