    Robbie Fulks - Believe: I like to think I can judge a song purely on its merits, but we all have prejudices that can blind us. My particular prejudice is vocoderism. The sound of it makes me go queezy and produces an uncomfortable tingle in my boy-parts (and not the good kind). So I had not given a fair hearing to the original version of this song by Cher. Fulks's version is a more palatable voice and guitar arrangement and, gosh, it's a great song.

    Charley Patton - High Water Everywhere: The sight of Sheffield under several feet of water put me in the mood for some apocolypic flood songs. After a few whirls of Louisiana 1927, I headed off to eMusic and grabbed this slice of growling Delta blues.

    White Stripes - Bone Broke: I was a little disappointed with the album. But the Stripes certainly know how to bash out a straight-ahead rock song.

    Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers - Everybody's Talkin' About Miss Thing: After seeingthe album cover, I was hoping the music would be just as raunchy and sleazy. …

    I write an intensely analytical journal entry charting the Arab-Israeli conflict and it disappears. Those of you who missed it missed a work of literary genius comparable to Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Those of you who did read it - SSSSSSHHH!


    Hell has frozen over, pigs are flying, Patrick Kielty has said something funny and I've found a survey I like. In my arrogance, I had thought I was above surveys and their mindless rote. As it turns out I was just waiting for one puerile enough to appeal to my sense of humour.

    Put your music player of choice on shuffle, and then write down the first 15 songs that come up and at the end of each title add 'in my pants.'
