Grooveshark Vs Last.FM

  • With me it goes like this: I find a new artist on Last.fm (or somewhere else), I go and look at his most played tracks, I listen to them on GrooveShark (or somewhere else), I download/buy em if I like em.

    wtf is grooveshark LOL

  • Though i like the desktop application Groovewalrus, the best solution of scrobbling tracks played in grooveshark to last.fm is through a small tray application. Can be found here
    http://rumpus.altervista.org/

Imeem bit the dust. Profits were not there and company was about to go bankrupt, so My Space stepped in and saved a bunch of their data. Anyways, the rumor is 'My Spaced Killed Imeem', but that is not at all the truth. 'My Space Rescued' the music and saved them from the inevitable shut down and entire loss of the material.

I've never heard of this Grooveshark thing... IMEEM was cool and it sucks that it's gone, all myspace saved of it was a few playlists and I lost all my uploads.

    Grooveshark = illegal

Last.FM = legal, wonderful community, recommendations, scrobbling, should I continue?

    Grooveshark is NOT illegal.

    both unfortunately

With me it goes like this: I find a new artist on Last.fm (or somewhere else), I go and look at his most played tracks, I listen to them on GrooveShark (or somewhere else), I download/buy em if I like em.

Similar here. lastfm has more music and all the descriptions and write-up, but GS lets you play more music. You can quickly load whole albums and select songs to play straight through. Select songs on lastfm, and you have to step back a couple clicks and select the next song. Use GS, if you don't want to babysit a software to hear an album or select a few songs? Use lastfm to show you music that sounds like "___________", and check out the new discoveries in GS. Wish one service could get it all covered and keep it that way.

GS claims they are legal. If they die, please post the next incarnation here. I went through Mercora and Deezer (Can't remember a third one). Seems like lastfm had a brief window in time when you could listen to what you want without clicking every which way between every song.

If you play "radio" of an iconic artist like John Coltrane in Lastfm, you get a continuous review of large catalogs of music (no babysitting needed). Some artists influenced so many, and even recorded with many different artists.

    heh.

Grooveshark = legal, faceless community (from what I can tell from about 5 minutes on it), recommendations, scrobbling, should I continue?

Either way, there is no "vs" for me - I use the two in conjunction with one another - never used last.fm for recommendations, only scrobbling, and I like Grooveshark's recommendation system better, if I were ever to use it more.

And now that the bridge has been crossed for scrobbling on last.fm and Grooveshark, my life, in terms of music, is pretty much complete.

  • Grooveshark is wonderful in many ways ,and there is a lot of problems with Last.fm.But i listen to music here on Last.fm most of the time. i guess it because i like problems, like all the other users here. I cant really see any other reason for being here.

This is my world. You just living in it.
  • Grooveshark doesn't have a forum, therefore Last.fm is superior.

it,s true that Grooveshark doesn't have a forum, but besides that is Grooveshark fare better than Last.fm.

GS forums Why don't they work?

    I just found this:
    http://forums.grooveshark.com/categories

    Then:
    https://www.grooveshark.com/login
Not Found The requested URL /login was not found on this server.

Why is GS not maintaining their own forums?

  • Grooveshark

+Bigger database, definitely more rarer stuff to be found.
    - Slow, haven't even been able to play one song without it buffering loads of times!

    Last FM

+ Easier to find similar artists and info on them.
    + Multi tag radio.
    + Faster Music Access.
    - Can't find the rarer stuff.

Overall I prefer Last FM, quicker access no buffering, extra artist info and similar artists search. If I can't listen to something here, I try grooveshark and hope I can listen without too much buffering. But usually I get fed up and come back here.

  • I don't really get how it works, seeing as anyone can upload music. Seems like it's kinda illegal ...

  • I prefer Grooveshark when I want to play a specific song or album. When I want an easy radio station based on what I like, I come to Last.fm

Of course, there's still Pandora for discovering completely new music.
