  • Energetic Swing

Good question! You may enjoy Fletcher Henderson or Jimmie Lunceford, or for the earlier sound, Jelly Roll Morton or King Oliver. A lot of their music *jumps*.

  • If you like really hard swinging big band jazz, you'd like the 1932 recordings of Bennie Moten, which I consider as the origin of 'hard' swing. The greatest swinger (i.m.o), however, is Count Basie (who played the piano in Moten's band). Check his big band recordings of say 1938-1941.

Hard swinging, too, are the late thirties/early forties bands by Lionel Hampton, Earl Hines and Cootie Williams. There are also some great sides by trumpeter Roy Eldridge with smaller groups (1935-1940), especially Heckler's Hop.

Later swing is well done by Charlie Barnet, Woody Herman's The Thundering Herd (1945-1947), and you'd probably also like the big band be bop of Dizzy Gillespie's Orchestra (1945-1949).
