14 juin 2013, 21h52m par fdunihoIn a journal article called Development of my Taste in Music, I am giving a long, meandering autobiographical account of how my taste in music developed. Here I'm going to just highlight the main albums that shaped my tastes, or where I'm not sure what the exact album was, are representative of the direction my taste was taking. To the best of my ability, I will list albums in the order that I first listened to them. For some classical music, I will list a different recording, because the original vinyl is not available on Last.fm, or I just don't remember what it was. This is a work in progress, and gaps may be filled in as time goes on. It is fairly lengthy, but if you're short on time, you can just look over the album covers.
This is not my first recording of Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite, but it is the one I later bought on CD. …

1 juin 2013, 0h02m par breakscapeI am writing this journal because I think a lot of people are curious why I listen to so much Nordic music. I'm going to direct people to this journal whenever they ask why I listen to a lot of Nordic music.
Note: This is pretty long. If you want to read an overview and a possible reason why I prefer Nordic music read the next section.
When I first came to last.fm as a thirteen year old I only listened to three artists. They were Ladytron, Metric and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I really wanted to discover new music. I discovered a lot of new music. One problem I had was that most indie music sounded bland to me. Two artists that stood out to me were both from Sweden. They were The Knife and The Sounds.
I also got into Björk, an artist who I used to think was a bit too weird for me. The person who let me borrow her Björk CD, also introduced me to Metric and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. That made her recommendation more trustworthy. She also recommended PJ Harvey, Ani DiFranco and Jewel. I haven't really gotten into them. I still have some of their songs on my iTunes.
After I got into Björk and The Knife last.fm started to recommend Nordic music. I felt a bit intimidated because back then Nordic music was foreign and new for me. When I got into Icelandic music I discovered a few artists that actually sang in Icelandic. This was new for me. After I listened to a lot of Icelandic music I got interested in learning the Icelandic language. When I was learning Icelandic I also learned about Icelandic culture in general.

1 sept. 2012, 11h49m par emcxmcMy favourite female singers with age and birthday (listed chronologic), place of birth (if known), short description (from Wikipedia) and picture (only included for the deceased ones).
(born before 1940)
† Bessie Smith (born April 15, 1894, Chattanooga, Tennessee, U.S., died September 26, 1937), sometimes referred to as "The Empress of the Blues," was the most popular female blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s. She is often regarded as one of the greatest singers of her era and, along with Louis Armstrong, a major influence on subsequent jazz vocalists.
† Marlene Dietrich (27 December 1901 – 6 May 1992, Berlin, Germany) was a German-born American actress and singer.Although she still made occasional films in the post-war years, Dietrich spent most of the 1950s to the 1970s touring the world as a successful show performer. In 1999 the American Film Institute named Dietrich the ninth greatest female star of all time.
31 jui. 2012, 20h47m par irisvanhoornI stole this concept from MustBeDreaming1, who on his turn stole it from steviesrk.
Take your top 32* artists and pit them against each other in a knock-out style tournament. For each "match", randomly shuffle the artist's tracks and play the first track, that comes up. After you play both artist's tracks, the artist with the track you preferred goes forward, and so on and so forth.
Some other rules about tracks:
1. No track can be played twice
2. No live versions of a track to be played if there are album versions
Here's how my tournament went (artist play rank in brackets):
* I skipped my 29th artist Anneke van Giersbergen & Danny Cavanagh because the only thing they made together was one live album on which they play songs from their own albums and some covers. Instead I added my number 33, which is Nightwish.
1. Mariah Carey (27) VS Tori Amos (1)
