The years have come and gone, and yet for some odd reason I still receive requests for my 'Best Of' journal entries in Heavy Metal, as well as several other genres. Why I still receive these requests I have no idea, but I've relented on being an e-seclusionist curmudgeon and eternally lazy long enough to post my Best in Heavy Metal of 2012 list. I hope whatever poor soul or bored last.fm troll that reads this dated meandering of metal finds something that they haven't otherwise heard or thought to listen to since '12. Unlike the previous journal entry, many if not most of the reviews here are sourced from other writers, webzines, and various publications as noted at the bottom of the review. Also, I encourage any suggestions for albums released in 2012 that I've omitted as it's painfully obvious from my list that I can't possibly listen to everything out there.

Journal entries for 2012 and 2013 are forthcoming. No, for real this time.

26 mars 2013, 13h53m par wrathchild88Well here it is, the top 50 that no-one gives a crap about. Mine. Despite the numberings, it's designed as more of a general upward trend, rather then being 'set in stone' or something because the places will probably change slightly with every listen. Scores range from about 75/100 to 100/100, with a very steep curve up through the 70s up to the mid 80 scores if they were given marks out of 100. I really enjoyed all the albums that made this top 50.
But first, here are some albums that didn't quite make it, along with some EPs, compilations and a live album that I also enjoyed:
Hypnosia rereleased some of their earlier demos under the title “Horror Infernal”. Full of dirty thrashy goodness. There are some different songs to those released on the EP and LP, but also quite a few different versions of songs. If you want to bang your head, this is what you need.
Mekong Delta rerecorded a lot of old songs with the current (seemingly stable!) lineup and released them as “Intersections”. …

29 déc. 2012, 22h50m par rui_santosHere is my list of 2012's favourite albums. The list has 30 albums (full-lenghts and only original material released in this year), ordered from 1º to 30º. Below there's a brief comment about each one.
1º Enslaved - RIITIIR
No, it's not a rule that when Enslaved release a new album they have to be on top of best albums of that year, but what can i do? After a great album like Axioma Ethica Odini, they returned even stronger. RIITIIR has not an immediate impact considering the structure and complexity of the songs. You have to invest emotionally in this album, that's for sure. Once you do it, you'll be immensely rewarded with an amazing musical journey. A song like Roots of the Mountain summarizes perfectly the quality and perfection of RIITIIR. Everything on this album is perfect - the arrangements, the vocals (better than ever), the production and the performance. Album of the year! Well done Enslaved, one more time!
