Just a heavy-power-sympho metal, lol, not progressive.
Petrucci - not virtuoso.
Check the true progressive metal. For example. Thy Catafalque, Death, Marty Friedman. Not this overrated shit, metalheads.
DT its just a primitive power metal.
typical structure of DT song
1) Ambient start
2) Power-metal riffs
3) Shit drum solo
4) Shit guitar solo
5) Some more power metal riffs
Where is this PROGRESSIVE ?
Obvious troll. If you're not trolling, you're really missing out on some great music. There's something for everyone in DT's music. Most people simply don't give it enough time or search for the wrong things.
When Portnoy left I thought: "Thats it... goodbye DT" (dunno why)... It was just a feeling. But hell I've been so wrong. The Astonishing is propably one of the best records I know. DT works absolutely fine with Mangini's Drumming.
I think when these guys are making their signature long songs with great instrumental passages they're one of the best bands on the planet. Why they choose to do so many damn ballad-y tracks though, that one eludes me.
Yeah, I really do not care for Six Degrees. The song itself (so the whole second disc) is good and as a standalone release would probably be a 4/5. But I can't stand any of the songs on the first disc for some reason. D:
2 Fav tracks from each album: Killing Hand - Only A Matter Of Time / Under A Glass Moon - Learning To Live / The Mirror - Voices / Burning my Soul - Hell's Kitchen / Home -Beyond This Life / Blind Faith - The Glass Prison / As I Am - This Dying Soul / Never Enough - Panic Attack / Constant Motion - The Ministry Of Lost Souls / The Count Of Tuscany - The Shattered Fortress / Breaking All Illusions - Beneath The Surface / The Looking Glass - Illumination Theory / The Astonishing: All of them :)
I still have this much <3 for them. Btw, The Astonishing is not bad at all! I challenge everyone that dislikes the album to give it ten spins or so. It is an acquired taste for sure and maybe more progressive rock than progressive metal, and maybe their most accomplished musical work to date. I hope they will be even more experimental in the future. The worst thing that could happen would be if they went back and made another "black clouds..." Much love from Sweden.
@RiffmasterRick I actually like both works musically, but lyrically and conceptually I consider them really bland and kind of boring (specially Metropolis), there are far far better concept albums out there to be honest.
