Mac iTunes/iPhone Scrobbling not working.

  • Mac iTunes/iPhone Scrobbling not working.

So many threads on here don't specify which OS they are using, and replies/help seem to assume Windows platform only. Hopefully the title of this post will help bring out some MAC users who might be able to help.

First off, I like Last.fm, but when automatic Scrobbling via iTunes automatic sync of my iPhone stopped working several months ago (June 2009) I tried fixing it, but soon gave up. I had mostly forgotten about last.fm, but when I got a new iPhone and plugged it in to set it up, suddenly the last.fm scrobbler popped up with a list of recently listened to tracks! Alas, that didn't last, once I'd copied all my music to the new device and listened to a few tracks, scrobbling once again failed to do anything but frustrate. "Preparing iPod for Scrobbling." "Last.fm is now ready for iPod Scrobbling." "No scrobbles were found on your iPod." nothing, nada, zip.

I've followed all the steps in this years old troubleshooting guide (http://www.last.fm/forum/34905/_/168488) to no avail. If I listen to a track via iTunes, the Last.fm client sees that track as playing and scrobbles it. If I listen to a track on my iPhone and then sync, the play count is incremented in my iTunes library but the track is not scrobbled. So I can obviously connect to last.fm, and play counts are being updated in my iTunes library, but plays on my iPhone are not scrobbled. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Last.fm and iTunes applications. There is no "media plugin" anywhere in the MAC last.fm scrobbler application (that I can find.)

    • What operating system exactly are you using? MAC 10.6.5
    • What version of the Last.fm Scrobbler do you have installed? (Lookup: In the Scrobbler under Help > About Last.fm...) 1.5.4.27088
    • What media player are you using, and what version exactly? iTunes version 10.1.1 (4)
    • What's the version of the media player plugin that you have installed? (Lookup: In the scrobbler under Help > About Last.fm...) NONE (Last.fm > About last.fm says nothing about any plugins on MAC)
    • What's the iPod model you are requesting support for? (you can determine your iPod model from here) iPhone 4 w/ iOS 4.2.1
    • Do you syncronise your iPod with iTunes manually or automatically? automatically

    Thank you for any assistance.

  • yep

    same for me

    Another iPod fail.

Plays done directly in iTunes scrobble (thus my account and the scrobbler are working fine)
Plays on my automatically-synced iPhone 2g scrobble after it has syncronized with iTunes
Plays on my iPod almost never scrobble anymore... The usual dock, mount, "Preparing iPod for Scrobbling." "Last.fm is now ready for iPod Scrobbling." "No scrobbles were found on your iPod." sequence.
I've taken to just re-playing all the tracks in the "Recently Played" list when I have the patience and can remember to... what a f$king crock.

What operating system exactly are you using? MAC 10.6.5
What version of the Last.fm Scrobbler do you have installed? 1.5.4.27088
What media player are you using, and what version exactly? iTunes version 10.1.1 (4)
What's the version of the media player plugin that you have installed? AudioScrobbler.bundle-221110 (found in ~/library/itunes/plugins)
What's the iPod model you are requesting support for? iPod Photo (ya!)
Do you syncronise your iPod with iTunes manually or automatically? manually

Used to use the heartbreakingly-finicky iScrobbler but it stopped working at all a while ago. Tried swapping the plugin bundle a few times... Tried (unsuccessfully) to set up and run the java Lastpod...

  • Hi,
im also having the same notification when i connect my Iphone 4 with Itunes: "Last.fm is now ready for iPod Scrobbling."
    But nothing happens afterwards..
I use Windows, and i downloaded the most recent version off Itunes scrobbler..

will it be possible to fix this?

  • Same here!

The problem seems to be that under preferences/ipod, my iphone is detected, but there is no user attached to it!

