yeah that would be nice! pandora isn't letting you have access to the data much yet.

No, it's a streaming site and AS does not currently accept streams for a variety of reasons discussed previously.

that, and pandora seems to be more geared towards "discovering" new artists, and yea, it IS very good at it, I have to admit. I typed in Mest, and yea, after an hour or so of listening and ranking the songs, I got a whole list of CDs that Amazon.com needs to send me now.....haha.

Where as, Last.FM is geared towards music in general, known and unknown artists; but geared more towards the casual listener who listens to music they are already familiar with (my own opinion, from what I've seen anyways :P).

P.S. Props to Zampa for using the Search feature too! Lol. Just noticed how old of a post this is :)

Right, because streams do not allow you to choose what music you would like to hear.

Pandora is different. It allows you control over the stream - just like last.fm does.

That's why I would love to have the Pandora support, too.

Well we support LaunchCast, so there's no reason why we couldn't support Pandora too.

Having said that, writing a plugin for Pandora would be a royal pain in the arse - you'd either need to sniff the stream or do some amusing OCR on the window.

  • Bah, now you guys went and got me all mesmerised by Pandora. Sure, I'd like a plugin for it too now. :P

  • I... third(?) that!

    Well,

maybe talking to the guys over there would allow for a more simple solution? I recall Vic Wong from their user support to be very friendly and responsive. You can reach him at first name @pandora.com

I just wrote Tim Westergren, the one of the founders of Pandora with the request to implement last.fm support for their subscribers. If you want to make your voice heard on this matter, too - please write to pandora-support@pandora.com

I'm posting the letter here, so you can copy off it, if you want.

    >>>>>
    Hi Tim,

I just wanted to let you know that there is just one thing at the moment that keeps me away from subscribing to Pandora.

And that is the lacking support for last.fm charts. See, I love to track my listening habits with last.fm and take a look at, what my friends are listening to. I already found quite a few friends with a similar music taste using the system.

The problem is: everyting I listen to on Pandora is "lost" for my last.fm profile.

Of course last.fm and Pandora are competitors in the profile radio segment - so I understand that you might not be too enthusiastic to support the audioscrobbler/last.fm system.

So why not make the ability to write the songs to your last.fm profile a pandora subscriber feature? Then you would get subscription revenue from the users that want to track their listening habits with last.fm - and not lose any business to them.

    The demand is there: http://www.last.fm/forum/21717/_/49441/1#f793881

It would be great, if you could consider implementing the required audioscrobbler protocol (www.audioscrobbler.com)

I use pandora at work becuase it plays more of the music that i like to listen by different artists where as last.fm dont do that much and play something different..It will be nice to support this

  • I actually keep a ~1min silent .ogg file on hand for when I come across something on Pandora that grabs me & that I feel should be represented on last.fm, and edit the tags as I go. A slightly dodgy practice, but some little-known artists I've found there have small/diverse fanbases which spice up my recommendations gladly. This is the only solution I've found so far for accurately submitting each song from a mix CD burnt as one long track, too.

Quite frankly, I would never go to such lengths to really accurately report my listening :-)

  • When you're adding to an artist's listener count of less than twenty or so, it all seems a bit more worthwhile :)

    haha, good idea. :P

  • Hi, this is Vic from Pandora.

Great to see some discussion going on about Pandora here on the last.fm forum. I honestly didn't expect to see so much support from this community, particularly since lots of bloggers seem interested in pitting us against each other. As such, I feared that most last.fm users would be vehemently against Pandora. Its very refreshing to see the opposite is going on here.

Sure, our approaches to music analysis are different, but there are no hard feelings. I personally think last.fm is great.

As Russ mentioned, developing a plugin for Pandora presents a unique challenge, since it is a flash-based application and we do not currently have any open API's for querying our playlist engines.

However, changes in Pandora in the recent months might make it easier to develop plugins. For example, there is a world viewable favorites page (with a static URL) for each user. Perhaps this page could be queried and fed into last.fm profiles. Also, track titles are dynamically refreshed into the browser title bar of Pandora.com, so perhaps that could be of use (certianly an easier solution than OCR or packet sniffing!)

If any members of the last.fm staff would like to get in contact with us to discuss the options, I'd be happy to put you all in contact with the business development team here. Just shoot me an email at vic@pandora.com

    Best!

Bloggers are a little special. I think most of the average users would love it. I use both last.fm and Pandora, I really couldn't see replacing one with the other. Pandora is much more useful for finding artists that are very very much like another that you love while last.fm is better for more out of the blue music.

I agree, both systems serve different purposes.

Cool, i emailed Vic about this :)

  • any updates to speak of?

  • I've only recently discovered both Pandora and last.fm and I think this would be a great project. I too, find both very useful and as a Squeezebox owner, look forward to using both with the Squeezebox (if I can ever figure out how to use the last.fm plug-in with the SB :().

  • I can't use it anyway...

even if Pandora is open to try for everyone in the world, after the trial period is over, you only can subscribe if you're an US citizen... which I'm not. I'm in Austria, and I'm practically closed out of Pandora now that my trial is over. I'm happy it doesn't work this way with Last.FM.
