Buffalo, 1989 : c’est sous la houlette du chanteur et guitariste Jonathan Dingus Donahue (ancien membre des Flaming Lips) que se crée Mercury Rev. Le nom pourrait trouver son origine dans celui d’un danseur de ballet russe, d’une courbe de température, ou quoi que ce soit d’autre. Le line-up original inclut alors le batteur et claviériste Jeff Mercel, le bassiste Dave Fridmann (également producteur des mêmes Flaming Lips), et le clarinettiste et guitariste Sean Grasshopper Mackowiak.

  • Snowflake Midnight is better than Yerself Is Steam, not as good as Boces.
  • (IMHO) the new record is shit, which makes me really sad considering it was being hailed as a "return to form". They've always had their cringe-worthy moments, but the second half of the album (e.g. "Sunflower" and the final track with spoken word awfulness) is like the record Polyphonic Spree would be too embarrassed to make. Deserter's Songs is still brilliant.
  • i do prefer the earlier stuff, but too many people claiming that everything post-Baker is tooootally like the worstest shit EVAH, including Deserter's Songs ffs. See You On The Other Side is probably their best album anyway.
