September 9 site update

The new searchbar-thing is a nice idea but it's broken(more loadingtime and a transfer to the offline-page) and more unclear than the one the site used before. The new design is ok but looks too much like other sites.

PS: Is the last design available for the ff-addon stylish somewhere?

I agree totally. You have taken away the most unique and useful feature, LastFM's old search had available.

LOOK at these two images. The top one is what we now have and the bottom smaller image will fix it and put back the most useful search feature on the music net:

    This will fix things:

yeah, scents of the old fm are coming :D

about IE6, well, why not put that yellow notification at the top when people on those browsers arrive on the page?
"This site might not works entirely on your browser, please consider upgrading your browser to its latest version"
number of people using those old browsers decreases and therefore number of the people/threads on the forums about the same issues with those browsers.

@CrybKeeper: Unfortunately we've had to remove our lyrics feature in the USA and Canada. Licensing lyrics on the internet is even more crazy (and expensive) than licensing the actual music.

I'm sorry you miss the lyrics feature - our stats show that so few users actually used it that it didn't make sense for us to keep it around.

  • Licensing fees for lyrics is quite crazy, anyway. It'd be nice to have it as an optional feature (so if I were an artist, I could put them somewhere), but the lack of them on the major artists will look ugly. Plus, seeing the tag state some artist pages are in, I'm guessing those lyrics would be full of garble and mistakes anyway.

yeah, the weekly neighbours/friends now listening mashup on the dashboard, a seperate recommendation section for the inbox, the group recomendations hub, a sensible site navigation that don't need an uninspired symmetry breaking side bar and i can finally leave "bring back the old last.fm" and enter "bring forward real meta data moderation".

well, most of the time you want to read the lyrics because it's a foreign language. can your US/CA stats reflect that?

Did I understand this correctly? It costs money to display lyrics? Licensing fees?

Lyrics are copyrighted works as well. They are licensable.

There is a Greasemonkey script that helps: see this thread.

Did I hear that right? Mondegreens - for the misheard word.

  • I understand that you can't just use other artists' lyrics in your songs, but the fact that they are charging someone just to display them is plain crazy.

what's so crazy about it? displaying lyrics to provide a service that might leave a profit is like using others' lyrics in your song which becomes a hit. ..of course sometimes it is a PlayBitter Sweet Symphony :|

Hey don't come here with your good arguments! :P

So basically, as long as the site doesn't make money, it's ok?

It cost us money every time lyrics were displayed or searched for. We were also obliged to display these lyrics with a kind of Javascript DRM which prevented them from being indexed by search engines, and also stopped users from copy-and-pasting the lyrics.

If you want to read more about how tightly music publishers control their lyrics copyrights, the recent happenings on LyricsWiki are a good place to start.

  • I was asked to repost this here...

"I really do not like the new search feature, it lists three pages of well know titles. I one of the weirdos who likes underground, new and little known artists. How on earth can find them through the search feature now? I have no desire to listen to the top 3 pages of well know commercial stuff. please at least give us the option to search 200 pages of stuff for the obscure gem again."

I like the new header, great job guys.

Only thing that bothers me is that the search box seems very cramped while the Profile, Inbox and Log Out links have plenty of room.
    Here's a quick mockup:

judging from what happend at LyricsWiki it seems that some think it's not ok.

thanks for the info, Russ. It might sound crazy and off-topic, but this reminds me of the discussion about album covers before we were allowed to upload them. Does that mean you have a deal and pay for every album cover picture you display? And even more crazy is that the reason why you resample certain formats to lower quality - perhaps in order to somehow comply with "fair use"? Is it just me drawing crazy conclusions? ...sorry i don't want to hijack the thread but a short answer to this would help to understand some riddles of your cdn. thanks :)

Your idea of new header looks much better than the present one.

haha that's exactly what it feels like! Looking at that old design does feel like coming home. *sigh* I miss it so much too. It was so lovely.

@SM07 - I think they're planning on using that space below the 'line' for site announcements etc. (not absolutely sure, but I think they'll go there)

@alienstashtin - agree, we need to be able to search all of Last.fm.

  • BUT THAT WOULD BE AN ERROR

On the community page, the "newest" group link leads to the "active" group page.

Dunno if anyone's mentioned this before.
I mean I'd read the thread.
    But.
    You know.

I've noticed that too, the page does exist though:

Yes, they look better; but the practicality of the old search is lost.

1- It was better with the dropdown menu so that we could select first if we wanted to search specifically for a track, tag, artist, or just generally. In this one, we have to do that after we go to the search results page.

2- Also, please keep showing the listener numbers next to the results. Without them, there is no way to know how popular a song/artist/album is except by clicking and navigating away.

I agree. Without listing the amount of listeners being displayed, there is no way to know how popular it is.

Something that I used to utilize the search for, was to correct minor formatting differences, (For example:PlayBlessed Are The Sick - Leading The Rats vs. Blessed Are The Sick / Leading The Rats). One of the advantages that last.fm has is to discern which of the two formats is correct by comparing the amount of listeners and going with the more populer version. This gives me more accuracy then other metadata and tracklisting entities such as Musicbrainz and Rate Your Music.

It would be great if this was brought back.

    strange problem

I'm using firefox 3.5.3 and i get this very strange effect

Mousing over the top options causes the coloured background to reappear for that option, but then goes back to the grey background when i move the pointer away again. Exactly the same effect happens with the black theme too.

I've tried disabling all my add-ons and plugins, but nothing makes any difference.

In the error console in firefox, there's a whole host of warning messages about the css along the lines of:

Warning: Unknown property '-moz-opacity'. Declaration dropped.
    Source File: http://cdn.last.fm/css/release-lastfm/140360/master.css
    Line: 1096

Does this have anything to do with it? Is there some setting i've got in firefox that nobody else has? Are other people using FF3.5.3 successfully...?

Force a refresh (hold CTRL, press F5). A page or so back, someone posted a similar screenshot, and I think it worked for him. I'm running it on FF3.5.3 with no issues.

If that doesn't work, clear your cache.

...or just go directly to the master.css file and refresh that. i don't think the -moz-opacity property is the problem here - it's just one of several proprietary ones that firefox uses.
