I just tried playing your artist radio, clicked through about 60 tracks, and I can confirm that your music does not come up on your station.

As mentioned in the other thread, I'm having the same problem with my artist, Suicide Sanctum. I can play my songs from the track pages, but they won't come up on my artist radio, my library radio, or any tag radio. I, too, have played my music repeatedly, tagged the artist page, album page, and the individual tracks. I had a couple of friends do the same from their own accounts. Still nothing. My music does not play on any Last.fm radio.

It seems this problem is not just isolated to new artists. I tried playing Synaesthesia Radio, and I had to click through about 30 tracks before one of their songs finally came up. Synaesthesia is a well-established artist with 36,312 listeners and 317,513 plays.

It seems to me that if someone plays an artist station, that artist should always be the first thing that comes up. That would make logical sense, but I guess Last.fm has their own brand of logic.

Anyway, enough ranting. For now. It would be really nice if someone on the Last.fm staff would look into this problem and tell us what's going on. There seems to be quite a few artists that are having this problem.

  • Still screwed

Moving over from the other topic. It's sad no one is looking into this :\. I was pretty excited to start using Last.FM as a way to demonstrate new tracks before actual release. But, alas, that doesn't seem possible yet.

I got exactly the same problem with those guys...

    http://www.last.fm/music/Onde+Sph%C3%A9rique

Anything I can do that at least our own songs appear on our own radio station?

  • Hello everyone,

The reasoning behind this, is LastFM want us to purchase a Powerplay Campaign, through the Music Manager service. If you do this, while choosing the same artists in your "Similar Artists" radio, to be your targeted artists in your Powerplay Campaign, your tracks certainly will play more often.

If you are like most music artists, trying to be heard and discovered by more fans and the music industry, then you probably cannot afford the Powerplay Campaign? In this case, you certainly can get your music to play more often, but it will take some manual work by you, the music artist.

Here is what our artists have done and it does work, as I have tested this many times:

Create a tag radio, using the name of your artist/band. Then add/tag 45 or more individual tracks, from artists you believe are very similar to your music artist with that same tag title. 100 tracks is actually best. Then get several more people to tag those exact same tracks, with your same name tag, until the tag goes global. This takes one to two weeks, as the LastFM website caches that information, until the site updates once a week, on Sunday nights at midnight, UK time zone. Once the tag is established as a global tag, get as many fans as you can, to play that tag radio, over and over. This will not only refine your "Similar artists" radio on your profile to be more accurate, it will also generate new plays and new fans, as you share this tag with potential new listeners, instead of sharing tracks or music profiles.

You have two choices here - pay for the Powerplay Campaign, if you haven't alot of time on your hands and cannot afford that, or create custom global tags and spend some time generating interest in that custom tag, as a streamable radio station.

Here are some examples, that have worked wonders for our music arftists:

Click this tag and test it please --> tag radio, from the artist World Versus Me
tag radio, from the artist George Ellias
tag radio, from the artist Ellsbeth
tag radio, from the artists Starside Casino

Only two of those examples are artists, I am music publicist for. The other two, I helped them create the tag radios voluntarily. I will help anyone who PMs me a list, of the artists you want to go into your newly created, custom, global tag radio and I will then play/stream the dog doody out of them!

Make sure you send me 15 artists, at the very least, but I suggest you PM me more, for more reliable playability.

Remember this, we need to get many fans to help with tagging and listening to those newly created tags. Also, let me remind you, this will work best if those who help create the tag radio, also play/stream the tag radio - this will be most beneficial, if those creators are also fans of your music and enjoy listening to your genre and style.

    Thank you CrybKeeper!!!

Thank you, CrybKeeper, for your VERY helpful post! I will try the tagging suggestion for Suicide Sanctum. Hopefully it will help. Not sure if I'm ready to dish out any cash on the Powerplay option, but I will definitely do the tags and give it a few more weeks.

  • Thanks Crybkeeper, sounds like a good idea and i might give it a go in the future... BUT..

