Last.FM through Squeezebox

  • Last.FM through Squeezebox

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but does anyone know how to get Last.FM streams to play through Squeezebox?

I've tried cutting and pasting the URL from Winamp to the Internet Radio box in the SlimServer browser, but that doesn't work. Any ideas anyone?

  • Sorted it now. Ignore this thread. Thanks.

Just out of interest, how did you make it work? Did you have to do anything unusual?

  • Cool new application for SqueezeBox—a Sonos killer

I just setup a Pluto Home system (smarthome + media server). It’s really cool and works great with SqueezeBoxes. Just plug the squeeze box into an Ethernet jack. When it sees the squeezebox request an IP address it automatically installs the slimserver and sets everything up on its own. There’s no software to install at all. And if you have a Bluetooth mobile phone, that turns into the remote control—complete with cover art, access to playlists, etc. Plus, it knows how to control all the other stuff too—so when I start playing music on my squeeze box it automatically turns on the stereo and sets it to the right input.

There’s only 1 problem… They have these interactive maps so I can see what’s playing around the house and make the same thing play in multiple destinations. If all the destinations are squeezeboxes, it’s great. But if some are squeezeboxes and some are media PC’s, Pluto uses slimserver to go to the squeeze boxes, and videolan to stream to the PC’s—and the 2 ‘groups’ are not in sync. They say it’s because the only slimp3 player that emulates squeezebox2 and runs under Linux requires Java. Pluto sends a network boot image to all the media pc’s in the house—that’s how it turns your other PC’s into set top boxes. They don’t want to add the whole java runtime to the net boot image and bloat it just to get a slimp3 player. There are 2 open source C++ slimp3 players that are small and lean, but they are old and don’t support the new protocols.

So, is anybody out there working on a C++ squeezebox2 player? This is the only small piece that’s missing. With that piece this would be a total sonos killer. You would still have a cool GUI with cover art. But it’s even better than Sonos’ because it uses your existing mobile phone—one less thing to lose—and your music follows you automatically as you move throughout the house. Plus it does movies—not just music. And controls a/v equipment and home automation too. And costs 1/10 the price.

  • There is a plugin available to play LastFM through Squeezeboxes
(which I wrote). I've fixed it to work with the latest LastFM changes.

    download it from www.jamescraig.co.uk/SlimServer

  • I've installed the slim plugin and everything I play through Slim appears in my profile, but how do you do it the other way round?

I can't see how I play last.fm radio through the slim player?

    Thanks

    Alex

  • I installed both Slimscrobbler and James' excellent plugin to play last.fm through the slim player, and both were working for a while and are great!

However, although my slimscrobbler plugin is still working and submitting my tracks played, james' plug in has stopped working.

Anyone any idea why? Have last.fm made a change that stops it working, or has something broken at my end? It just stops as soon as I attempt to start playing last.fm?

    Thanks,

    Alex

  • Any luck Alex?

I've made a lot of improvements to the Squeezebox plugin in the last week that people might want to check out, although the older versions should still work.

  • Excellent, i've being playing Music on my pc using WMP, i bought a sqeezebox yesterday so i can listen when i'm not on my pc - didn't realise there was a last fm plug-in, all i need to do now is fathom out why i can't connect my squeezebox to my wireless network (zonelab/wanadoo livebox issues, plus my lack of pc knowhow).

  • Right i'm connected and listening to my music through my squeezebox, i now need a plug-in to add my tracks to here.

Is it possible to run two last fm plug ins one for wmp and one for squeezebox or is that not do-able?

I also think i need to re-tag my mp3's on the actual files as before they were only re-tagged in WMP.

  • Argh, now i've finally sorted things out and i'm raring to go i now understand this plug in doesn't display the tracks i've played on my squeezebox on last fm, lol/oops i really should read things properly.

  • Hehe, i've sorted everything i think, although i've just had to "submit my tracks by pressing play" before my tracks showed up in my last fm profile.

Hope i don't have to do that everytime i switch on.

  • I'm a bit lost here, to be honest!

I'm about to buy a SqueezeBox too, but like others I really would like the tracks I play from my collection to be scrobbled to my Last.fm profile, as I play them. I understand that if I play Last.fm radio this would be the case, but maybe not for my own mp3s.

Is this possible with the aid of a plug in? If so, where can I get hold of a copy?

My email to Last.fm support has not been answered from 2 weeks ago :(

  • squeezebox user

Hey, to use the squeezebox for your own music collection you need to run slimserver 6.5 therefor there are severeal plugins to scrobble. but with the new software (slimmserver7.0beta) got a new name squeezecenter 7.0 the plugin is alreaddy intergrated by the software. so you only need to fill in yor name and pass. and it scrobbles the music. there are also plugins to listen to LAST.FM just google and you wil find out.

    peace.

  • How did you do it?

    We all want to know.

  • I have now spent countless hours trying to get last.fm via squeezebox to work. I am giving up now. At some point it seemed like it almost worked through squeezecenter (on a mac) but when using Squeezenetwork I have never been able to find lastfm.

  • Just for info, I just tried the latest SqueezeScrobbler plugin for SqueezeCenter 7 (from http://slimscrobbler.sourceforge.net/), and all I had to do was copy the plugin to the plugin folder, and add a station via the SqueezeScrobbler plugin options in SqueezeCenter. Then it just becomes available under Internet Radio on the Squeezebox.

Only thing is I can't see my own radio station, only my neighbourhood and recommended. Though my own radio station would be nothing more than a reflection of my own library on my server at present, but the more I play other people's music the more that will change.

Seems similar though with my friends and neighbour. Can only see their neighbours and recommended, not their own libraries.

I've not used last.fm for playing music via the station streams, just for scrobbling really, as I didn't really "get" the point, but now I kind of do when all my neighbour and friend's radios along with recommendations become just another Internet Radio station on my Squeezebox :-)

    Not working...

I just copied squeezescrobbler to C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter\server\Plugins, configured the plugin using the squeezecenter but... I don't see anything mentioning last.fm or squeezescrobbler on my squeezebox? How can I select last.fm as my radio station? Where is it?

  • Fantastic!

  • soundbridge und squeezescrobbler

funktioniert nicht für mich - bin in Deutschland - liegt wohl daran, dass die Soundbridge nur eine Squeezebox v1 simuliert

  • and whenever using a NAS?

with pre-installed Squeezecenter (such as NetgearDuo), how to insert the radio plugin?

  • custom playlists?

anyone know how to stream a custom playlist?, not loved tracks, or recommended, but a playlist you created, called Metal for instance?

  • Last.fm radio on Squeezebox Server 3.5 !?

    Squeezebox Server 3.5 comes with 2 pre-installed last.fm plugins: a last.fm scrobbler, version 1.0, and a last.fm radio 1.0.
The scrobbler works, but the radio does not (in The Netherlands, that is).

To get last.fm radio, one can try the following:
    1. Disable both pre-installed last.fm 1.0 plugins
    2. Download SqueezeScrobbler 1.2.8 from slimscrobbler.sourceforge.net
    3. Place the full SqueezeScrobbler directory in C:\Program Files\Squeezebox\server\Plugins
    4. Restart Squeezebox Server
    5. Configure the plugin settings (including favourite stations!)

Now Last.fm appears in your Main Menu under Internet Radio, and you can select stations, and a track is displayed, but no audio is streamed to the clients...

SqueezeScrobbler 1.2.8 was designed for Squeezebox 3.4.
It seems it has to be updated to work with Squeezebox 3.5.
