4 jui. 2008, 18h24m par SpacireleiBefore MOONSPEED, pteranodon, and Bright Channel; Or even Flight Approved Records for that matter, there was a band called Volplane. Formed in Colorado by core musician Jeff Suthers in the mid 90’s, Volplane became a three piece band in 1996 with the inclusion of Shannon Stien on Bass, and Dicky Bosse on drums. Volplane was one of the many early American blissrock bands that were just on the cusp of the new American space rock/noise pop scene, just when the grave of the UK shoegaze was fresh and grassless. That torch had been passed abroad. Joining the ranks of other US artists, from Skywave in the east, to Bethany Curve in the west, Volplane’s flag hit close to the center of America. Their music was filled with sonic imagery, with dark emotional blissful overtones. Sometimes comparible to previous artists like Bailter Space, early Verve, and the Charlatans.
From 1997 to 1999, Volplane spent much of their time attempting to record their debut album for release, along with another EP in the works named Merlot. …

3 mai 2008, 23h34m par davisfordBack around 1997, I guess, I got a promo disc to review. I used to write some stuff for various rags, and got a lot of these discs. Every once in a while you get something really unique and interesting. This particular disc was by a Canadian band called SIANspheric, and the album was There's Always Someplace You'd Rather Be.
10+ years later, I still go back to it. It's a fine piece of ethereal noise pop. I tracked down the rest of their albums. They are all good in their own way, but this is my favorite.
When I read the reviews and comparables for SIANspheric, I find it interesting that the bands mentioned do little for me: Low, Swervedriver, Bethany Curve, Windy & Carl...etc. It's not that I dislike those bands; it is more like I choose never to listen to them because they don't really play anything that interests me...but SIANspheric does.
Who knows why? I try not to care too much, and just let my ears point wherever.