.. as I stated in an ealier post, I only started having this problem after i had to re-upload every track I had on last.fm, before that I was getting regular plays and listeners (mostly from "....tag" radio).. about 4 a day on average (not a great deal but i was happy with that)

I tagged everything again,,, 73 different tags, I would have thought something would have got played on one of those tag radios over the past 40 days

Also, I know, if anyone wanted to "+add to your library" my music, It still won't play on "your library radio"

"Similar Artist radio" was never really the big issue for me as it never really generated alot of plays for me, understandably because none of us are really well known artists,( I think "similar artist" radio only works well for "big" artists) but obviously tracks arn't showing up on that either...

My previous experience of last.fm has been great before this problem, I know how it usually works and i'm certain something is very very wrong.

Yes, now that I think about it, CrybKeeper's suggestion may not work for us. For those of us who are having this problem, our music does not come up on ANY radio EVER. Not our own artist radios, not any tag radio, library radio, or anything else. The only way my music will play is if you go to the track page for each song and play it from there.

And the most frustrating part of it all is the way Last.fm is completely ignoring us, and there's no way to contact their support team (if they even have one).

Appreciate it Skiye & CrybKeeper, thanks for your help

  • Hello Skiye,

I am currently playing pveits' Similar Artist Radio for his artist Suicide Sanctum. His music is dark ambient, gothic, electronic, eerie vocals, ethereal, which are all styles I enjoy. However, the second song to play was from this folksy, acoustic, country sounding fellow?! POOSA. There is clearly something not right with Similar Artist Radios, being a way to discover music, since most discoveries are made from obscure artists. The more obscure they are, the less likely this SA radio is going to play the style music you are trying to discover, lol. 13 tracks into it and haven't heard any Suicide Sanctum music yet. Similar artist radio is not meant to play the title artist, per say. Let me also mention, I tagged and Loved all of Suicide Sanctums tracks, but did none of that to LastFMs Similar Artists, that ironically continue to be the only tracks playing.....track 14 now and still, no Suicidal joy :(

This is why we need to create a band name, as a custom global tag, as I explained above, and proceed to stream that tag. This will create a radio environment, that WILL play Suicide Sanctum tracks. Usually the first, second or third song will be from the title artist, while ALL the songs playing in the custom tag will definitely be matched as very similar and create the very best way to discover the correct music artists, in the correct genres. I just played my custom tag yesterday and second song to play, was from Ellsbeth. Actually, every time I play those custom band title tags, I always hear the titled artists, within the first few tracks,...always ;-)

The SA Radio will eventually work better, once a music artist has a few hundred thousand track plays, but in this case, you will be hearing 100% mainstream matches, that chances are, you have heard 100's of times on mainstream radio already. So, how is this a way to genuinely discover new music?

Finally, we should create the tags I suggested and then alert our listeners to play that tag, instead of the Similar Artist Radios. I can vouche, they will get a better result and hear the similars, the artist themselves intended.

  • How to: Make the Most of Last.fm

    Upload all Your Music

Uploading as much music as you can to Last.fm is a great idea, and as *all tracks have an equal chance of being played on our streaming radio*, this makes your back catalogue just as important as your current release.

Listen to (and Scrobble) Your Artist’s Music

Making sure your artist is being scrobbled is a good first step towards making an impact on Last.fm. Ask your fans to download the Last.fm software and listen to your artist’s music, and make sure you do the same! Certain features on Last.fm work better when you have reached a certain amount of listeners, so this is important. Yet, this is impossible, since we cannot get our artists to play on LastFMs generated radios. This is another reason, my band title tag concept, will work faster and be more a reliable way to get started. Again, the main reason this claim is no longer valid, is LastFM took away the big three radio services, that were the three major ways to make this work.

Tag Your Artists, Albums and Tracks

**A way of making sure your artists get streamed on the radio and discovered by users is by tagging them**. There are buttons to do this on artist, track and album pages, as well as in the Last.fm players themselves. Tags can be genres, moods, personal notes, anything really! Get as many people, to tag as many things, as possible.

