New Artists/New Music

  • New Artists/New Music

Most of these artists are not first heard on local radio. How are most of you becoming aware of new artists and new music?

Websites? Internet Radio? Word of mouth (then who? and how did they know??) Something else?

    Friends / Music Newspapers

A friend of mine is a DJ. Often he gives me often new things I should listen to.
And here where I live are two or three free music magazines / newspapers distibuted in bars and clubs. They often write about unknown artists.

I was a DJ too for a while at school and mostly we just hunted for "virgin vinyl" - New, never been opened before releases. It could be as surprising and as tediuos as you could imagine...Nowadays we have tools like this - Audioscrobber...Cool...But, someone somehow is the first selector, if you will, and reduces the selection - separating the wheat from the chaff. I think there are realy only about 5 - 10 DJs and artists around the world who check out everything and "make the taste." I spend a lot less time seeking new stuff on purpose anymore, but when I do, there should be a more efficient way even than Audioscrobber or listening to a radio...Both are hit-n-miss. A good DJ gets lotsa free samples and test drives everything...How to get on that list?

we have a good thread about new releases going over in the Chillosophy group.

feel free to check it out. being updated regularly.

as to how...there's a variety of ways:
    1) promo releases sent to station djs
    2) ftp / p2p
    3) music sites
    4) word o mouth
    5) earplug.cc has an interesting newsletter, but it tends to focus on idm and techno releases
    6) listening to net radios

there's not a really good content site for lounge/chill music out there. chilled beats used to be updated regularly, but not anymore, or at least not for some months now. maybe we should start one? :)

I get newsletters from tunes.co.uk and soulseduction.com a local cd-shop (boudisque.nl) I order from, and I listen to somafm.com and louge-radio.ch. But most music I pre-listen in newsgroups (usenet). There is a very good lounge group posting nice lounge music. So there are lots of ways to find out about new music. This will be a good place too I hope.

    Websites

I've found a lot of good stuff by following links to "similar artists" or "customers who bought XXX also bought..." links on websites like Amazon or AllOfMP3.com... If it looks good, I buy a track, and if I like that track I buy more...

  • alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.lounge on usenet :D

  • Some good stuff comes out on Netlabels once in a while.
