Make Opera recognize the last.fm protocol in Linux

  • Make Opera recognize the last.fm protocol in Linux

For those who tried to get Opera working with last.fm streams and got an error because Opera won't recognize the last.fm protocol in Linux, here's the solution:

In Opera go to menu Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Programs > Add...

Here in the protocol field just type "lastfm" without the quotes.

For the action select "Open with another application" and search for Amarok (the location may be in /usr or /opt depending on the distro used) or the last.fm player.

Press ok and ok again and voila!

    Enjoy!

  • If you don't know where amarok is located, just write in a terminal: whereis amarok

  • what about firefox? someone knowns how can i do it?

  • Who cares about FireFox?
Opera > any other browser on planet

    Get it and relax ;)

  • I would agree about Opera but it keeps freezing up on myspace.
thats the one and only reason i dont use it.

    N.A.M.

    I loved Opera under Windows.

But under Linux, it's a pain in the butt for me, even more so than Firefox, for these reasons:

    - no sound on Flash videos and no way *that I know of* to fix it like there is with Firefox

    - no Flash version tweak to make browser sniffers think you're using Flash 9.0 like there is for Firefox *that I know of*

If someone knows fixes for these under Opera, I will joyfully and wholeheartedly return to using it. Until then, sorry, but functionality overtakes my preferences on this one.

  • Making lastfm links work with Firefox:

    1. Open about:config in a new tab.
    2. Right click > New > String.
    3. Enter "network.protocol-handler.app.lastfm" as preference name and press OK.
    4. For the string value enter "/opt/kde/bin/amarok".
    5. Restart Firefox.

    NOTE #1:
Don't include the quotes in both cases.

    NOTE #2:
Usually /opt/kde/bin/amarok is where the binary is located, change it according to your setup.

    Firefox all the way. ;)

Well, just try to start Opera with "aoss opera". That works for me, I've got sound in flash videos..

  • I finally got Opera working well. I have sound in flash as well as the kaffeine plugin.

    what exactly does this do?

THANK YOU! I had no idea and was looking for a configuration file similar to the one in Firefox where you change the dsp wrapper from none to aoss, lol.

It changes Opera from using whatever *most probably ALSA* for sound to using OSS, which is what Flash uses. *this is just a guess on my part... I know Flash 7.0 uses OSS and my system default is ALSA*