Make Your Songs Available for Free Download

***On Last.fm, your songs will automatically be streamed on the radio and made available for 30-second preview. However, offering tracks for free download can give your artists a real promotional boost. Doing this means that your artist will become more visible and more accessible on Last.fm as we promote free content more vigorously than everything else.***

    * I find this claim a bit questionable, since we all have proven, this does not work on some streaming radios.
** I also find this to be a questionable claim, as it does not work in all streaming radios.
*** I recommend doing this - offer one free track. I also suggest, NOT making all your music free downloads, especially if you are hoping to make a career from your music. One or maybe two free downloads will kick start your artist. Once you have a listener base, fans will share your music around the site and with their friends, who will continue to generate repeat listens.

Still listening to Suicide Sanctum Similar Artist Radio, which is not claimed by staff to be a place where your own music will be heard. However, after 25 tracks have played for me, 5 of them are not even remotely similar. I certainly think, this is an issue.

  • ..can i just point out, the problem is: our music won't play on any radio (similar or tag or library or neighbourhood, etc etc) it's as simple as that.

Yours is a great idea for engineering your own similar artists Crybkeeper, but it's not the answer to this problem.

I know, in your case it is a bit more difficult, as your genre is primarily . If you look that tag up, you will see, a little less than 30,000 members have tagged artists with your tag. This is very small, in comparison with more popular/common tags, which have 100s of 1000s of taggers.

As I have said above, If you create the tag and add all your tracks to it, as well as, what you feel is similar to your music and then play that tag, it will play your music for sure. Then, share that new tag with fans and top listeners, instead of sharing your profile page or your Similar Artist Radio. You are surely going to hear your own music playing in that custom tag.

I suggest adding all your own tracks(tagged as ), plus three to four tracks from 25 other artists. No more, no less. This should give you 100 or so songs that will play for several hours. Each hour, one of your own tracks will play in that tag. I have been doing this for 2 years and I know it will work.

The difficult part, is getting new listeners to play your custom tag. Plus, to make it playable, you need at least two or more people tagging the exact same tracks.

You never did as I requested - send me a PM with a list of the similar music artists, you want in your artist title tag and I will be your second person ;-)

The plays you get are cached on server for one week, so your music profile will be updated once a week, Sunday night, at midnight, U.K. time. Then you will see, I played three of your tracks already this week. You have some nice beats too, but we both can easily admit, just drums are not going to be super popular choice for other listeners. Might I suggest, collaboration with other musicians? You can do this across the web, across the globe, without ever meeting collaborators in person.

Check out this global collab group: Pixies Palace.

Also browse this group, where we all have an understanding for tagging our music: Tag Rescue Project

When you re-uploaded all your tracks, you basically set yourself back to 'un-noticed'. We need to get you a jump start once again and you will soon get those average 4 plays a day back ;-) <---Remember, this was super easy in the past, because LastFM had three major ways to discover, play and force play the correct music. This all dissolved when LastFM and CBS, decided to remove those big three radio functions, i.e. it has become 3 times more difficult to get your own music to play anywhere on the site, without paying for the Powerplay Campaign.

I must say that I REALLY appreciate all the time and effort that CrybKeeper is putting into investigating this problem. I'm still not sure if this will be the solution to our problems, but I am following his suggestions, and I have tagged all of my songs with and I am doing the same with all of the artists and songs that I would like to be associated with. I have a couple of friends who are doing this from their own accounts as well. I'm sure it will take a few days before the new tags register in the system, and then we will know if this solves our problem.

Thanks, CrybKeeper, for all your help. You are infinitely more helpful than anyone on Last.fm staff.

SWEET pveits! I will click that link and tag the exact same tracks as well, then play the tag when it is full ;-) Cannot wait either, because I really dig your music!

ok thanks... so when did last.fm & cbs remove these radio functions? did they make any kind of announcement? would explain alot!

