    New Streaming Architecture went live!

yoyo, see the last thread for the lowdown. BETA testing was completed there is a few bugs left which we will weed out asap. but it was high time that this thing went online. if features the following:

    • new recommendation system for the radio

    • possibility for any "radio mode" we can think of, now we introduced "similar artists radio", all these radio mode names are to fall with the upcoming redesign.

    • standalone popup player only radio. less buggy (once we got them all).

    • popup player is using the Radio API. which can now be used for all other funky devices as we are our own clients, so we'll make sure it runs.

Like I said we will keep weeding out bugs, please post below if you find any. also, I guess the broadcast players don't work atm. will fix them asap. stay tuned.

We will also give all this new code a facelift asap. we thought it's better it goes online even tho it looks a bit functional, but we couldn't hold it back any longer. have fun!

  • The popup window never loads the artist/album/song information to begin with (and thus never updates). Is this to be expected? Is everyone experiencing this?

  • new stuff looks awesome.
I'm not having any problems with the song info

  • Often it will show something like 59:00/05:00, even after player refresh.

I've had that happen a few times as well and sometimes if the computer goes to screensaver I can see that the popup player hasn't refreshed (to be expected). Neither seem to hamper the stream though. I'm really enjoyin' it.

My stream starts up fine, but my player won't display any information (song, album, album cover, etc.), and my profile page won't display any song titles.

yeah, I had similar issues. it will often start at like 59:50 and go from there. it sometimes doesn't refresh the time, but will refresh the rest of the info. If I press "refresh" it displays the correct time. It's not really a big deal, just a minor bug I guess.

  • Opera Browser and Last.fm

As an old Opera 7. Browser user I was very disappointed when last.fm suddenly didn't worked anymore with my Opera. I wasn't able to start the player. I even had to trick myself into the profile page. only the link the in the right corner works, the same with serveral other links.

Now I updated to Opera 8, Beta version and SURPRISE ! at least the player seems to work as it should. Some links on the page lead to empty pages like before.

So I beg you, don't let the Opera Users alone ! At least in Germany that Broser is quite popular.

The stream is working fine for me. Same problem with song info though, the first song always shows, but then it stops. "Refresh Player" and F5 won't help. Sometimes using the pop-up windows from the audioscrobbler page works though.
All songs show in my profile, which is good. :)

Yeah, if you refresh or click Love/Skip/Ban then it displays the correct time.

    oddball time display

Also seeing the 60:02/02:59 issue, plus unreliable refreshes of the popup player. Firefox 1.0.2 on Fedora Core 3.

  • Popup issues

My popup window works fine for the first song, but even refreshing it, after the initial song does nothing. I have to close the popup and re pop it to get it to refresh.

  • Accessing the popup in Winamp

I've done this by using Open URL in the Winamp Minibrowser and pasting

    http://www.last.fm/player/index.php?giveplaylist=1

It seems to be working just fine, could one of the devs confirm to me this won't cause unnecessary stress on the servers or anything like that?

    Thanks

  • Also unreliable refreh with Opera 8

the popup player also has refreh problems in Opera 8.
if you press refreh within the popup player, time and title are shown correctly.

Is this only for users who have donated? I mean i don't see any new radio modes...

similar artist mode is available for all users on every artist page (top left box -> similar artists)

  • Pop up window failure

The popup window isn't workin for me at all. Music is playing, I have no idea what it is and no ability to ban it.

I've got the same problem; using IE 6.0.2800,1106 at work, I have to close the popup player and restart it to find out what is playing. It won't automatically refresh, and won't refresh using the refresh button. I suspect it is a firewall issue; it's a firewall I don't control, so I just have to live with it. Are you using a different communications protocol or port assignment for the popup player refresh, or is it the standare HTTP port 80?

At home, using Firefox 1.0.3, the popup will automatically refresh if it is the active window. If it is not been on top, using the "Refresh Player" link will usually load the correct information. I do have the 59:00/05:00 problem, though. It will count up to sixty something minutes, then the next thing I know it is back down to fifty something minutes. The song length seems to count up alright, just not the length of time the player has been running.

Also, while the WMP 9 time sync problem was mostly fixed, this new change seems to have broken it somewhat. After a little while, the song being displayed in the popup and the song being played in WMP 9 no longer match up.

  • Record to Profile Check Box

    Last.fm is dope.

For the new popup window, i would suggest a slight gui change. The Record to profile should maybe be a button rather than a little check box.

Check boxs generally require an "apply" button to set the change. It is good that the player doesn't require this, but still a bit against convention.

This could work, but it should display a little "(no longer recording to profile)" in red for a few seconds to make it clear that clicking the box has changed the status of player behind the scenes correctly.

It is great though. keep up the good work.

    rob

ps. i'm on firefox 1.02, and the pop up window is working correctly for me as far as I can tell. no problems with the stream.

    Refresh

Popup never refreshes without closing and restarting it. Had this problem before the upgrade though. Some kind of timeout problem? I'm in the middle of U.S. so 15 hops to get to www.last.fm (about 150 milliseconds right now).
