Dedicated to everybody who feels disgusted by the new Last.fm's policy.
It's great to provide somebody with a new radio. It's cruel and regretful to ask for a gift back.

I d like to suggest to everybody "Grooveshark". It's a really nice site, not that "social" as last.fm but good to listen to free music and discover something new

I thought the purpose of lastfm was discover new music, not pay to discover new music.

but I m not convinced at all by the usefulness of it, and I strongly believe many people already left the site without even struggling in groups like this. This is a loss for the whole social network, a pitty for all those loved old Last.fm. It's true what you say about taxes, State and services but it's also true that new taxes are never welcome, and that many revolutions overbroke after taxation problems =D

Well for those who experienced old Last.fm it's difficult to believe that the site needs money for maintenance, since it has been working long without fees and the increasing number of members assures a much better income from the sponsors. Then of course it's possible to change the site in such a way that you are "legitimized" to ask for money..And here we have an issue concerning priorities: is it better to keep costs as low as possible and go on providing a free service, or investing everything in quality trying to make money from it? This group is dedicated to those who subscribe to the first option. After all I believe that in the international republic of internet many got used to the free access to this kind of good and, as far as pirate services are not fought in a serious way, the only solution to resize their damage to artists and producers is finding another way to provide free music, respecting the laws. I dont question the Last.fm's "right" to charge us

    (2) (There was supposed to be a comma between "no" and "thank" (haha)) The Pirate bay's position is that the the service should be free for the user, and that's great, I use the Pirate bay all the time. But there are also Private Trackers, that charge money, and I'm completely okay with that choice too, because in most cases the majority of that money goes towards site maintenance.

No thank you ;) The truth is I agree with you on almost everything your saying. (But I'm not done :p) The fact that this service breaks down international borders couldn't be more true. I'm now discovering more artists than I can keep with, and most are from the other side of the world. (I think I have one or two Canadian artists in my top lists). But I'm going to still have to play the role of the devil's advocate. The thing that you say this service used to do, well it still does it...only for a fee. You also say that the internet is slowly becoming a new kind of democracy. Again I completely agree. But for many (if not all) democracies to work, they require money. This is true of both the government (taxes) AND the internet (advertising revenue for lets say, The Pirate Bay). For something like the Pirate Bay, which is an indexing service for TONS of information, the service is completely free yet still requires income to operate.

Yep, you re right, another way to avoid discrimination is making everybody pay. Nevertheless What I personally think is that there is a demand of democratic culture. And what I further believe is that Internet is the best candidate to be the vehicle of new Democracy. That's why I also believe that in the huge Net everybody is searching for something free, and Last.fm (as well as Pandora) were looking like a dream coming true. They were really well made services providing a free access to culture. What you needed it was an internet connection and not everybody in the world had internet. But yet it's a widespread international media, growing every year, being interactive, involving more and more people and BREAKING national frontiers. This is Internet, and Last.fm seemed a clever way to save music from Emule and provide at the same time a free access to culture. Right now I feel much more like suggesting alternative ways to listen to free music

    (2) (there are still sites providing Pandora-like services) than suggesting a change of policy to make everybody pay. But this is just my own opinion and I cannot deny that at least a worldwide equal price would prevent from the problem of discrimination. They stay two different problems, the first is summed up in the description of the group and in the name itself, the second is a matter of discrimination and it was written first by me with a post in the "Active Discussion" area, secondly with a shout here, thirdly with the answer to you. Thanx for your comments, greetings from italy!;-)

In furtherance of my point just read the discription for the group: ``Dedicated to everybody who feels disgusted by the new Last.fm's policy. It's great to provide somebody with a new radio. It's cruel and regretful to ask for a gift back.

Alright I spoke, before I knew what I was talking about, perhaps you should make the matter of discrimination (which is a very valid point) more explicit on the front page before others(like myself) jump to conclusions. Now why just Europe? The UK and Germany has free Last.FM, and it's not like all of North America gets it for free either, I`m from Canada and I have to pay, so it affects me too. Personally I don`t think it`s such a big deal, and I`ve only been here for 3 or so months, so I havent experienced the free Last.fm for that long, but I think it`s worth it for the service. Another way to stop the discrimination would be to charge absolutely everyone. This way there would be no discrimination. I think this is why I was confused about what this group was about. It seems that the emphasis is put more on the grudge people seem to have over having to pay for the service.

As I said, it's a matter of discrimination in the access to culture. It could be even 1 buck but why not for everybody. Why not an equal price?Isn't it that this issue with copyright was already known when Pandora closed the service to european users?Isn't it that all those former pandora listeners, or a great part of them made their account in Last.fm?And for long time they kept the service free..what changed in this while? Are we supposed to emigrate to another internet radio or it's time to fight this battle? We re sick and tired of discrimination and especially we re sick and tired of this when it goes among europeans. EU seems to exist for nothing.

Seriously, it's 3 bucks...and if I'm not mistaken it goes towards royalties. Small price to pay for such a great service.