...and would it explain why if I "add artist to my library" it won't actually play any of that artists music in my library radio?

  • holy shit, i got a listener!

    ...from "drum&bass" tag radio!

could things be getting back to normal?

    i hope so.

  • Yes, they did announce it on November 17th of last year: http://www.last.fm/forum/21717/_/657999/1

so youre talking about the "loved track / personal tag / and playlist" radio(s)?
I'm not sure why that should make such a difference...
..or did i miss something else?

(excuse me if i seem a little slow, i'm just trying to make sense of it all!)

I was uploading tracks (one by one) before and after the 17th Nov and all was fine, (but i see what you mean, how it went back to being un-noticed when ALL my tracks got deleted)

...i'm still lost, but as i say things have started to show up on "drum&bass" tag radio again, hopefully it's just been a matter of waiting a while.

and thanks very much for taking the time to help us out with this CrybKeeper, I might not sound like it at times but it's greatly appreciated...

anyway my couple of radio plays for today will shut me up for a while, but i'll keep you posted, cheers.

  • UPDATE:

For some reason, the tag radio is intentionally skipping the title artist. It even plays the same songs twice in a row! Which as I understand violates LastFMs music license? I have played this new tag radio for hours on end, all day long and it has played all the songs in the tag, EXCEPT the 8 tracks in it, by Suicide Sanctum >:( 68 tracks in all, from 20 music artists.

This may be, due to the tag is still in server cache and not global yet. However, just one artist not playing, when it is the artist I prefer to play, seems awfully suspicious.

I will keep trying to play this tag through the weekend and see if it ever works correctly.

Now you see why I'm getting so frustrated with this! Perhaps as you say it's just a matter of waiting until the tag goes global. So if the update happens on Sunday, then I guess we should know by Monday or so. I've updated all the artist tags so I have an average of 4 tracks by each of my favorite artists and similar bands. And I also had 2 of my friends tag the exact same tracks using their accounts. Hopefully this will work once last.fm processes the new tags.

CrybKeeper, could you tell me what url you're using to play the tag station? I can't get it to play at all, but I might not be doing it right.

EDIT: Okay, I see now. Other tag stations have a PLAY button, but mine doesn't have it yet.

  • Crybkeeper if you could admit that our stuff isn't (or wasn't in my case,, but i don't think i'm out of the woods yet) showing up on the radio maybe someone from last.fm will take this issue seriously and look into it

Your update pretty much confirms what we've been saying all along, and it is frustrating..

I don't believe in the powerplay conspiracy theory or that it has all of a sudden become so hard to get a play on the last.fm radio

I feel like i've done all i can do now ,looking forward to hearing from some last.fm staff. (again, no offence and thanks for your help)

  • No offense taken ;-)

Yes, now I do see why you fellas are so upset. I am playing the tag radio again today and still,...no Suicide Sanctum tracks playing, in custom tag radio :O

Until a tag goes global, there will not be a play tag radio button available. However, you can still play it immediately, by installing and playing the music through the LastFM Desktop Client, which is 10 times more reliable and consistant, when compared to the web page Flash Radios. The Desktop Client is basically a stream player, like WMP, WinAmp or FOOBAR, but exclusive to LastFM and can play while hidden in the system tray. You can download that here: Download LastFM Scrobbler.

LastFM have over 12 million songs to update, so although it starts uploading cached statistics and data on Sunday night, midnight, this can take a couple days to complete. Some weeks, our artists stats update almost immediately, while other weeks, we don't see the results until Tuesday, lol. With Global radio tags this may take as much as two weeks, before going global, while other times it happens faster.

As you both have said, LastFM staff may be able to elaborate on all of this, as they come back in office on Monday, UK time.

Skiye, the support link is useless. The message on the page says:

"Unfortunately we cannot provide email support for any issues other than account/password and subscription problems or abuse reports at this time.
