How's the Gay Marriage situation in your country?

  • How's the Gay Marriage situation in your country?

I live in Portugal and it's going to be one year now since our government approved gay marriage.

How's the situation in your countries, and how do you see it?

  • We have civil partnerships for gay people, and I couldn't give a fuck whether or not they get marriage. They are basically identical to marriage, but without the religious element (I think, not totally sure).

As a heavy Catholic country, it's still outlawed. I actually support it.

Oh, shed a tear for the loss of innocence, for the forsaken spirits who aches... in us. Cry for the heart who surrenders to pain, for the solitude of those left behind!

  • Gay marriage is legal here in Holland and I think that's fine. I seriously can't think of a reason why two people of the same sex who like each other should not have the right to marry each other. Nobody gets hurt, it's not bad for the economy and no natural disasters will take place if they do.

  • It's on its way to getting approved...sucks...

I disapprove, and I'm not arguing the matter because it cannot be done in anything resembling a civil manner.

Why do you think the arguing can't be done in a civil manner? I'm interested in hearing your arguments against gay marriage.

Ok. It's fine that you are a christian, and you've got the right to be personal against gay marriage. But just like Anca10 said, don't you think gay people deserve, and want the same rights to be what they want to be? Live and let live, as long as nobody gets hurt?

  • well, my dear sir, I live in Romania ( yeah, we do have gay people ) but we still have communism in our blood because we are leaded by people who were born and raised in that period ( I was born at the end of it, so Thank God I wasn't raised in by Ceausescu )
we do have a lot of old people who don't tolerate gay persons, and they treat them very bad. Also the church here has an important thing to say in people's decision, and as you know the Cristen Orthodox church doesn't agree with gay people either ( well, it doesn't agree with a lot of things, but I honestly don't care ). So basically, it's impossible to get married here as long as you are gay.
Me, personally, I have nothing against them, I understand that it's just another way of loving a human being, and if they like to celebrate that by getting married then that's just fine ( I do have some gay friends also) but in Romania, that's just impossible... for now...

Literally speaking it only refers to homosexuality in men. The bible states nothing about homosexuality in women.

It also says that if a man marries a woman and finds out she isn't a virgin he has no choice but to take her to the door step of her father and stone her to death there. That would make for a pretty stupid law.

My country was actually one of the first who allowed gay marriage.

  • I'm planning a move to Saudi Arabia. Apparently it is a gay paradise there.

  • Its a mess. I dont see why not. Let them pay marriage taxes just like anyone else.

  • As a sensible, free-thinking atheist I believe that gay people should be allowed to marry without question, but also wonder WHY on earth you'd want to play by the rules of the church (blanket term used, as is assumption that they don't want a bar of homosexuality)

as a heterosexual I don't want a bar of marriage. I can see why it's needed to an extent to claim life insurance and such... but shouldn't we be changing the fact that some archaic church tradition has tied up our legal system instead? not to try and take away from the fact that the whole point of denying gay marriage is deprivation of liberty, but it's really only one of the injustices the church has brought into our society. allowing gay marriage shouldn't be the aim, but rather dissolving christian institutions. that attacks the problem at its root, rather than just making exceptions.

Yep, it's 100% my fault that I make the statement, "I'm a Christian, and the Bible speaks out against it," then people go on a bitchfest of how wrong Christianity is.

You're the most absolutely perfect person ever...it's all the fault of Christians for being so widely and vehemently persecuted in mainstream osciety.

Umm...no, that's not the way I think it should work. My religion states that allowing sin to fester in the world without taking a stand is wrong. So when I see my country trying to approve something I find immoral, I'm going to say something. I'm not saying we need to stone them or incarcerate them or banish them from society. I'm saying that they are doing something immoral, and trying to approve a church-ordained practice involving that sin is wrong.

So, I'll MAYBE open my mind to gay marriage when I stop getting told it's wrong to teach Christianity and general Creationism in public schools.

Actually, I won't. It's pretty well-stated in the Bible that homosexuality is a sin, so I'd be lying to say that I would compromise on my faith. But it's crazy when people go on how the rights of gays are being restricted while trying to tighten restrictions on Christianity.

Is persecution really that bad for a group that is one of the biggest majorities in society?

I get the continued impression that certain christians harbor some sort of "I'm against the man" complex without realizing when they are the man. For instance it seems like every christmas we hear so much about how "xmas" and "happy holidays" is a part of some giant anti-christian crusade even in the face of evidence that both terms originated in christianity itself.

To be fair I don't mean everyone. That's why I said "certain christians." But it is something that genuinely intrigues me.

    Incorrect.

Romans 1:25-27 - "They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. "

Now it does not specifically say, "women slept with women, and it was bad," but the context and wording of it is pretty clear that homosexuality as a whole was going on, and that it was wrong.

The bible in no way should influence any laws. That's fine if people think that it's wrong, but it's disgustingly retarded when people think the bible should be used in making laws.