  • My Ipod stopped scrobbling around christmas. Crazily the only time it actually worked since then is today when I turned scrobbling off! Only seems to have worked the once though and is now back to paying me no attention. Tried turning it back on again but no luck despite all the usual "ready for scrobbling messages"

  • howdy,
same prob here. manual sync. used to work sporadically, but since a few weeks now it doesn't work anymore. also no user in the linked ipod in last.fm scobbler

  • kinda fixed it for now. thats what I did:

    last.fm scobbler:
added my useraccount again: Account->add User...
    last.fm scobbler Preferences:

    scobbling:
ticked "Allow Last.fm to fingerprint your tracks"
    iPod:
ticked "Give more feedback" (the other two where already selected)
removed the device association without user

closed scobbler & itunes (dock-> right click -> quit).
    waited to let them shutdown.
    opened itunes (scobbler starts automatically)
    finds iPhone...
closed itunes again via dock. (not sure if needed)
opened it again. synced iphone. got my plays from the phone from today! ;)

    CU

  • yep definitely fixed for me. user is linked to the phone and worked already 4 times in a row now. ;)

^thanks for that, something definitely happened, although it's still not pulling my plays off the iPod from when it wasn't connected to my computer (ie plays when I was out and about today). I manually manage my iPod (ie music is not in iTunes library), should that make a difference?

OK so it worked except it said "no scrobbles were found on your iPod" even though I've listened to 200+ songs between the last time it worked (yesterday morning at work) and just now. So those are lost, eh? Will it start working from now on?

YES! It works now, just like it should. THANKS SO MUCH!

But what a right pain in the bloody ARSE that you have to go through all this shit just to make it work properly...unacceptable!

  • still doubfull

@luckt_mr, i did what you wrote, so i will let the scrobbler work out the data, cause it doesnt show up immediately, so i'll give it some time.

@DRBlur, well if it works it works,, we just have to love these forums right.

  • Followed lucky_mr's instructions above but it still isn't working. Last.fm seems to pick up stuff I listen to through iTunes but nothing through my iPod or iPhone. I've lost hundreds of plays in the past couple of weeks and am not happy.

What has been most frustrating is the utterly dismal communications from Last.fm Support on all these problems over the past month. I have been evangelical with my support for Last.fm over the years but am changing my opinion FAST.

Spoke too soon, now I just got the "no scrobbles found on your iPod" message even though it's been over 100 plays since the last time my iPod was plugged in...argh!

Yup, I went through and did all the steps again, and am getting the "no scrobbles" message even when I disconnect and play a few songs and then reconnect...WTF? SO AGGRAVATING!!!!

  • Glad I'm not the only freaking one >.< GR!

  • glad I could help a bit.
yeah this sucks BIG time. It is working now intermittently for me. yesterday the last.fm scobbler crashed and now new scobbles were found.

closed the scobbler and itunes reconnected the iphone and it found three scobbles (2 from this morning, 1 from just now, several from during the day missing)... a few is better than no scobbles, but still disappointing.

BTW I am also using manual syncing of music. So I have to hit the Sync button in iTunes to get the scobbler to find some plays...

if you look at the release notes of the scobbler, they are apparently preparing a major upgrade, hopefully they fix the bugs then...

    http://cdn.last.fm/client/ChangeLog.txt
    * More iTunes fixes - hopefully stop any crashing
    * Some prep for a new major version update

^same here, it didn't work yesterday, today it is. Frustrating. Glad to see an upgrade is coming, though!

  • Lol

Funny isnt it that we are so into the scrobbling that it annoys us that what we listen to isnt scrobbled.
One might ask do we listen for the music or the scrobbling?! :)

  • for me it's the music. but I like the statistics last.fm is capable of and without my iphone scobbles many plays are missing.

BTW it seems that it is now stable for me. had now 5 successful syncs in a row.

Exactly. It's ALWAYS about the music, but the stats are super cool.

I've had three successful scrobbles upon plugging the iPod in, so I think (hope) I'm all set now!

  • Still lots of us having this problem, however. Check out this thread for more unhappy punters: http://www.last.fm/forum/34905/_/655749/1

  • Same problem here

The most important thing for last.fm to make sure happens is the iTunes always "scrobbles" (or should it be "sync") recently played data to last.fm. It is irrelevant if the song has been played on the iPhone/iPod or iTunes with last.fm closed. It should simply always sync your iTunes data to last.fm. So you don't have to worry if your iPod data is scrobbled or not because it simply will be everytime you have synched with iTunes!

Getting fed up of this not working....what third party applications are there for iTunes to do this?
