    Last.fm founders to leave company

The three founders of music recommendation site Last.fm, Martin Stiksel, Felix Miller and Richard Jones, are to leave the firm later this year.

Two years after the site was bought by US media giant CBS and seven years since once of the UK's most successful web 2.0 start-ups launched, all three are to leave Last.fm to concentrate on new projects. The company is to remain at its base in east London.

whether it's the rats deserting a sinking ship (not calling you rats, btw) or simply something else these certainly aren't the best possible news.

you crafted a powerful internet tool, let's hope it stays on the good side. thou shall be missed.

can't believe what a busy boy Arrington is in the blog. has to be him. can't be anyone else. http://blog.last.fm/2009/06/10/message-from-the-lastfm-founders-felix-rj-and-martin#c011528

Founders do this. They have the vision, they build, see their baby walking and talking, then they start thinking 'what next?'. I've seen this so many times. It's not rats leaving a sinking ship, it's more like the ship can sail fine without them and they want to be needed again. Which can only mean something interesting in the future to look forward to.

Just ignore Arrington. The guy kicks on getting attention over the web no matter if it's good or bad. The moment people start ignoring him his fun will be over quickly.

We can only hope this place doesn't die without them.

    Is that a birthmark?
  • Heh, and what are the rest of us staff who are staying on? Chopped liver? There are more than enough good people here to carry the torch onwards and upwards.

It depends on who they have running it.

If CBS takes the reigns, it will flounder. At very least, I see it becoming less friendly to independent artists.

The only consolation is it will probably be a slower death than mp3.com suffered. That site got killed by a large corporation instantly, and then replaced by a zombie crap site about six months later.

If someone who goes by the username Babs_05 took over, I'd definately burn the place down.

Working to become a more pleasant Citizen 2.0 : )

People actually sign up to listen to no music and protest about a site that is based on listening to music. Godspeed, anti-corporate crusaders.

  • So, are we going to have some clueless blokes who only care about money to take their positions...assuming they are NOT CBS employees?

They better not have such people replacing those three or there WILL be hell to pay if the replacements start doing shit to make the site even less user and independent artist friendly.
