iPod Scrobbling issue - very strange

  • iPod Scrobbling issue - very strange

This never used to happen, but started occurring yesterday and is bothering me a bit...

When I listen to music in iTunes with the last.fm software in the background, it seems to scrobble as usual. But if I have my iPod plugged in as I'm playing music in iTunes, when I dismount the iPod drive the last.fm software pops up asking me if I want to scrobble tracks.

First of all, it's usually just two or three random tracks. Secondly, they are always tracks I played in iTunes - not on the iPod.

It's usually a few hours after I've played the songs so I'm not sure if they're actually getting scrobbled the first time or not. Since it always pops up about three random songs that I played in iTunes earlier in the day, I get the impression it isn't being double scrobbled - but, in fact, the iPod is somehow taking "credit" for what I'm playing on my computer.

Still not sure why it only asks to scrobble them after I eject the iPod, though. And to be frank it's kind of annoying getting a popup box every time - especially since I'm not sure whether I should scrobble the plays or not because I'm not sure whether they went through the first time.

My iPod is brand new (bought it two weeks ago) but it wasn't doing this as early as a few days ago and my old 4th Gen iPod which I used for two years to sync with last.fm never received these problems.

I'm not sure whether it's a bug on last.fm's end (in the software) or a problem with my iPod. I'm leaning towards it being a last.fm bug (I hope so!) so I figured I'd post here and see if anyone else is getting the same problems as I am.

  • Another weird thing I just noticed - and I'm not sure if this is just coincidence or not - but my "Recently Played Tracks" wasn't updating for the past two hours as I've been listening to music on my computer. I had my iPod unattached the whole time. Ten minutes ago I plugged in my iPod to sync a new album, and when I disconnected it again it popped up the "Do you want to scrobble these tracks?" box again (as discussed in my first post) but I noticed immediately after I plugged in the iPod, synced it, and unplugged it again - all my tracks played on my computer in the last two hours showed up under my last.fm page's "Recently Played Tracks." I wasn't sure whether this was related to the iPod issue I'm having or if it was just a freak coincidence. (In which case I assume the last.fm database just wasn't updating in "real time" because of a technical problem on the site's end.)

  • Yes, sometimes user page is not updated in real time so i wouldn't bother about that.
Wich OS are you on and wich Last.fm client?
Is your iPod library "consistent" or you could have duplicated tracks or something else wich couldn't be considered as a standard configuration?

I would suggest you to check these two paragraphs in the FAQs:
    - about delayed scrobble
    - about double scrobbles

About the pop-up box i think is quite useful since you're experiencing some anomalies and it can give you the chance to filter unwanted listenings. Anyway if you want to disable it just go in the client Tools>Options>iPod>Always Confirm iPod Scrobbles.

  • I'm on Windows XP; not sure which last.fm client it is, but I download updates whenever they pop up so I'm assuming I am up-to-date with the current program.

Just did it again as I plugged in my iPod. It synced with iTunes, I waited about a minute, then dismounted the device. About 5 minutes later a last.fm box popped up saying: "Last.fm has found 17 tracks played. Do you wish to scrobble these?" And then it listed all the tracks I played on my iPod earlier today.

I like being able to "approve" the scrobbles and everything; I'm just wondering why it takes so long for the box to pop up. It used to recognize the tracks played as soon as I plugged the device in; now it takes a while. I guess I was more curious about whether it was a problem with Last.fm or my iPod; I'm hoping it's not the latter, because it's brand new. :/

I've got similar problem here. Yesterday, I listened 57 tracks on my ipod. In the evening, when plugging the ipod into iTunes, it first scrobbled only 12 tracks.
Afterwards, I forced it again using the 'Diagnostics' option and then it found again another 12 tracks.
I forced it then a second time and there, the last 33 tracks were found.
Quite weird ... Can it be linked to the size of my itunes library which is quite large ?

I saw also that there are a huge amount of COM errors in the twiddly.log file. I can provide it if needed.

  • @themusicaddict: no worries for your new iPod, all the synching process are based on iTunes and Last.fm client, There is not really any direct involvement of your iPod as a physical device.

The Last.fm client is constantly under development so is quite normal that certain behaviours can adjust a bit between releases. Once the iPod support becomes more reliable developing will focus on refining performance and responsiveness.

@Toad_BE: we've been trying to reproduce this, have you noticed if it happens only when reaching a certain amount of tracks? i mean over 30 for instance or so...or it is happening even after listening 10 songs?

Listened again to 57 tracks today and there it got them in one shot. Verrrry strange indeed !
I will try to find a reproducable scenario if possible.

    Take care ...

  • Hi,

I'm experiencing this same thing. When I plug in my iPod (Touch) it ususally takes a couple of minutes before the last.fm client realizes it (not that I'm complaining - it's better than not working at all), but the problem is that it lists songs that I've listened to recently in iTunes as well (not only the tracks listened on the iPod).

This makes it really difficult to know if they have already been scrobbled and if leaving them marked will lead them to being "doublescrobbled".

  • I'm noticing some strange behaviour too - might be related to the above problems you guys are having....

I connected my ipod this evening after a few days and was expecting the 30-40 tracks I'd played to be scrobbled.

Over these few days I'd also played lots of other tracks on itunes and they'd already appeared on my last.fm page.

After connecting my ipod, when the confirm scrobble window popped up it listed the tracksI had recently been playing on itunes and not my ipod!

The playcounts for the tracks in this window were clearly associated with the tracks I'd been playing on my ipod (I'd played one album over and over and it was pretty obvious). It was just that the track names were wrong. It was like they'd been overwritten with the most recently played tracks in itunes.

(My itunes client DID update the playcounts on the right tracks correctly - it was just a problem with the last.fm client.)

I then disconnected the ipod, played a tune on it, reconnected and this time the last.fm client correctly identified the track to be scrobbled.

So is this something to do with last.fm not being able to handle scrobbles if, between connecting my ipod to itunes, I've been using both itunes and my ipod to play tracks?

This has only started happening recently, definitely only since updating to itunes 8.

I cancelled the scrobble at the confirm window because I didn't want duplicates! But there's no obvious way to get the correct tracks scrobbled....

Grateful for any help on this....or just someone to tell me they've had the same issue!

  • Manualy or automatically synced? thanks for reporting we'll try to reproduce this, though at the moment seem more an isolated glitch than a recurring problem that could eventually lead to a bug.

  • automatically synced. Cheers for looking into this.

  • Error 403 Invalid ticket

Every time I try to scrobble on my home computer it gives e a message error 403, invalid ticket. Yet when I use the same account at work it works just fine. How can I fix this?

  • There aren't any recent forums with an answer, but whenever I plug in my 8GB Ipod, manually synced, it says 'No Ipod library found'. I've tried reinstalling both itunes and lastfm but nothing seems to work. At all.
    Thanks.

  • Last.fm wasnt scrobbling my ipod(manually managed ipod+auto scrobbling), deleted music library in itunes(which isnt updated via manually managed) but it still wasnt scrobbling. Cleared user associations in Options/Ipod, ejected+closed itunes, plugged ipod back in and last.fm came up with "ipod detected, will automagically scrobble selections from now on" et voila, 175 scrobbles dating over the last 2 weeks.

Tried that. When I first plugged in iPod it said it'd detect it from now on, but scrobbles didn't show up. Tried restarting the computer again and still didn't work. Ahhh.

  • I just plugged it in and got "No ipod library found" Ejected, closed itunes, put in again and worked.

Did you clear the user associations AGAIN?
