    June 3 Site Update

    Hi everyone,

We pushed out a Last.fm site update earlier today. There are no huge changes (unlike last time) but there are still a few noteworthy bits:

Many artists on Last.fm make some or all of their music available as a free download. We've made this more obvious on artist pages, and made a new page that lists all free MP3s for an artist. If you're an artist, you can find some nifty badges in your music manager that you can use elsewhere on the web to let people know they can get your music from Last.fm.

We've also spent some time in this release working on performance improvements. We're still working on this, but you should find Last.fm feels a little bit faster than before.

If you're in the US you'll have seen our summer festivals page. You can use our 'festival filter' feature (try saying that 3 times quickly) to get your personalised lineup for a festival. Before, you had to print it out or write it down if you wanted to take it with you, but now you can get it emailed to you instead!

As well as the above we've got the usual array of backend improvements and miscellaneous bugfixes, including the much-requested restoration of album info on our snazzy new listen page.

See you in two weeks for another exciting installment of SITE UPDATE,

    - Matt

Extra special thanks this week to acreature for preparing this post and to psychoalgie, who managed to spot the update mere minutes after it went live. ;)

the "freetracks" page only shows me 4 downloadable songs, while Pogo's tracks page shows at least 23...

or is that just me? :P

"If you're an artist, you can find some nifty badges in your music manager that you can use elsewhere on the web to let people know they can get your music from Last.fm."
    I can't seem to find these images/badges..

this also seems to be bugged (from the front page of the music manager):
    "Your Community Statistics
    Posts containing Artist Links:

    Most common Tags:
    "

is it supposed to be empty?

    Thanks for the update.

The threads seem wider, but all the text seems to use the same width as before. And our sigs are still truncated (compared to the old site). Will that get widened?

How do you get to the +free tracks page from an artist page?

Also, when will start noticing the site's faster? I've got my fingers crossed for shouts and sending PMs... : )

    Album info is back, great...but:

I don't like it that we always have to scroll down to find some vital infos on the new radio page.

A smaller player and rearranging some of the info boxes to get the most important infos up would be cool!

I still get a timed out white page when trying to view the Sent folder in my Inbox. Don't know if that's related to the new update?

    yes, that's what I said :D
the 'normal' tracks page has at least 23 tracks with "free download"
'freetracks' has only 4 of them ;)

A cheeky little suggestion, would it not be possible to include a player on the free mp3 page since I assume these require no royalty payments? correct me if I'm wrong. Plus since its a separate page that only appears for artists with free downloads there no confusion for new users like with artist pages.

+1 and I saw a player still on a labels page, so I don't see why there couldn't be one on free tracks pages.

Its definitely missing a lot of the free downloads. Theres no free tracks page link for for My Brightest Diamond when she has at least a couple.

    Edit: same issue here

Did you notice the gear button in the "Your Recent Tracks" section on the radio page?

  • Thanks for the update.

Please please please bring back the music player on artists pages. I found that to be an essential part of last.fm for me, and the sites usefulness has taken a massive dive for me, and for others who have also voiced their distress at this.

Honestly it makes sense amalgamating all playable tracks onto one page. I don't care about videos, I want the music dude!

From the FAQs in the Music manager:

If you composed the music and lyrics, you will be given the option to make your tracks available to Last.fm users as free downloads. Last.fm will not pay any royalties when a track is downloaded for free but will continue to pay you royalties for free and subscription radio and on-demand even if you chose to make your tracks available for free downloads.

ah damn probably not possible then...

  • i've noticed some tracks don't have the "full track" indicator anymore even though they play in full length on the track page (e.g. Music Is The Key).

and another silly question: What is this ? A political statement?

I would say thats a bigger more difficult issue then the minor things in this update and thus will have a "done when its done" timescale and couldn't be just rushed out in a couple of weeks...if they where starting from today anyway ;). Look how long auto correction took.
