well i don't even think that restarter doesn't feel right to us just because it's not "pop" enough. it is in a way. it just feels boring to me. what they release and enjoy playing (i hope they do) is totally up to the guys. they don't have to satisfy our needs and demands after all. still i won't be surprised to feel great amounts of love for their next release.
I've already got a hold of most of Floor's discography, I will go through that shit like a motherfucker pretty soon, that is for sure! "Restarter" left a bad taste in my ears, so now I'm counting on Floor to make up for it. I like the poppier sound of Torche, and they do it just right, so maybe they should stick to it? I'm obviously referring to Harmonicraft, though I also enjoy all of their previous (and heavier) work.
So, I'm halfway through "Oblation" for the very first time and HOLY FUCK!! It totally blows "Restarter" to smithereens! What an album! Fuck "Restarter", I'm skipping that one and pretend that "Oblation" was Torche's latest album.
@thekillingspree, check Floor's most recent lp then. it's feels way better then sadly underwhelming restarter. btw used to say "torchEE" as well, kinda sad that the name is "torch" actually. loved that mexican vibe of the word "torche"
@CloudGer: that's a question that's been haunting me since the days I've started listening to these guys. I always say "torch", anyway (I used to say "torch-ee" at first, but someone mocked me for doing so, so I guess I was saying it wrong).
Coming here made me realize they'll be in my country for a show in a couple of weeks, but not close to (my) home as they've done in the past. It sucks not to be able to go see them live, but I assume they'll be showing off Restarter, so it's not that bad if I miss that particular show.
@Coolbuttflame: (I like your nickname) Fair enough, since I've never listened to Floor, I'll take your word for it. But you said so yourself, it has more of another band's vibe than their own. I still really don't feel like listening to Restarter anymore (and I did give it another try). Oh well, there's always the next album/EP!
@thekillingspree I actually don't think they were trying to get the old sound back. I think Steve has gotten used to be super sludgy from the Floor reunion, which inspired this album. It has a lot more of a Floor vibe than a Torche one, even if they were trying to go back to the self-titled / In Return sound.
@Coolbutlame: it still doesn't sound like their original sound, though, which I'm guessing is what they were aiming for. Restarter still fails on getting me to go back to it, it lacks the sugar rush of Harmonicraft -- which is alright --, but also lacks the overall addictiveness of previous albums. I just don't feel compelled to go listen to it one more time. But I'll try, these guys deserve it. Maybe Restarter is a (slow) grower...
Check out this awesome Q&A they did with Stereogum. Lots of insight about the new album - http://www.stereogum.com/1735277/qa-torche-on-sci-fi-sounds-and-feel-good-metal-restarter-stereogum-premiere/franchises/interview/
