Idea For Last.fm Client - Send the streaming radio to play through iTunes

For a while i used Audioscrobbler and one feature of it that i loved was that i played the Last.fm radio's through iTunes.

In the end however I opt for the Last.fm software client because I enjoy the UI a lot better.

I think it would be great though if in the Last.fm client's preferences we were given the option to, like in the AudioScrobbler software, listen to the virtual radio's via iTunes.

Thoughts, Comments, This already possible and I'm oblivious?

  • You can already do this. What you need to do is:
    • In the Last.fm software Click Tools > Options > Radio
    • In "Stream in external player" change the value to of the "Connect to localhost on port:" field to the port you want to use (e.g. 81)
    • Exit the Last.fm software and restart it
    • In iTunes click on Advanced > Open Stream
    • Enter the stream url as http://localhost:port where port is the port number you chose (e.g. http://localhost:81 )
    • Play the station in the Last.fm software

The radio will now play in iTunes. If you click the stop button in iTunes, playback returns to the Last.fm software.

    Works only for one song

This only works for the first song for me. afterwards iTunes stops the playback and it doesn´t even return to the lastfm client.

  • works flawless!

Yeah, just replace "In iTunes click on Advanced > Open Stream" with "In Winamp click on File > Play URL" (or something like that, I have it in Swedish).

The most pointless war in history needs to be stopped. So join and stuff.
  • Really can't get this to work.

Sorry to be so stupid, but I can't get this work at all. It seems very simple to do and it would appear I follow it. However, music never actually streams across into iTunes. So I'm just not making this work.

I really want to listen to Last.FM through my Hi/Fi like I use iTunes. Please, Please can someone help me.

  • No Tools > Options > Radio

    just like gadgetchannel, EXCEPT!

In the Last.fm StatusBar, Click Preferences > Radio

In "Stream in external player" change the value to of the "Connect to localhost on port:" field to the port you want to use (e.g. 81)

    Restart Last.fm

In iTunes click on Advanced > Open Stream
Enter the stream url as http://localhost:port where port is the port number you chose (e.g. http://localhost:81 )

Play the station in the Last.fm software

The radio will now play in iTunes. If you click the stop button in iTunes, playback returns to the Last.fm software.

after you change the localhost to your port,( e.g. 8000 or any other number, you have to hit "APPLY" and then "OK"

    then restart last.fm

open iTunes. make sure REPEAT is on repeat same song
open iTunes>Advanced>openaudiostream and type (or paste):
    http://localhost:8000/LAST.FM.8000
    hit "OK"

most any port number will work as long as use the same one for last.fm and itunes.

it will now work with airport express and visualizer

thanks! finally got it to work. :)

the "repeat same song" bit and the "last.fm.8000" part of the localhost address probably did the trick. those were new to me.

edit: something odd that i noticed - the tracks seem to be trying to crossfade into each other, ie before one song ends, the next is already beginning (as seen thru the growl notification). so naturally, the first second or two of the next track is cut off.

i've already disabled crossfade in itunes, but it seems to still happen. :/

okay, it looks like http://localhost:8000 or 8001 are the only ports that will work for me. (in any case, they're both recognized ports for radio streams (wikisource).

but what's with the track overlap? before one track has ended (with several seconds to go), the next track is already off the block, and so the first few seconds are cut off.

iscrobbler for me seems to exhibit a similar if lesser glitch: the first bit of each track stutters momentarily.

    anyone?

This only works for the first song for me. afterwards iTunes stops the playback and it doesn´t even return to the lastfm client.

This is the same for me. Is it possible to "fix" stream "breaking" by Last.fm when the song finished and don't use single track repeat? Maybe this could be a suggestion for development team?

    Another 2 ideas/suggestions:
    - Implement Last.fm client to send current streamed song metadata to external player, like many shoutcast radios do, plzz! :)
    - Add special player url combinations do remotely control Last.fm from player, for example: http://localhost:8888/tags/trance to play "Radio Trance", http://localhost:8888/users/login to play friend's Radio..., this could force Last.fm client auto-start playback "remotely" after clicking play button in favorite player (it will connect to 8888 port and apply command to Last.fm client).

scrobbler yes; stream from lastfm.de application no

    hi,
using the program lastfm installed on my mac, it works fine via itunes/express/stereo
Changing onto the lastfm website and playing music there after having logged in, it does not.
Is this possible? To stream, ie. the playlists of other users ?
    thanks for your help

    how is this sooo difficult

what i want is to be able to do is open up itunes click on the radio stream which is my last fm recommendations and listen were it just an average radio stream. the method above i can only seem to get it playing through itunes if i start it through last fm iscrobbler first, any suggestions?

  • this doesnt work.

    Tried every recommendation here.
    Nada.

WOrkin on a mac. Granted, I'm at work, so maybe it has something to do with different ports being blocked. But I know 80 isnt and it still doesnt work on that.

  • To add insult to injury

no matter what port i put in the field, the music always plays through last fm and nothing else. No matter what. Argh!
