a big thank you for last.fm

I just want you to know that i really appreciate the work you guys have done over the years, since RJ left university. Audioscrobbler/Last.fm has intitaed some major changes over the years, and it gets better every time.

Out of all the permuations, last.fm has never had anything close to real-time charts, given the amount of raw data the servers must have to deal with, this is a real feat. The other changes, such as embracing web 2.0, although controversial will facilitate the greater the interaction within the last.fm community, providing another avenue in the music discovery process, which is ultimatly the fundamental aim of this project..

Other things such as books, movies etc can only dream the same quality of user experience that last.fm offers, go have a look!

Users of any web service will always be critial to any changes, its a symptom of taking things for granted. Every major succesful web project has a set of vocal disgrunted users, who always complain, being their loudest during changes. For every complaint you receive, there are a 100 users who are happy with the service. Look at the ratio between daily hits / complaints...you will be okay unless this figure falls below 10.

People indentify themselves with the brand and the experience they have with it. You change the brand or user experience for a user, you are actually affecting their personality. Some personalities are averse to change, because it brings uncertainty, a fear of the unknwon. These people are known as social conservatives, and they do exist, unfortantly.

Although I agree with you on almost everything you wrote, I have to ask you something. Does this picture look empty to you or not?

I know that there is a LOT of people who complain about new design just because they like to complain or, as you said, "changing the brand affect their personality". But that doesn't mean that some of complaints are not justified.
Some people love last.fm and maybe that is the reason they complain. They just expected new last.fm would be better than this...

my profile looks empty because i am a subscriber, hence there are no colorful ads on my profile :D

  • I´m not a subscriber and there is A LOT of empy space on my profile. and "Kids are taught not to whine"??? maybe I'm getting it wrong, but many people have expressed valid concerns and suggestions and that doesn't make them whiners.

I also love many of the things that lastfm has done, but I would like a bit more reaction from the staff about the polite and useful advice that has been given here by a lot of users. We need to know that at least we are being heard and that no more stuff is just gonna show up out of nowhere.

I'm not a subscriber and I don't have "colorful" ads on my profile. Greasemonkey and Stylish do wonders :)
Plus, we agree that profile page looks empty :)

You're both quite right about voicing opions. That being said can we not hijack it into a complaint about whitespace? Like bubblegirl said it's a valid concern but if you notice in the OP it's not the topic of this thread.

    Thanks

    That statement is interesting.
