I'm not one for fast shredding or pointless acrobatic crap in songs either but for the simple stuff that I enjoy it at the very least has an overall vibe and message, usually some energy, a memorable hook and little things that stand out each time you listen to it.

That Jason Rosenbaum quote's really good too. I never really thought about it but it's very true that indie stands for absolutely nothing. The "friends" I know who are into bands like Modest Mouse are often depressed, confused, lack motivation and I guess that's why this IMO pointless music appeals to them. I just think actual creative music can be that powerful gateway to a strong kinship with another person; I cannot relate to indie music or really anybody who listens to that stuff on a profound existential level.

I can sum up indie music in 4 words: gutless, passionless, contrived and derivative. The reason music can be so cosmic is because it takes you places mentally, puts you in another person's shoes where you often can relate. And makes you focus on many sounds/instruments going on simultaneously. Music's about changes. Just as life, I like it to go in many different directions. Indie music can usually be played by some guy right in front of you with an acoustic guitar, I don't find that very exhilarating.

  • i think i agree with you in the most part...but i don't get wat you said at the end..
playing music on an acoustic guitar might not be "exhilarating" but it can be quite fun and ....enjoyable.

I love acoustic music, I'm saying to see someone perform simply just that can be done by your cousin in the living room. There's not a ton of atmosphere to it like other music. Maybe around a bonfire with some beer but it can hardly compare to the intensity of a whole band in front of you, or an orchestra, etc...
I'd never pay $30 to see some indie singer songwriter guy alone on stage whining.

  • LOL...yea i hear u.. i can't imagine myself doin that either..

  • Why you're retarded.

By criticizing the elitist community that is Indie through an elitist poorly written essay of sorts, you've introduced yourself into the Indie Community. Welcome Friend.

    Love,
    Charles.
