I just recently heard brownout by Phoenecia and I immediately thought "Richard Devine, now it all makes sense".
It's like RD-lite, the beats are extremely similar and I'm pretty sure after listening to more of them, I 'll be able to listen to more of him.
Not to say that other imitation artists don't have their own sound for themselves. It's a conglomerate of facts that make up the truth. In other words... it's all just IDM! Tetrad and Timach are pretty great. More to come!!
Randale's great, Itsuko's great, The End (Remix) is REALLY great. And it will be great, discovering more works like this, once I go through his 4 other albums, and when I find any more remixes, that I hope mirror all of said songs' qualities. As for the Aphex similarity, I'm tired of that comparison, too, but I think it fits with Devine the most, as far as I know. Many other artists seem to cheaply imitate Twin, except RICHARD Devine :) ... :(.
"Can't people just stop comparing every IDM artist to Aphex Twin or Autechre?" Great point. People don't do it so much in other genres, where similarities are even greater imo. Aphex Twin and Autechre were/are innovators, but there's a lot of other great artists working in a similarly explorative way out there. Richard Devine has got his own special thing going on, and unless you want to be super reductive, it'll give you a different kind of fix to Autechre's music. Great stuff.
