As someone who works in the film/tv business, I find The Books to be absolutely amazing at painting a picture/feeling that perfectly compliments visual creativity. I SO wish they never broke up, because my dream has been to contract them to build a soundtrack/soundscapes for me. There's nothing pretentious or hipster about it. It's also funny to see that Mr. Opinionated is a big fan of Animal Collective, Neutral Milk Hotel, and ARIEL PINKS HAUNTED FUCKING GRAFFITI. Don't get me wrong, I love those bands, but I'd think before labeling something hipster, you douchebag hipster.
Why does this have to be pretentious hipster bullshit? I love the Books because they don't take themselves seriously and make fun music. Yes, you can read into the samples they use, if you want, but I suspect they were mostly making this stuff to have a good time. It's okay to be silly, mr. grumpy pants!
