Apple Ping vs. Last.fm

  • Apple Ping vs. Last.fm

I just watched the Apple keynote and Steve Jobs showed a new iTunes based service called "Ping". It's an all-in-one-Facebook-Twitter-Last.fm. It will be available with the next iTunes version.

Do you think this service will have serious effects on last.fm?

  • Seems like last.fm will never get the wide-spread attention is deserves, unfortunately. I would love to be connected with many of my real-life friends on last.fm but many of them are not geeky enough about music to join. However, they probably all use iTunes and will most likely use Ping.

Not good news for last.fm, IMO. :(

  • Was thinking the same while watch he Key note ...ah crap poor last.fm is what I said to myself

  • Me too... I hope last.fm finds some way to integrate with Ping - When it comes to social networking, why can't we ALL be friends?

I really hope that last.fm won't suffer under this. Gah, I hate Apple so much.

Have you seen the screenshots, by the way? It's a total Facebook rip-off.

Not everyone is using Apple or iTunes, so relax. Also, the API of last.fm is much more open than Apple's ever will be, so it's a lot easier to write 3rd party applications for last.fm .. I guess.

  • Just hope the last.fm scrobbler will work with iTunes...I think that ping could enhance last.fm so much.

I was expecting iTunes to have an "on-demand" player to piss all over Spotify, I guess I loose my bet at work :(

well, it is better in some things, samples for example. and the twitter / facebook integration. it's just that i don't care, and i don't need it. i have my own last.fm charts to stare at <3

i hope it doesn't severely impact last.fm, though.

  • @numblog It does not matter. If you could compare the number of active iTunes installs vs the number of active Last.fm users all the API calls in the world will not keep would-be Last.fm users from discovering and liking the new features in Ping/iTunes 10. But really we'll just have to wait and see what the experience is like.

Thing is, given the price of Apple's products and services, I reckon it'd still be more expensive than Spottify. Although, I suppose it would be justified this time, given that the iTunes music catalogue is like 5-6x the size of the Spotify one + it has videos, books, TV Shows and god knows what else.

Working to become a more pleasant Citizen 2.0 : )

The thing that still drives me nuts is that last.fm can't find my friends in other networks (gmail, fb, twitter), which is something almost every other service in the world offers on initial setup and at any time after that. I use last.fm to keep track of stats more than anything...so if Ping allows me to actually connect with more friends, I'll probably jump ship.

@newpolluter: I second that, i love last.fm, but if i can connect better with ping, well, lets say goodbye to last.fm.

But i don't think so, i think that ping will offer less than last.fm does, but let's see.

Because of this? How is this something they shouldn't be doing?

  • I doubt Ping will do everything last.fm does. It might do something similar, but not everything. And I doubt people will leave Last.fm, Facebook and Twitter, where they have a history - and go over to this place. Especially people who don't like Apple or iTunes.

Also, I joined last.fm for stats, and Ping looks like it has no stats.

I mean, how likely is it that Apple's going to introduce this thing, it's gonna suck, and even though it sucks, it kills Last.Fm? Not likely at all, I'm thinking. So what's to worry about?

Well, played with Ping for a while. Can definitely say that this is no Last.fm killer, not even close.

Also, manual approval for profile photos… really?

  • Ping might be interesting if actual people I know would use it. Last.FM is still much better, but I agree. Add Facebook friend finding and integration to Last.FM and it might get a wider audience.

I agree, after using Ping for about 30 minutes I don't think it provides the "social stuff" like last.fm.

Ping is a total facebook ripoff. Right down to the color theme. Unimpressed.

  • Ping won't catch on. The Zune Social didn't catch on, and ping will be a curiosity for a very short time, then dwindle. A social network defined solely by an interest as specific as music does not interest people. For the same reason the Zune HD is dead, and the iPod Touch still sells like crazy. People enjoy a little of everything (Music, games, communication), and if a service provides a little of everything (Facebook), people will flock to it, no matter how flawed that service might be (Facebook).

Ping is about downloading, not about streaming. So not interested in it...

  • Been poking around ping for about 1.5 hrs. You can "like" and "post" (comment on) albums that you look up in the iTunes Music Store, and write reviews. These will all show up on your profile, and people who follow you will see this on their home page and can listen to longer snippets of what you like and post compared to just looking up and previewing in the iTunes Music Store. It has nothing to do with what you play in itunes. If a song is not in the iTMS, it does not exist in Ping.

and therefore i'm not interested in using ping at all.
