12 juin 2008, 13h01m par DrAlexHaleIIIHow I got into my top 20.
My first piece of advice before reading this is that, if you don't feel like sitting through almost 20 "Ben Folds got me into ____ because ______" stories, this is probably not the journal for you. I feel it's worth pointing out here that Ben was the first artist I was ever "really" into, so, while he may no longer be right at the top of the list, he's bound to have had an impact of sorts. Secondly, a lot of these stories I only vaguely remember, so don't shout at me or anything.
The strange thing with Guillemots is that they literally WERE the first "band" (by which I mean a real band, not any of the actors in the pop "bands" my sister used to drag me to see) that I ever saw live. I hadn't heard of them at the time, but they were supporting Rufus Wainwright (who, you will note, is sitting way down at #20 on this list) so they were first on. I remember being pretty impressed (though I wouldn't say blown…

the shows at the tour went on got better and better. I think it was probably just a matter of loosening up and getting used to being in front of all these fucking people. New stuff is fantastic. I know I'm pretty biased- but so are all y'all. Cause this is a Folds comm. So you should be a fan if you're reading this. Overall for the tour the sets were short. For Ben shows at least. Ranging in the low 20s instead of SUPERMAN powers of nearly 30 songs that I've seen in my day... these were only my 16, 17, 18, and 19th Folds shows. ONLY. And don't think I would have done all four if it hadn't been for new tunes. Otherwise it would have been; trusted, bastard, you to thank, gone.... etc..... again. but there is new music. which is such a good thing!
Speaking of losing things in Indiana. …

As with my last blog on my Midlake gig the night before, I don't want to drag this one out too much. The surrounding story will eventually be known by the world in my London blog, coming soon-ish to Myspace.
Anyway, I've liked Cake for ages. I discovered them when John McCrea appeared on Ben Folds' "Fred Jones, Part 2" and bought "Pressure Chief" as a result. Loved it. Bought all the rest. Fell in love with CAKE. Couldn't get enough. Wrote short, sharp sentences. Wanted to see them live.
Then my friends, The Old Ceremony, managed to land a few US support slots! Imagine my excitement! Django promised me he'd seduce the band and trick them into playing a show in Birmingham for me. However, literally days before these shows took place, disaster struck and CAKE announced a European tour on their own. Why was this a disaster…

Still, nice overlay of vocals and simple background with the cello/bass keeping up with the piano.
